Orion-- I love stars and Orion is a constalation of a warrior- I was actually on the beach at a bonfire, looked up saw "Orion" and decided that was going to be his name.

Aspen IV came named to us... his litter was the A litter..

Kiahali means unique in hawaiiaan :)

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Does your dog have a nickname?
« on: October 12, 2005, 08:21:13 pm »
Hello all, does your dog have a nickname or names?
Orion - is kitty.... when we brought him home he was the runt and only 3lbs, with his cropped ears and his little body he reminded my  mom of a little kitten and the name has stuck.  We aslo call him  "O" and kitty cane corso ( gotta say it fast :)

Aspen came prenamed to us as we raised him for CCI and he did not make the cut ( low work ethic)  we have just recently starting calling him Woo Woo also :)  One of the things I am teaching him to do is to say his name... it is pretty cute!

Kia's full name is kiahali...  she as of this moment doens't have a true nickname.

Canine Companions (CCI) is holding it annual Snoopy Dogfest on Saturday October 15th from 11-3pm at the SUNY Farmingdale Campus.  You can walk your dog to raise money for CCI ( and recieve a cool gift bag) visit the vendors that they have and see great demostrations . I beleive you can also have your dog tested for it Canine Good Citzen :)  It is also a great oppurtunity to "dog watch" and see tons of diffent breeds.

From LIE ( 495) exit 49s  go about 2-3 miles make Right in to SUNY Farmingdale Campus & follow the Snoopy signs

From Southern State Exit 32 N go about 3 miles, pass Adventurland, at next light make Left into SUNY Farmigndale Campus & follow the Snoopy Signs.

If you would like more info go to www.cci.org    northeast region

Hope to see some of you there! ( I might be doing a demo and I will be walking my Cane Corso ( brindle) lab ( yellow) and bullmastiff x cane corso puppy ( fawn)

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: NEED HELP!! new newfie puppy
« on: October 09, 2005, 09:00:23 pm »
Hello, I don't know if this had been posted, so I apologize if it has.  Seperation anxiety is a hard issue to deal with.  My new pup had it when i got her and she is doing alot better now ( i have had her 7 wks) Couple of suggestions:

1. when you enter or leave the room do not be emotional, i would go as far as not to even talk to her for 3-5 minutes

2. whenever you do leave her, give her a high value bone ( stuffed kong, bully stick, greenie) when you return , practice "drop" and take it away from her.  DO this many times during the day.

3. a tired puppy is a good puppy.  excercising her mentally and physically. I train my pup probably 8 -10 times a day ( 2-5 minute session) and she gets lots of excercise with other dogs and one on one with walking.

4. leave classical music on when she is in the crate.

5. If you can have her sleep in a crate in your bedroom.  ( I just moved my pups crate out of my bedroom a nd she is doing great)

6. If she is throwing a tantrum ( my puppy used to get anxious when getting out of the crate and all she would jump on my and paw at me, do not correct that physically it will only intensify it. Just ignore it and look away).

7. I would get the pup checked for a uti and a stool sample for parisities. Although it does sound like she is getting herself so worked up that she is eliminating.  IF you can calm her down on the inside, the toileting behavior shoud get better.

I would go with a Cane Corso.. very obedient, good agility. MY CC will allow new people in only if I tell him it is ok. People that he know he lets in with a bark and a wagging "stub:)"  I can have people come up to my car and unless they move in a threatning way he is fine.  I can tell him to "watch the car" and if I leave, he will "protect" the car only if someone approachs.  Most of all he looks intimadating, and that is the big key.  And with people hw know he is the biggest mush. Out of all my dogs he is a total momma's boy !    He does drool in the summer though, and he is not that fond of new dogs that are over 6 months old, although he will tolerate them.
Hoep this is useful for you!
