Newfoundland Pictures / Cuddly Drake
« on: November 17, 2005, 01:41:59 am »
For a big dog, Drake can be very cuddly when he wants to be.  He cuddles with our cat, he cuddles with his toys and now that he's extra clean, he cuddles on the couch.  He's a big Cuddle Bug!  But if you molest him too much, he moves on.  Too many kisses and squishes are a no-no and you lose cuddle priviledges.  Anybody else have cuddly dogs?

Newfoundland Pictures / Before & After
« on: November 17, 2005, 01:15:11 am »
Thought I'd share Drakes big haircut.  He was getting so shaggy and would get stinky, or "tinky" as we call it, very quickly.  So we took him to get his 4 month cut.  It's not as short as his summer cut, pretty close though.  We're taking up to Tahoe for Christmas and we don't want him to get too cold in the snow.  Everybody seems to really like it short, we do too because it lasts quite a while.  The best part about this, I HAVE ENOUGH FUR NOW FOR A NEWF HAT!  I'm sending it off ASAP.  Yeah, I know, what a weirdo...  ::)

I just read this story and it made me really happy.  This dog would have been doomed in the past.  What great leaps we have made in Veterinary Science!

Games & Jokes / Who's got the Biggest Paws of Them All?
« on: November 08, 2005, 10:04:59 pm »
You know what they say about big feet......   8)  I thought it would be fun to see the Big Paws on the dogs of BPO and maybe have a little photo contest to see who's got the biggest paws of all.  Drake gets a lot of comments about his, they look like those Bear Claw slippers.  I measured his and not counting the hair, he's about 4 inches across.  I must warn you folks, THEY DON'T PARTICULARLY LIKE THIS.  Well, at least Drake doesn't, he kept moving around every time I put the tape measure to his feet.  So, 4 inches is the size to beat.  Even if your dog isn't bigger than that, post a photo!   ;D

Games & Jokes / ADDICTIVE GAME 2
« on: November 03, 2005, 07:03:21 pm »
Yeah, it's Friday and I'm bored at work, so that's why I'm looking up time killing online games.  If you liked the last game, this one is even better, more addictive and much harder.  It's pretty funny as well.  Play the Home Run game which will lead to Hang Over. Enjoy!

Games & Jokes / ADDICTIVE GAME
« on: November 03, 2005, 06:54:44 pm »
OK, this is for all you folks with time to kill.  This game is frustrating because it gets rediculously fast.  It's premise is pretty funny because it's something we'd all like to do and the soundbites are hilarious.  I have never been able to get past level 9 - 650 points.  GOOD LUCK!!!  ;D

Newfoundland Pictures / Fireman Drake

Sarah got Drake a Halloween outfit so he could wear it for the Trick-or-Treaters.  He doesn't like it very much.  What do you think?

I just received an email about this legislation and thought I would share this with you all.  Seems like a worthwhile thing to do.  All I know is that if a natural disaster happens here and we have to be evacuated, Drake and our kitties are coming with us.  There is no way I would leave them behind, I would probably go insane.  Check out this link and decide for yourself, I think this is a good idea "just in case" something happens here.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Why confine your dog to a Crate?
« on: October 20, 2005, 11:43:38 pm »
I have read several posts about people having issues with their dogs being in crates all day, snapping, barking, etc. etc. and I'm curious about the logic behind it all.  I can't imagine crating being something thats enjoyable for a dog.  We crated Drake when he was a puppy and it just seemed so mean.  Once he was housebroken, we stopped that practice.  I really haven't done a lot of research on this topic, but what is the logic behind crate training?  I can see if you live in an apartment or small house with no yard and you don't want your dog destroying your furniture and making a mess or if you show dogs and you want them to be presentable, but are those the only reasons?  I would feel horrible doing that to Drake, although he spends most of the day sleeping in the garage, it is nice to know he can get up and stretch his legs and drink water if he needs to.  We had friends who crated their Weimriener and when they visited us, they always had to leave early because they had to let her out of her cage.  It totally controlled their social life and activities.  They had a big back yard and plenty of space, but they still crated her.  She barked all of the time when she was in the cage and it just seemed to be mean.  She would go crazy every time they let her out.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE UNDERSTAND, I'm not trying to be judgemental or condescending, that really isn't my intent.  I just don't understand why some folks do this, so that's why I'm questioning the practice.  It just seems most animals hate being in cages for extended periods of time.  Can you guys enlighten me on why you do this rather than letting your dog have free roam?  I am open to all points of views, so fill me in!  ???

Anything Non-Dog Related / Impossible to get out of bed...
« on: October 19, 2005, 11:56:11 pm »
Every morning, I have to force myself out of bed at gunpoint.  First off, my job sucks so that doesn't help with getting out of bed at 5:45 AM.  But the fact that we have an ultra comfortable, pillow top California King with Memory Foam on it doesn't help either.  This time of year too, it is so extra warm and cozy in the morning.   ::)   If we still kept our cats inside, I would never get out of bed.  They'd always lay around me, like fuzzy, purring paper weights, trapping me inside the soft, toasty sheets.  Then when I finally drag myself out of that warm, cozy, slice of heaven, I trip over my fuzzy black Newf who is snoring and looking way too cute.  So, I lay down with him on his dog bed and fall asleep again with my head on his fuzzy belly.  Before I know it, I have like 10 minutes to get dressed, shaved and get some coffee and food together before I jump into my car and speed towards the he** I call my job.   It doesn't help that my wife makes her own hours and rarely has to get up before me, so she does the half asleep babbling goodbye stuff to me, all snuggled up in the sheets.  Arrrrgh!   Does anybody else have this problem?  >:(

Newfoundland Pictures / Blessed Newfs
« on: October 13, 2005, 10:32:40 am »
I don't know if anybody else did this, but last Sunday here in Novato, St. Anthony's Catholic Church did their annual "Blessing of the Animals".  We were out of town but Mia was nice enough to take Drake and Yogi to be blessed.  It is an old tradition that was started by St. Francis of Assisi, hundreds of years ago and many churches did it last weekend.

We heard there were lots of dogs and cats there, and even a few birds and rabbits.  Even though we aren't very religious, it was a nice thing to do and we really appreciated Mia taking the dogs.  She and her Mom even made flower necklaces for the dogs to wear and I think Drake ate his.  Here's a pic.

Newfoundland Pictures / The Newf Whisperer

I finally got around to video taping Drake doing his famous whisper.  Although it's not his best performance, it's a good example.  He didn't even drool too much!  Enjoy!

Newfoundland Pictures / Newfs at Tomales Bay
« on: October 04, 2005, 02:12:46 pm »
We had an incredible weekend and gave the Newfs a fun treat.  We drove up to Tomales Bay with Mia and my Mom and it was a typical foggy, October coastal day in Northern California.  After buying 2 dozen Sweetwater Oysters at Hog Island and sucking a few of them down:

we took Drake and Yogi to the nearest beach to play.  They had a blast and we got a lot of laughs.  Drake was such a turkey because we would throw the kong out into the water and Yogi would swim out to get it, and then Drake would wait until Yogi was halfway back and he would take it from him.  Yogi did all the work and Drake would get all the glory.  Yogi tried to scare Drake with his meanest growls but he is just too nice and just let Drake have the kong.  We went home and had an oyster feast with lots of wine.  Perfect Day!

Newfoundland Discussions / Drake almost killed me....
« on: October 03, 2005, 11:01:23 pm »
There is nothing more dangerous than a big, black dog that likes to sleep on the floor of a pitch black hallway.  I got up to go to work this morning, went out of our bedroom into the hallway and before I knew it, I was on the floor.  Drake prefers to sleep on our hardwood floor, opposed to his nice soft dog bed in our bedroom.  He starts out on his dog bed when we go to bed, but usually he gets up and goes to lay in the hallway.  He decided to lay right next to the door last night and with the shorter days we are getting now, it's still dark when I get up.  So as I'm tripping over him this morning, he doesn't even move and barely lifts his head as I crash to the floor.  This isn't the first time he's done that, I think he's trying to kill me so it will just be him and Sarah.  Maybe I should change his name to Oedipus.....

Has anybody else almost been inadvertently killed by their dog?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Hilarious Book
« on: September 30, 2005, 01:25:23 am »
That message of Good Hope that Michael posted had an image from a book I had totally forgotten about.  I gotta get a copy of it.  I think there have been several books on this subject.  Does anybody else have some funny books, animal related or not, to share?  I'm really hating all the garbage on television these days and reading much more now, so I'd love to hear some of your favs.
