Labrador Retriever Discussions / Cooper update
« on: December 31, 2005, 10:06:44 pm »
We brought Cooper to the vet yesterday, and he's 39 lbs at 15 1/2 weeks... poor Sammy is down to 66 lbs...

When Sam was 4 months, he weighed 37 lbs... and Cooper isn't even 4 months yet and he's 39! Sam, in his prime, was 112.

He sure is growing at a good clip, I got him his "big boy" crate today. I looked at the carrier he came in and can't believe he actually fit into it!

Here's a picture I took 3 days ago... he was chewing on his towel  :)

Newfoundland Discussions / Questions...
« on: December 11, 2005, 10:39:42 pm »
I have a couple of questions...

When do newfs usually start to drool? I met a 4 1/2 month old and she didn't have any sign of drool on her.

I was talking to a trainer for Cooper the other day, and mentioned that I want a newf, he said that newfs have extremely bad hip dysplasia and that they are so inbred... is this true? I know big dogs get hip dysplasia, but I heard from a couple of breeders that it's not any worse than labs...

any other comments/questions?

Labrador Retriever Discussions / UTI?
« on: December 10, 2005, 01:19:04 pm »
Cooper has been peeing A LOT lately. I take him outside, and he goes right away... and usually a couple of times. When I take him inside, he whines and wants to go out again. At first, I just thought he wanted to play outside, so I just ignored it and tried to play with him inside {it's cold out...}, but he goes to the backdoor and sits down... then he paces around the house, and pees while he's walking. I took him outside, and he peed like 6 times! What really gets me is that he pees while he's walking. Is this normal? Do you guys think it's an infection? The vet told us to give him some adult food along with the puppy chow, do you think that might be the problem???

Help!

Labrador Retriever Pictures / Update on Cooper
« on: December 05, 2005, 12:01:39 am »
Hello!

It seems like I haven't really posted in forever! but I thought I'd let you all know what's been going on over here.

Cooper is such a good boy... even though he's a tyrant  ;) He's getting better with commands, we just have to re-enforce them some more.

He saw his first snow Sunday, and loves it!! He stayed outside for hours playing  :)

We took him to the vet today, and other than having an ear infection, he's fine! He weighs 28.5 lbs, which is a little over what he's supposed to be {But he's not fat} so the vet recommended adding a little bit of adult food with his puppy chow.

Kaysee and Cooper met for the first time today. Cooper was very roudy. Kaysee would go sit down and Cooper would jump on him and be like "c'mon, lets play! puhleeezz can we play!?!"  ;D

The pictures that I have are a couple of weeks old... the newest ones are from the 25... are camera died, so we got a new one, and now we can't get the pictures off of it, so we have to return it  :-\

Enjoy!!

{the pics are in order from oldest to newest =] }

Remembering those no longer with us. / World's Ugliest dog died today...
« on: November 21, 2005, 06:12:45 pm »
Aww, poor pup...

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sam, the tiny dog whose hairless body and crooked teeth earned him a reputation as the World’s Ugliest Dog, has died.

The pooch died Friday, just short of his 15th birthday, his owner said.

“I don’t think there’ll ever be another Sam,” Susie Lockheed said, adding: “Some people would think that’s a good thing.”

Sam won the ugliest dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair this summer for the third year in a row. The pedigreed Chinese crested had made appearances on TV in Japan, radio in New Zealand and in Britain’s Daily Mirror tabloid. He also had met Donald Trump on a talk show set.

Lockheed said she initially was terrified of Sam when she agreed to take him in as a rescue dog six years ago on a 48-hour trial basis. Although she fell in love with him, his appearance repulsed her then-boyfriend and prompted the man to break up with her.

Later, however, Sam became a matchmaker by bringing together Lockheed and her current beau, who saw a picture of the two on an online dating site.

Lockheed said she had Sam euthanized after she learned Sam’s heart was failing.

She said she’s felt a little lost ever since, and is sleeping with Sam’s favorite toy — a stuffed bear he picked up and carried home.

I have a question... is peanut butter OK to give to an 8 week old lab? ???

We gave some to Cooper, and he's got gas now... but we don't know if it was that or something else he ate.

Labrador Retriever Pictures / He's finally here!!
« on: November 10, 2005, 01:01:05 am »
After waiting for 10 looong weeks, our pup is finally here!!!

We got him at the airport, and he was laying in his waste... YUCK!!! Took him out of his crate in the waiting room and he piddled on the floor... told the lady he christened her floor   ;D  He was so cute! He came right over to us and started licking us and playing... he wasn't scared at all!! We brought him home and he scoped at the house, sniffing and trying to chew on EVERYTHING. He was so playful, and would just run around the house. He went to the bathroom soo many times, and chowed down his food! A good eater! We put him in his crate to sleep, and started howling/whinning for about 10 minutes, but then went to sleep.

I'm so happy! And he's so cute... the little pudger  ;D

I'll post pics really soon!

This makes me so mad...

Here is an article from the Post that someone sent me:

 PUGGLE POWER POOCH

By RAAKHEE MIRCHANDANI

November 3, 2005 --  Hybrids are hot — and we're not talking about gas mileage.

The puggle — the result of a one-night stand between a beagle and a pug — has families cooing and cuddling all over New York. Even tough-guy "Soprano" James Gandolfini recently bought one of the black-nosed rascals.

"Everyone is clawing for them, it's ridiculous," said Brian Incovaia of Metro Puppy Kennels in Forest Hills, Queens. "I get people calling left and right for them and basically you get the equivalent of breeding a Marc Jacobs bag with a Louis Vuitton."

Incovaia's designer dogs range from $650-$900, and less is more; the smaller the puppy, the higher the puggle price tag.

"The puggles are the most in demand. And they're just the cutest little dogs," said Garry Garner, president of the American Canine Hybrid Club, which registers and recognizes more than 200 hybrid dog breeds.

More people are turning to designer hybrids because of their temperament, allergy-safe fur or plain cuteness.

The Australian Labradoodle, a cross between a Labrador retriever and a poodle, started the designer-dog trend more than 15 years ago. The careful cross-breeding resulted in a curly-haired, friendly and hypoallergenic dog that had people paying close to $2,000 a puppy.

"Lately, people have been coming in and looking and calling especially for puggles. These are hot in Manhattan right now because they make great apartment dogs," said Michael Rubin, manager at Puppy Paradise on Flatbush Avenue.

Rubin says he's carried puggles for the last seven years but adds he's seen interest in the breed take off within the last couple of years — and he's sold 250 in the last year.

Brooklyn resident Stephen Padovano found his puggle by accident. Padovano spent the day cruising the shelters for a dog for his 18-year-old daughter, Dana, but thought they were all too big. After he stopped at Puppy Paradise, Bella worked her way into his heart.

"This dog will jump through hoops to try and please you. She's very lovable, she doesn't shed that much and she knows exactly what I want her to do," he said about his 6-month-old puggle puppy. "I was worried in the beginning that my neighbors would complain about her barking, but they tell me she has the cutest little howl."

But not everyone is barking the praises of the designer dogs. Lisa Peterson, spokeswoman for the American Kennel Club, says she think this trend is out of control.

"Here's the thing, people who breed designer dogs are cross-breeding with the hopes of getting the best of both worlds. They may get the worst of both worlds," she said. "Hybrids are trendy because they are new. It's the equivalent of buying the new 'It' shoe or bag.

"I'd like to know how long these breeders have been breeding puggles. Do they own a beagle and their friend has a poodle and they get together and breed a puggle?" she said. "Historically, all breeds were bred to help man out to hunt, herd or as a companion. What is the purpose of a puggle?"

For some buyers, it may simply be the name. Both Peterson and Rubin agree that New Yorkers love the idea of a pup called a peekapoo or a Labradoodle.

"They're not really breeds. Tomorrow someone could breed a Great Dane with a mastiff and they call it a Great Stiff," Peterson said.
