Old English Mastiff Pictures / Re: I have a "Paper Shredder"

hehe, isn't that a fun thing to have?
Our son had to use the "my dog ate my homework" line and brought what was left of it to school as proof!
We've learned that anything that is important stays out of Moose's reach.
Now I used to know a little dog who waited for the mailman (they had the mail slot in their door) and shredded all the mail if she was the first one there!!  How's that for fun, lol

my best friend's Silky terrier just had a litter and I had to laugh as this is one breed who thinks that they are bigger than my newf!!

The pups are cute as can be, she is actively looking for homes for them, so if you are looking for a shadow for your big paw, then send me a PM and I'll forward the info. These pups will be around 10 lbs when fully grown, their ego will weigh about 180 Lbs though!!!!!
They are in CT.

ahhh, the 'where to put the scent' has been answered already :) .It really works too!!
The kitten can find the litterbox just fine, I let her venture out of the room that the litterbox is in on her own so that she'd get a map in her head of where it is. When she has to go she'll make her way back to the litterbox. The only difference I noticed is when something scares her, she'll lie flat on the ground. She doesn't run away.It may be the same way with a dog. So it would be important that he's not around aggressive dogs who can hurt him.
I would put a harness on him, give him that security, and just help him explore his new digs, outside etc etc. His sense of smell will help him 'see' and figure things out before too long. I would not let him alone in the yard unless the yard is fenced and absolutely safe. Then I'd still be with him till he has the yard figured out and what's where so he knows how to come back inside again.

I am fostering a blind kitten right now and while it's not the same ( plus she can hear!), I find that touch goes a long way!  I would be inclined to put him on a leash and touch him a lot, have him explore the house beside you on his leash, put a bit of scent on all the furniture so he can recognize that smell with 'something is in the way' and make sure that everything remains in it's place.
It's amazing how these animals are able to adapt, as long as you have patience and love and treats :)

I simply had to share one of my favorite pictures. We've fostered litters of kittens and my one dog ( shepherd/husky cross) is such a mommy! She HAS to be taking care of them, HAS to keep them in her sight and loves nothing better than to lie in the room with the kittens playing around her .

are you able to hire a dog walker? or are you having problems with feeding and grooming as well?

The only other thing I would suggest is to contact German Shepherd rescue. Maybe they can help you find a good home for your baby. So sorry you have to go through this , Dell seems like a sweet boy.

wow thanks all for the great advice and options, I've been sharing them with hubby and it certainly will help with our decision whether we're getting this pup or not.
It's a Silkie Terrier ( as I said, a pup who thinks it's huge, lol), from a friend of mine, not a breeder. This is an oops litter, momma will be spayed after so that this doesn't happen again, but in the meantime it's very tempting for us to add one of her pups to our family. Mom is a cutie and so is dad.
We've always had big dogs, aren't used to little guys and aren't sure how our babies will take to a miniature dog. As I said, we'll be thinking long and hard as we still have enough time before we have to decide.

I am thinking of adding a pup to my family and since it hasn't been born yet I have plenty of time to figure this out. One of the obstacles is that little puppers will be born in Connecticut and I am in British Columbia, not far from Vancouver.
Is there any transport possibility between there and here? We're talking a little wanna be big paws here, one of those who think they're big, lol.

I am not sure if there are planes that have heated cargo though it would be small enough to fit inside with someone.

As I said, I'm only putting out feelers at this time. Anyone have any thoughts or likes to travel?

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Re: Why not adopt out of area
« on: October 13, 2006, 12:19:04 pm »
some rescues here in British Columbia do long distance adoptions. What impresses me is that they still have the same check list and that other rescues who live closer to the potential home will go in on behalf of the rescue and do a home check.
This is one way of being able to adopt to out of towners/out of Staters or out of Country folks. As long as you have a system set up and a trustworthy network , adopting to long distance homes should be no different than arranging a transport.

I would encourage it as it opens up more chances for an animal to find that forever home.
One never knows if an animal will be returned down the line, but I do think one can tell if an adopter will treat this animal as a family member and therefore make life work just as they would for their human kids.

I emailed my best friend in Ontario to see if she knows of someone.
I wish we could pull him and find a foster home for this dog.  Will need to get neutered asap though but right now that sounds like the least of his problems.
