Rottweiler Discussions / Re: take your Puppy to work days?
« on: April 28, 2005, 09:16:18 am »
The guy who I replaced when I took over this job, brought his female Pit Bull to work everyday.  She was really sweet but had serious seperation anxiety and would yip and yap every time he would leave her in his office.  I asked if I could bring Drake and they said NO!  I guess they let the first guy bring his dog because he had been here for so long and had always brought her.  So it was fine for a yappy Pit Bull to be in the office, but not a quiet, mellow Newf?  OOOkay........ ......

I'll send you some today.  We took Drake to a carting seminar in Antioch and he had a blast.  It is kinda funny, people looked at us and our dogs and laughed.  I have heard of people freaking out and saying it's animal cruelty, but they obviously don't know a thing about working dogs.  It's what they were bred for you idiots!  I can't wait to get a cart for Drake.

One other thing about this topic is that, yes it is true that a dog's temperment is a direct result of how it's owners raise and treat it, but people need to keep in mind the basis for what they were originally bred for.  Guard dogs are, by nature, going to have a predisposition to being more aggressive.  That is what they were bred for, to be a menacing threat to anyone who would want to harm their master.  Other breeds, like Working dogs, are not going to have this inherent quality of aggression, but that doesn't mean that they lack the ability to be so.  After WWII, German Shepards became a very popular breed.  Many people found out the hard way that they tend to BITE!  This may be for a variety of reasons, but a fact is a fact.  I love German Shepards, but I don't think I would ever get one because I have seen them bite a lot of people.  There is a reason why they have been used by the military and police forces for a long, long time.  These are the things that people need to realize when they buy dogs, each breed has it's pros and cons and potential risks.

CONGRATULATION S!!!  Welcome to the wonderful world of Newfie ownership.  Is this your first?  William is a cutie, enjoy him while he is small.  Soon he will be grow into his awkward stage where he looks like a gorilla and then he gets HUGE!  Every time you walk him it will be like you have a celebrity on a leash.  Also, there is going to be a series of questions and comments that people will say over and over and over and over.......  Comes with the breed.  Have fun!

How about Agnes, or Bessie?  If she is a big oafy dog, those names seem to come to mind for me, kinda like a cow I guess.  Although, the Brindle coloring gives her sort of an exotic look.  Maybe you could research foreign names for females.  Lilu, Bwana, Helga, Sasha, Inga, Tess, etc.etc.etc.  Good luck, I think it's a good idea to pick a monosyllabic name.  I think people sound kinda silly when they are calling their dog and it's got a long name.  "Penelope!  Come here!"

Beautiful Rottie, I love those dogs.  The problem is that so many "tough guys" feel they have to buy a Pit Bull or a Rottweiler and have aligned these breeds with Gang culture.  So many of these idiots have no ability to take care of these dogs.  All they want is something cool on the end of a leash when they're in public and the rest of the time the dog is locked up in the back yard.  These same idiots have overbred these breeds and now there are so many retarded messed up dogs.  Match that up with abuse and neglect and you've got a timebomb waiting to explode.  I've witnessed several times these breeds running around and mauling other dogs and attacking people.  I have had to literally kick a Pit Bull off an elderly lady and gotten bitten in the process.  I have also come across dog fights in the street where one Rottie was laying dead in the street in a pool of blood.  Stupid people who have no regard for life are responsible for for the stereotype of Rotties and Pits.  It is too bad because I have been around both breeds many times and they were for the most part, sweet and loving dogs.  It must be very frustrating being an owner of them and dealing with that stereotype.

Bills & Other Legislative Acts / Re: People United Against Puppy Mills
« on: April 22, 2005, 09:14:09 am »
GOOD FOR YOU!!!  We need to be the voice for animals and say that this kind of animal abuse can no longer go on.  I cry my eyes out every time I hear about this kind of stuff.  Puppy Mills are just disgusting.  These people are breeding dogs purely for the profit.  They mate mothers and sons or fathers and daughters just to make more and more puppies.  The way I see it, if we don't tolerate that for humans, we can't with animals as well.  Breeders should only breed their dogs to improve the genetic lines of that specific breed.  Keep up the good work, I hope it makes a difference.

Jen, I don't know the setup of your garden but the best thing to do is limit your dogs access to it, if you can.  We walk Drake every morning and evening and try to get him to do all of his "business" then.  We discourage him from relieving himself in the garden.  He still leaves the the occasional pile here and there, but that's how it goes.  The most damage he does is when he is playing with another dog or chasing raccoons and he flies through the bushes.  He can get really destructive.  If you go to:

http://bigpawsonly.com/index.php/topic,359.0.html

You will see that we can have a beautiful garden and a Newfoundland at the same time.  You just need to be vigilant, that's all I can say.  Work with your dog, they will eventually learn.

Thanks Connelly and Jaime, we love our garden.  The people who we bought our house from were very motivated and spent nine years building up this garden.  Theres apple, asian pear, peach and cherry trees, blueberry shrubs, seedless flame grapes, 25 different kinds of Japanese maples, a creek with a bridge, many different shrubs and trees and tons of flowers that just suddenly appear all year round.  We feel really lucky to have it.  Our cats are in heaven and rarely leave the yard.  The only problem is when Drake gets excited or chases Raccoons (he absolutely hates them), because he gets a bit destructive.  We are going to try to get the garden into Sunset magazine, we'll see, they're pretty picky.  I have lots of shots of Drake hanging around it so I'll send them soon if you want.  Connelly, you doggies are beauties!  We almost got a St. Bernard but opted to get a Newf.  Maybe our next dog...

Our backyard is exploding with the onset of Spring.  This makes for great photo ops of Drake.  Here he is waiting for me to finish so he can go play.

You are right, they just seem to know things.  I take Drake to visit people at an Alzheimers home near me.  It makes me and him feel good to spread a little joy in people's lives who are really lost and scared and don't have a lot of people visiting them.  Sometimes I don't have a lot of time or I'm not thinking and when we pass the Alzheimers home, Drake stops or starts to walk to the door.  He looks at me like, "you know we need to stop in, even for just a little while". I usually end up going in with him and that is that.  My wife has tried to bring him to work with her to visit Cancer patients.  They are the perfect dog to hug and cry on.  But, the hospital administrators have put a stop to that and say that he has to go through some extensive therapy training program.  He already knows what to do!!!  Regardless, Newfs are perfect for such things.  More Newf owners should take the time to bring a little light into the lives of people with special needs with their Newf.  Who doesn't smile when they see a Newf?

My Stepdad passed away the other night at home and we came to see him before he was taken away.  Our Newf Drake was there and he just knew something was up.  It is so amazing how sensitive these dogs are, they just know how people are feeling and what's going on, even without obvious signs.  He just sat by the door as if he were guarding my dad, and even barked at the funeral home people when they came as if to say, be careful with this one guys.  He knows when I'm sick, he hides when we argue and he's suddenly extra gentle around little kids and the elderly.  My wife and I are constantly looking at each other and saying, "our dog is too f**king smart!"  My wife and I grew up with several different dogs and none compared in intuitiveness like our Newfie.  It is scary sometimes, it's like he's human.  I know a lot of dogs are like this, but does anybody else feel this way about their Newf?

Congratulation s on your new Newfie Sasha.  Is she a rescue?  Just wondering since she is not a little puppy.  She reminds me a lot of my Newf Drake, very similar looks, maybe they are related.
