Anything Non-Dog Related / Current Backyard Pictures
« on: January 09, 2006, 07:36:36 pm »
Recently  angelsmama posted a pic of her cute pupper slobbering her with kisses (such a cute pupper).  I noticed that there wasn't a lick of snow anywhere!   She told me it was SIXTY TWO DEGREES that day!!!  :o
That got me wondering how different the weather is in BPO backyards.

So...run outside and snap a shot or two.

Here are mine.....

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I wonder how they know.....
« on: January 08, 2006, 12:09:42 am »
Today (Sunday) was not a good day.   I had the worst seizure yet.
During the "hectic time"of getting me into the house my husband had the kids gate the dogs. The dogs were freaking out.  My husband put me in the guest room (there was no way I could make it upstairs) and I remember pleading, "Please let the dogs in."
He actually gave in to my request before calling the ER.  Good thing I got his priorities straight.  ;) (It only involved unlatching the baby gate as he walked to the phone)

Jack (my oldest) immediately crawled in bed right next to me.  He's like butter.  He molds right to me....head next to my shoulder...nev er taking those chocolate eyes off of me and laying perfectly still.
Jilly kept watch from the foot of the bed...also perfectly still.
Daisy......wel l.....Daisy hasn't quite got the hang of it yet.  I sort of remember 111 lbs of Daisy sitting across my legs and my husband pulling her off.  She really is still at an age where she needs me more than she needs to watch over me.

Jack really is my hero.  He always knows when I'm ill.
I don't know how he knows but he does.
He was howling at the door before my husband brought me in from the car today.
He just always knows when something is wrong with me.
I don't know how many times....from the flu...to a bad day...to this recent health issue ....that Jack's fur has soaked up my tears.    He's always there.
Aren't dogs the best?
Aw....who am I kidding?   I'm preaching to the choir.  :)

Neapolitan Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / Daisy is ONE today!! 1/6/2006
« on: January 05, 2006, 10:41:01 pm »
We adopted Daisy from the shelter when she was 5.5 months old.  I can't believe that she is already ONE!  It's difficult to remember when she wasn't a part of our family.

Unfortunately Daisy had to go to visit Dr. Anna (our vet) today.

Good news......Dais y weighs 111.9 lbs.

Bad news.....Bad news comes in threes right?

1 - Daisy's  left ear has a bad infection. I thought it was yeast but it's worse. When Dr. Anna flushed it Daisy whimpered and began to shiver.  It obviously hurt quite a bit.  Poor girl.   So....Ointment morning and night & a solution to flush it out at noon.  Recheck in 2 weeks.

2 - the bump on Daisy's leg is either a bug bite or a bacterial thingy of some sort (I don't remember what Dr. Anna called it ) but the ointment for her ear can be used on it for the next 2 weeks and it will be rechecked.

3 -  The famous anal sacs.  Dr. Anna says, "Everything on Daisy is BIG and her anal sacs are no exception!"   yea...I'm so proud.   ::)   Usually Daisy doesn't mind having this done but since her ear hurts so badly she isn't very cooperative and it takes 2 of us to hold her plus Dr. Anna doing her thing in the back end.  ugh!    Here's the worst part....Dr. Anna got 1/4 CUP out of Daisy!!   I don't know anal sacs but that seems like a lot to me!!!

So...now my birthday girl is asleep at the end of the bed.   She smells a bit better.  Her butt is washed, her ear is lubed up and she had a special dinner.
I wanted to take a special birthday pic to post but I just don't have to heart to bug her.   Poor stinky girl.

Anything Non-Dog Related / UPDATE - Some nice news I want to share
« on: January 04, 2006, 02:11:16 pm »
I asked for a date for Christmas.  Sounds silly, huh?  But I've had a rough autumn....deal ing with newly diagnosed seizures resulting in no driving, no work...blah, blah, blah.   My hubby has had to pick up all the driving responsibiliti es of taking me to doc appts, grocery shopping, christmas shopping, vet appts and running our 2 teens around....it leaves little US time.
Believe it or not...he hasn't complained once.  He's great.

Tonight I'm cashing in on a great Christmas gift from my husband.
He bought tickets for US to a play.  Not just any play but Peter Pan.  A play that I will totally enjoy but one that wouldn't be a top choice for him.  How cool is that? A totally unselfish choice.  We are going to dinner first.  Dinner without KIDS!!!   YES!!!  AND our kids are old enough that I don't have to arrange for babysitters.   ;D

I'm so excited I could burst.  This is the best Christmas gift.
He's so wonderful.   He even got a small bottle of water so that I can take my seizure med right on time during the play at 9pm.  (it's essential that themeds are taken right on time)

I love love love him.
Well....at least for now.  ;)

Ok....gushing is over now.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / laser pointer?
« on: January 03, 2006, 04:51:07 pm »
Jilly & Daisy will chase a laser pointer forever.
Jilly knows that "All Done" means the laser pointer is gone.
Daisy will look for it for hours.
Jack thinks it's stupid and won't chase it for anything.

Will your pupper chase a laser pointer?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Do dogs get warts?
« on: January 02, 2006, 11:09:38 pm »
Daisy has this....this.. ..lumpy thing on the inside of her front leg.
I almost took a picture but thought that might be too gross.
It looks too big to be a pimple.
It does have a tiny spec of blood on it but basically it looks like a wart.

Any ideas?

Games & Jokes / Sudoku anyone?
« on: January 01, 2006, 03:14:42 pm »
My stupid husband got me addicted to this game.
He plays on paper with a pencil.
I like playing on the computer....be cause if I had to use a pencil I'd probably end up erasing through the paper.

Anyone else playing this addictive game?

Good News!!  Everyone has been adopted.

Cartman (kitten) - Went to a friend's mother.  He's living the sweet life with a little old lady who dotes on him.  ;D

Butters & Kyle (kittens) - returned to the shelter yesterday and were both adopted within an hour of the shelter opening for the day.  ;D

Binks (mama), Tweak (kitten), & Stan-lee (kitten) were all adopted into the same home.  A loving family with 3 large dogs who all seem to love kitties.  Especially the huge Neo.

-Wendy

Yea...yea..... the last family is mine.  I wanted to keep them all!  I managed to give away 3....that's half!  I love the newest members of our family.   I'll post some pics soon.
And yes.....Daisy got to keep BOTH of her favorite kittens.   :)

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Smelly Ear?
« on: December 30, 2005, 12:16:29 pm »
Daisy's ear is smelly.  Not the normal dog smell but stinky, blucky, don't want to stick your nose close to that side of her head smelly.    Her other ear looks great.
She's not itching it and she lets me clean it.   I get a ton of wax out each time I clean it.
It's a bit pinker than her other ear.
Vet said that if nothing changes then to keep wiping out the wax and they will check it at Daisy's checkup on Friday. (SHE WILL BE ONE!!!)

Whenever Jack (our hound mix) has had an ear problem (usually yeast) he would dig it like crazy and he'd moan if I rubbed his ear to relieve the itchyness.   We ended up having the vet flush it really well and I'd follow up with a steroid spray, some benadryl, and an antifungal.

This seems different.
Thoughts on what this could be?

-Wendy

This is different.

Just got a call from the foster care person at the shelter.
She's scheduled the kittens to be returned on friday.
One kitten still needs to be fixed.  They are making the appointment for friday and then they will pick the kitten up.  So I won't see her again.  :(
This is harder than I thought it would be.

Daisy seems to have dumped Tweak in favor of Stan.

I spend a lot of time touching Daisy's feet so that she won't freak out when I do so.
She does NOT like her nails cut.
Last night I clipped a back nail and she growled and spun her head around like she was going to bite me.    I was 1% scared and 99% ANGRY.   I grabbed her on the top of her muzzle and said, "NO BITE!"  and a few other choice words because I was furious.
I touched her feet again and she did it again.   I repeated what I did and then I made her leave the room.   I was so angry that I'm not sure I handled it in the best way possible.   This morning she is letting me touch her feet without issue.

Daisy is almost 1 yr old.   Could it be age related?

Advice/suggestions welcome.

Holiday Things / I'm dreaming of a "light" Christmas...
« on: December 24, 2005, 10:08:26 pm »
Power was out from 9:30am until 2pm.
Luckily I had just finished cooking pancakes when we lost power.
Unfortunately we had to reschedule having relatives over for dinner.
You can imagine how thrilled the kids were when they couldn't try their new electronic gizmos & gadgets.
We did spend time together talking and laughing....an d that was great but we were really glad to have the electric come back on!

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!!!

Holiday Things / Christmas Eve Movie Suggestions?
« on: December 22, 2005, 12:03:04 pm »
We have a tradition of watching a movie as a family on xmas eve.
This year we are stuck for a selection.
When the kids were little they loved The Muppets Christmas Carol.
We've done the classics - Wonderful Life & Miracle
We've done Christmas Vacation, Scrooged (my fav), & Christmas Story (this is out because son had an incident with a paintball gun this past year.  ::) ).

Daughter is 16, Son is 14......and I'm....old enough to be their mom....and hubby is ancient (hehehehe....he's older than me and I don't let him forget it)

So....what's your favorite holiday movie?
What's a suggestion for our family?
If you really like something that we've already seen suggest it anyway.  We've done repeats before.

Merry Christmas.
