Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Underground fence systems
« on: February 19, 2006, 10:27:25 am »
We have Invisible Fence and love it.Ā
We have a neighbor that lets their beagle roam the neighborhood off-lease.Ā  The beagle likes to tease our dog, Max, by coming over to our yard and sitting right at the boundary of our yard.Ā  Not once has he bolted past the line to go play with her.

But as a word of caution, another neighbor has the same system and their dog ended up in our backyard.Ā  Turns out they let the battery go dead.

Positives for us:Ā  cheaper than regular fence, neighbor dog could come over and play, not wanting to box in our yard, invisible fence in front yard where we wouldn't have been able to put up real fence

Other words of caution: must be diligent with training, kids/other dogs won't be kept out of yard, remember to take collar off when going for walks or trips, need to replace batteries

Will it help if you delete cookies?Ā  I think I've been able to vote a couple of times this morning.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Say What?? A Must Read!!
« on: February 15, 2006, 12:29:19 pm »
Iā€™ve really grown to appreciate this site in the last couple of days.Ā  Iā€™ve always been a frequent visitor/lurker/reader, but never really a poster.Ā  Actually, Iā€™ve never really been much of a poster on any board.Ā  Iā€™m shy online as I am in real life.Ā

However, recently Iā€™ve found how intentionally cruel people can be on message boards (another board, not BPO).Ā  Long story sorta short, a group of volunteers from a rescue group where we adopted Max are working as part of a fundraiser to win one of those ā€œVote for my dogā€ contests.Ā  As part of the campaign for our dog, one of the volunteers posted on a message board asking people if they would vote.Ā  A person responded claiming our campaign was just a scam, had done this last year, that the person was going to use the money for a shopping spree, and that they would do what they could to keep our dog from having a chance to win.Ā  I posted in defense of the volunteer (a calm defenseā€¦or rather a plea to stop with untruthful posts).Ā  The person then responded with the same lie, not taking any time to research any of the links/information provided which show the group is a legitimate rescue group.Ā

Iā€™ve cried over sad movies and sad books, but never over a post on a message board before.Ā  Ā I just couldnā€™t/canā€™t understand why people lie and intentionally like to stir up trouble.Ā  Naive, I know.

But that is what makes BPO stand outā€”it just overflows with support and kindness (and cute pictures).Ā  No internet trolls lurking around to throw insults and cause pointless drama.Ā

So this is my thank you to Big Paws!Ā  Thank you for the hard work!Ā  Thank you for creating a place to go to that provides helpful advice, smiles and laughs, and at times a virtual shoulder to cry on.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Ramp recommendations?
« on: February 15, 2006, 11:17:20 am »
After owning a Nissan Sentra for years but soon learning a compact car and growing dog arenā€™t super compatible, we bought a small SUV this weekend (a Honda CRV).

Though Max has no apparent hip problems yet, Iā€™m not comfortable having him jump down out of the car repeatedly.

Ramps Iā€™ve found online range in price (some more than $150).Ā  Does anyone have any recommendation s that are reasonable in price and weight?

We also thought about building a ramp ourselves.Ā  However, with the back seats pushed forward, we have about 4 feet in length to work with (when storing the ramp inside the car).Ā  The ramp then would be at a very steep angle that just doesnā€™t seem climbable.

Thanks.

If using internet explorer, click on Tools, Internet Options, then midway through the window that opens click Delete Cookies, then click OK.Ā  This should do it.Ā  It took me awhile to learn.Ā  Somedays it was no problem for me to vote, others it showed me as having voted already.Ā  It was frustrating.

Thanks everyone for your votes.Ā  It continues to the end of the month (February).Ā  It appears we are close to first (highest I've noticed is 8.4), but it's getting more and more difficult to raise our average.Ā

As I mentioned in another thread, my husband and I adopted our dog Max last year from the rescue and I'm trying to help out a group that brought him into our lives. My husband thinks I'm obsessed with helping Clyde's mom win this for the rescue, but hey, at least I'm going crazy for a good cause.Ā

Thanks again, Melissa

Everyone, please do what you can.Ā  It's for a great cause.Ā  The rescue needs all the support it can get!

Though I've been just a gnawer when it's comes to posting, I was hoping for a little help.Ā

My husband and I adopted our saint, Max, from the Illinois Saint Bernard Rescue last year.Ā  A fellow rescue volunteer and adoptive mom had a great idea for a fundraiser and is asking our group to please get the word out to vote for her saint, Clyde, at:
http://www.1800petmeds.com/petcontest/vote/5636979744460013916

Clyde came from a home where he was kept outside, abused and neglected.Ā  Luckily, he made his way into the rescue, was cared for, and adopted out last December.Ā  Ā If Clyde wins, he will donate all winnings to Rescue!

If and when you have the chance, please vote for Clyde.Ā  (I think you can vote once a day).Ā  Our dog Max has meant so much to my husband and me, and we thank the rescue for bringing us together.Ā

Thanks,

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Prong/Pinch collars??
« on: November 09, 2005, 04:41:02 pm »
We also try to use a pinch collar whenever we go out with Max.  He just seems to listen better when it's on.  Our dog trainer, who has a newf, also uses a prong collar when she takes her dog out in public.

Congrats!

We use a slicker brush.  The shedding seems to be continuous, but is at its greatest with Max the day after his bath.  We also have a comb to help with mats, which luckily aren't common for him.

We bought a raised feeder from Farm and Fleet for Max (Before we got one, we improvised by putting his bowls on an empty Tivo box).  It's in our kitchen with 3 bath mats (not the fuzzy kind) under it.  Even with the mats, Max still makes water trails after he drinks.  I think we bought cheap mats from Walmart or Meijer.

Max has a normal nylon collar.  He's not a swimmer and we take it off for bath time, so it rarely gets wet.  However, it could still stink...I guess I haven't smelled it.   :)

I agree with Nicole.Ā  Illinois St. Bernard Rescue would be another good rescue.

We adopted our dog from this rescue this past July.Ā  They always have a need for volunteers and foster families.

Here's another site for them:Ā  http://members.petfinder.org/~IL177/index.htm
