My brother and I could'nt be anymore opposite.
He get's a Pony for Christmas and worries about what he's going to do with the manure!
I get a sack of horse manure and start looking for my new Pony!
Follow your heart. Love your babies, provide for them, kick it up to God, and you will be taken care of.
Our animals love us without conditions.
There can be no greater love than that.

Too Funny!
C'mon Nicker, get it together.
I sold the mobile home I lived in and moved into a dog friendly apartment complex in Clovis. The mobile home complex had too many "Rats on a Rope!" and Tulsa terrorized all, owners and "Rats", we're really happy here. Just across the street from Clark Intermediate. She's learned how to play soccer, is a GREAT outfielder in softball, and loves all the little kids that play there with their parents in the evenings.
Welcome back,
John

Tulsa was named at the Shelter that I rescued her from. So city names would work.
I like Daphne, Oleander, Sweet Pea. Or Boston, I knew a Gordon Setter named Oakland, he was black and silver!
Saw a dog on petfinders.com named Phoebe Buffay!
There are lots of options.
If you're stuck on Sydney, that works!

Of course!
A dog, regardless of breed, is only as good as its' Master.
You have to be diligent, understanding, forgiving, diligent, forgiving, etc., etc.
Your boy will someday meet a dog that doesn't want to be layed upon, that's when the lesson will be learned. It will up to you to determine what his reaction will be, and be prepared to deal with it.
There are various forms of agression and dominance.
Be prepared to handle your animals reaction to another animals reaction.
If they can walk away unscathed and unscarred, physically and emotionally, then you've done a good job.
If you walk away cursing the other dog, or its' Master, then you have to go back to school!
It's OK to tell the other dogs Master that he/she is F%#ed up, when your dog has done everything right.
Just make sure that you know your dog!

Again! Can't stress this subject enough! Training, Socialization,.
It ain't the breed people!
It's the responsibility of the Master to make the dog.
Pits are wonderful animals.
A new quote from Forrest Gump: Stupid people make Stupid Dogs!
I get tense when I see a new Pit in the dog park. I relax when I see that their master is intent on making their dog acceptable to the rest.
Dogs are dogs, people are folks.
I'd rather deal with the dogs than their folks.
More Truth, Trust, and a lot less B.S.
Don't tell my how hard you've worked with your dog.
Turn 'em loose and show me  how well they play together.
I "KNOW" my dog, I 'know' how she will react to others advances.
The first 5 minutes in the dog park are spent figuring out what is going on. My dog at my  feet, observing, figuring out who she can dominate, who she can 'play' with , and who will play back.
Breed or size doesn't matter.
She likes to play!
And she knows to adjust her play to the dog she's playing with!
Wally, a Scottish Terrier, sent Tulsa home on several occasions with major puncture wounds in her throat, Tulsa tolerated this treatment, lying on her back, and pushing Wally away on occasion. But she invited the invasion. The wounds weren't life threatening, and the playtime was fulfilling for her and Wally.
Redundantly Yours,
John

Great pic!
Caption should be: Anybody got Hot Sauce?
Just kidding, this is what I mean about our kids knowing their responsibiliti es.
Wish I'd had the same insight raising my 2 legged kids!

My ex has a Chi named Maggie. All 3 lbs. And she is a total bitch, very alpha, very demanding, very much a dog. She is great to take out to dinner, her little black nose barely pokes out of the big purse, when she demands her tribute of steak. Small bites, please, I am a little lady. More...More... Enough!
She respects Tulsa, and her size, respects her space, her presence.
Tulsa lies down on her back and Maggie gnaws on her!
You can almost hear Tulsa giggle!
The bond between a big dog and a little dog is complicated.
I think it comes down to...
Let live and be loved

« on: August 14, 2005, 01:18:30 am »
Yes!
That is so true and insightful.
Our BIG dogs have their territory, it is no larger than a small dogs. It is as big as the dogs master allows it to be. Training, socializing, etc. etc., GAWD I'm beggining to sound like an old 45 in the Groove. I guess I've 'aged' myself, but that's OK.
I get worked up when I see people come to the dog park and keep their companions on leash, that's what the double gates are for. Turn them loose! Let them be dogs, they'll sort out their issues!
Don't let your pets suffer the same OCD,s, they will help you through the turmoil!
Just let your dogs be dogs.

The big dogs know their place, the little dogs establish their place among the dogs, it doesn't matter the size of the dog, what matters is the size of the heart in the dog.
Our canine friends look to us for guidance and protection, regardless of their size. We have to be consistent  in how we reflect this love, and how we distribute it. A lot of love goes along way, whether it be toward a big dog, or a small dog. They are not aware of their size, but of the size of love they are given.

Tulsa just got her butt kicked by a 20 lb, French Bulldog! She could have grabbed and shook and provided another Vietnamese Menu Item. But she was a lady, and came to me for guidance. By the end of the walk, all were friends. Training and socialisation are of utmost importance.
Big dogs know their place, little dogs have to protect themselves.
Big dogs have to be the leaders to show the little dogs the "Way"
Why can't we just be friends?

I have yet to see a small dog so bold as to intimidate a big dog to destructive aggression.
My big dog will first avoid, then smoosh with a paw and avoid again, when that doesn't work she will come to me for protection. If my actions toward the small dog upsets its' master, then my BIG Dog goes into 'Protect' mode, she will lie at my feet and growl, they usually leave the dog park if they have half a brain. I've also watched my BIG Dog lie down and let the little dog use her for a 'chew toy'! When she's had enough she lets the little dog know, and they part company amicably. Little dog with ego intact, big dog knowing it will have something good to eat when she gets home.
It's not the dogs that have a problem with each other, it's the masters!
I let my BIG Dog choose who she wants to play with.
Dogs, large or small, when well trained, will always look to their masters for guidance.
There's no such thing as too much training, or socialization.
Don't be afraid of your dog parks, dogs are dogs! Be afraid of their masters!

WOW!
You Lucky Dog Lover!
10 Large!
Let's see the wish list and how much it has shrunk.
The kids (Two legged kind) can fend for themselves, put 'em to work so they can have a check to cash.
The babies, (Furry Kind) need all the help they can get.
I'm happy for you!
