Sadie was originally bought by a young lass who very shortly afterwards discovered she was pregnant.  After the baby was born she suffered from Post Natal Depression and eventually burned down her house and was committed to the mental health care system.

Her elderly mum (70s) took Sadie and the baby, but a young Akita Alpha bitch is too much for an elderly lady, and so she asked her landlady (who had three Rotties) if she would take the dog.

Frenchie took the dog, but made it clear that she would be rehoming it elsewhere because Rotties and Akitas are not really designed to be best friends.  ::)

Frenchie called me as she knew I had previously had a Sibe and asked it Sadie could come to live here.

By the time this beautiful two year old mutt came to us we were her fourth home in four months.  She spent the first two months sitting in a corner, hardly moving unless we took her out for walkies or it was meal time.  After three months, she decided to test us by ripping up the settee and a few shoes, but once she realised that she wasn't going to be kicked out again, the destructive behaviour stopped (about 3 weeks in total).

Now, she is the sweetest thing in the world.  She is very curious about everything and tends to scare the wits out of people by suddenly appearing beside them in the park to see what they are doing.  Her other trick is to jump up and put her head and paws through the open windows of cars parked by the side of the road.  I am quite surprised that no-one has had a heart attack yet.  She is brilliant with people, particularly children, although like most Akitas, she is not always good with other dogs.

Sadie is three and a half.  She is a rescued Akita who came to live with my daughter and I in April 2004 and it took her about six months to settle in, but she's fine now.

She is a Pets as Therapy dog because she is incredibly people tolerant, but she still has the Akita unpredictabili ty where other dogs are concerned (unless they are puppies, when I can predict with great accuracy that she will turn into the slushiest, most gentle dog on the planet).

Sadie is beautiful.

Thank you.  Kuma looks lovely as well.

I must admit I love having a dog that looks so stunning.  It is hilarious to see people walk past you, practically drooling!

My Akita is also a rescued dog.  It is scary how many people take on these beautiful and supremely intelligent dogs without any idea of how to care for them.

Sadie is excellent with people and is about to become a Pets as Therapy dog.  However, other dogs may be a problem and there is no logic in what causes Sadie to take offence.  The other day, a very nice couple with a very nice black labrador asked if they could say hello, and I said yes, although I warned them that Akitas can be unpredictable.  Sadie snapped at the poor Lab's nose.  Ten minutes later she turned completely to slush when we encountered an Akita puppy.  The following day she was introduced for the first time to my best friend's two terriers with no problems, and the following morning she was quite friendly with a golden labrador.

The owners of the black labrador saw all of these encounters and can't understand what their baby did to offend, and I don't know either.

Akitas are not a dog for the faint hearted.
