Rare Breed Mastiff Discussions / Re: Breed Question?
« on: August 23, 2005, 03:08:22 pm »
One of my sons wants one - heaven forbid!  From what I've read about them, they aren't for the faint-hearted. They can weigh more than 200 pounds and, as someone else mentioned, they are used for fighting.  Although, again from what I've read, the Japanese fighting wasn't quite what we have going on here (ie tossing 2 dogs in a ring and last dog standing wins).  I read that Tosa fighting as akin to sumu wrestling (I maybe wrong, but that sounds a bit like a watered down version of Tosa fighting history).  Unlike shibas, Tosas are a "created" breed, selective cross breeding to produce desired attributes.  We may be seeing more of them in the future ... I noticed that the AKC has been keeping lineage records for Tosas, much like they do for recognized breeds - who knows ... maybe a prelim for applying for AKC.

Akita Discussions / Re: Akitas and off-leash dog parks?
« on: August 18, 2005, 08:09:55 am »
I agree with the others ... akitas can be socialized to accept other dogs. Our akita, Joji, absolutely *loves* other dogs.  I have yet to see her act aggressive with a dog, although, she tried to assert dominance in one setting where she was temporarily staying with a friend and the friend brought a new dog into the household.

Overall, I've found that dog parks can be a crap shoot; they really depend on the people who go. The regulars generally don't let anything get out of hand between dogs and the dogs have a good time, but once-a-year visitors tend to bring in dogs who are not socialized and fights break out. Just a thought ... usually regulars show up at parks about the same time every day (or at least routinely) ... you might want to try to find a such a group and go regularly. I'm sure your dog will benefit from the regular dog-interaction.  Good luck!

What great stories ... I notice that many of our dogs use their eyes to convey their desires. Well, eyes and heads (which mine do too ... mostly eyes boring holes through me as if they were trying to hypnotize me into "doing their will").  But I am glad I don't get the head butts some of ya'll get!  :D

OMG - jjfritsche, I am glad I am not the only one!  For some reason I found that clip heartbreakingl y sad and hysterically funny at the same time...

Ditto -- I was laughing aloud ... but in the end, I'm shaking my head, thinking 'unbelievable.'  And she is the reason why non-dog-lovers are screaming for breed bans and no dog parks.

 sheez    :(

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Re: Hello Everyone . Newbie Here
« on: August 09, 2005, 02:45:15 pm »
Welcome and hello, fellow Big Paw lover. This is a fun BB ... lots of smart advice, funny stories and, best of all, wonder photos of the dogs we love.

No need to wade first, jump on in ... the water is great.   :D

I work with both of mine together also ... most of the easy commands (sit, wait, down) were a snap because the younger dog learned from the older one. Working on heel was a little harder having the "baby" around. The younger saw the older one on a leash and thought it was her golden opportunity to tackle him while his attention was diverted and he was restrained!  Whatta sneak! :D

Welcome!  Everyone else has already wrote it ... this is a great BB for us dog-loving folks.  I've got a 15 mo. old akita (Joji) and we think she's the cat's meow. We've also got a 3-yr. old shiba (he's the little big brother).
Again, welcome!

That's great!! Loved it!

We intro'd our shiba to our new akita in our back yard. Because the shiba was a strictly inside dog and we had just moved into our home, he hadn't claimed the yard yet. We had to spend hours in the back yard during the following 3 days, letting them get to know each other before Oni accepted Joji as a member of the pack.
We also did not shower Joji with attention, always greeted Oni first before Joji.
They get along great now - inseparable.

Great Dane Pictures / Re: A picture to make you go AWE

What a sweet photo ... you should frame it.

I'm a shiba lover ... our other dog is a shiba. ;-)  I'm not at all surprised that little shiba thought he could hang with the big dawgs. ;-)

Your photo is great ... reminds me of when our shiba plays with our akita. Even though there's a 70-pound weight difference, the shiba bowls over the big girl!

Hilarious!

Do my eyes deceive me but is one of those "little dogs" a shiba??

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: For Discussion: Cloning Dogs??
« on: August 04, 2005, 12:48:06 pm »
On the flip side ... if I could be cloned, I could put in a 10-hour day at work, clean house, cook dinner and go out and shop all day without anyone being the wiser. :-)

I was just thinking this morning (as I was doing my daily poop-scoop chore) how great it would be to have an area on the Web that listed user opinions on various dog-related services.  For example, posters could identify the location (or state) and service in the subject line (eg: Kansas City, groomer) and in the body give a paws up or down, or do a 1, 2, 3 bark rating, on that dog service. Maybe even add a line or two explaining why they gave that rating. Sort of like an Angie's List but specifically for dog-related services. Something really simple - no chatting or messaging other than posting an opinion.

Like a lot of others, I'm not always sure who to call for boarding, grooming or dog-sitting and I value the opinion of someone who has had contact with a business before me.

Just a puppy thought ...   :D

Bills & Other Legislative Acts / Re: Breed-specific legislationi
« on: August 04, 2005, 08:53:14 am »
Hope you find something you can use and keep me posted if you do anything and what happens. You're so right ... even local-level politicians are more reactionary than pro-action. It seems everyone, ie general public, thinks only in quick fixes vs. getting to the root of the problem.  Evne though I use the term "quick fix," that doesn't hardly seem to apply regarding BSL, because it doesn't "fix" anything.

Good luck!
