Alaskan Malamute Pictures / Re: Hi! New here!
« on: April 03, 2005, 07:58:05 pm »
Hi, I am new here also. I absoultely love my mal she is 10 weeks old and is completely wonderful and was the best dog at potty training, we are officially off of potty training pads.

Oh, is she an absolute doll!  What is her name?  If you have this little one potty trained at 10 weeks old, then you have a truly extraordinary Mal.  That is very encouraging!  Is this the first Mal you have ever had?  Hold onto her lots when she is this size, as it will not last long.....
Welcome to the site and keep sending pictures as she grows.

Thank you for your lovely comments.  I think they're gorgeous, but then, I'm biased.....

Okay, lines......fir st, Kayte is Cheelah's paternal grandmother.  We got Cheelah when she retired from her breeding program. Cheelah, she's easy.  She's out of Madelaine Seller's kennel - Cascade Alaskan Malamutes.

Now, Kayte.  She was bred by Drema Davidson @ Nyak Kennels outside of Houston. She's Cascade on both sire and dam's side. Kayte's dam's side has Yukonjak as well.
Kayte's Sire -- Nyak bred, Cascade on his dam (Cheelah)  Wild Wind on his sire.
Fun fact: I traced Kayte's Wild Wind's ancestry all the way back to Rowdy of Nome, interestingly.

And at last, Kiowa.  He retired out of the breeding program at 2 yrs. as he did not OFA.
He was Woodland's bred by Ryan Wood (this kennel no longer exists)
Sire -- Woodlands,Towbars, Snoqualmes
Dam -- Ttundra, Cascade, Yukonjak

That's about all I know.  I do know that things stay darned interesting with my little pack here!  I fell in love with Malamutes early in life, although I did not get one until 5 years ago. Unfortunately my first sweet girl stayed with my ex, but I was hooked.  I cannot live without a few underfoot...ho wling at 5 am...stepping on my feet....beggin g the landlord for candy....well, you know! I wouldn't know what to do if I got to go to the kitchen without causing an uproar! lol

Thanks for the info; I do appreciate it.  Am I to assume you are in the south as I am not familiar with the kennel names you have mentioned?  I am up in Wisconsin, and when I saw your black and whites, I thought of the line from Shilon and Dave Bedford of Black Ice Kennels in Minnesota, or the Totem line from Canada.  I had (2) b&w's at one time, a brother and sister, which were decendants from the Totem line and were absolutely beautiful.  Either way, once you are owned by one Mal, you are owned forever, that is how I became hooked!  Looking forward to more pictures.  Again, your b&w are stunning.

Hi Everybody,
I'm new here and I have 3 Alaskan Malamutes with some seriously big paws!  I can't help but post these pics...
My babies are: Cascade's Lady Cheelah -- 10 yrs
Woodland's Chief Kiowa of Nyak -- 3 yrs
                            Nyak's Scandalous Kayte -- 16 mos.

I get told quite often that I'm crazy for having these guys in the house, but they are the perfect house dogs. Unless you count coat-blowing time!!!  ;D

Welcome to the group and what an awesome group of Mals!  I love the pictures, and I am a huge lover of the black and whites.  I have raised Mals for over 20 years, and they have all been total house dogs and couch potatoes; not to mention pulling, sledding and a bit of time in the show ring. What line(s) do they originate from? They are beautiful, and it's great to see another Mal owner on this site.  Welcome!

Hi!  Name is Jeane and my kennel name is Mt High Aussies! Been owned by Aussies since 1976 and can't imagine life without them! Used to live in CO (20 years) and moved to TX in 1992! Hoping to get re-involved in some of the venues offered by ASCA!
So......can we hear about y'all???   :D

Jeane; My name is Beth and I am owned by an Alaskan Malamute, Raisa, and a Great Pyrenees, Czar.  We live in a very rural area in south central Wisconsin.  I have been owned by Alaskan Malamutes for (20) years, and have now been adopted by this big, lovable, polar bear, Czar.  I have also been involved in rescuing and placing a Landseer Newfoundland last year, and (3) Siberian Huskies in the past. They all now have wonderful, loving and healthy homes, and that is so important.
Welcome to the web site!

Alaskan Malamute Pictures / Raisa on St. Pat's Day in Snowy Wisconsin
« on: March 17, 2005, 09:15:22 pm »
Raisa the Alaskan Malamute hangs out during the St. Pat's Day snowstorm we are currently experiencing in Wisconsin.  She begs to stay outside and bury herself in the snow along her best friend Czar the Great Pyrenees.  Raisa would take this weather 365 days a year.

This is a picture I just took of Czar the Great Pyrenees in the middle of a St. Patricks Day snowstorm here in Wisconsin.  He hangs out with Raisa the Malamute and they both absolutley love this weather; they wouldn't have it any other way!  I hope I can find him in a couple of hours as he blends in so well with the white snow; all I can see are his eyes peeking out!

I think this might be too big a pic but I haven't learned how to make them smaller. This is Reddy on my new digital camera which I am just learning to use. No touch up. BonnieF

Reddy is so handsome and has the classic sad eyed look of a very content and happy Pyr!  Thank you for sharing; he looks like a big teddy bear who thinks he is a lap dog???

Wow..what a wonderful story of triumph and perserverance. It's sad to hear of the struggles she's faced so face in her young life. With your love and support I'm sure she'll live way far into old age.
Besides the pain meds, do you use any vitamins/supplements? I know that with our Bear they do help to keep his joints lubricated. He too may have dysplasia in his front legs, but since he is still growing and hasn't had any problems in the past few months I'm hopeful that the pain he had was just a bout with natural growing pains.  ;)

Thank you for your concern; she is an amazing Malamute, that is for sure!  She can still outrun my Pyr, Czar at any point in time in terms of speed, even with (1) not so good leg!  I have changed her dog food to Nutro Max with glucosamine for large breeds, and that has made a world of difference.  I am always open to suggestions that I could check with my vet on, as I always want to make sure she is comfortable at all times.  My Pyr went through the same growing pains you mention in Bear.  He had stiffness in his front legs when he was growing, but it subsided when he reached about 2 years old.  The vet recommended limiting excercise, jumping, etc at such a young age because they are growing so fast and those bones just can't keep up.  My wishes to you for Bear to grow out of it as he becomes older.  He is just so incredible...

Big Ben is absolutely stunning!  This picture does him very proud, I can tell.  What an incredible gentle giant....you are very lucky!

She is beautiful!  She is very lucky to have you as a parent!  Have you tried any of the joint health meds for her?  I've heard that they work wonders.... 8)

I have not tried any joint health meds, however upon the recommendation of my vet, I changed her food last May to Nutro Max for Large Breeds with Glucosamine, and I firly believe that has made a world of difference.  It has been suggested as an option to provide the joint tablets as well, but I am so skiddish on any medication that is not prescribed by a vet who knows Raisa's history, that I am afraid to take the plunge. The day I brought her home at 8 weeks, I immediately took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with aortic stenosis in her heart and she has a slight murmer, so I am always conscious of that; even though it does not effect her on a day to day basis.  Any advice on safe options would be appreciated. Thank you for the inquiry...

Have you tried blowing him out with his hair dryer (if he has one)? I know it kinda helps us. Other than that, I'm awaiting any other suggestions too. Bear has now broken 4 vacuums due to hair loss. Grrr....

A couple of suggestions may help.  You could look into purchasing a "blower" which is used for grooming purposes.  This device blows out cool air at varying speeds, which loosens the heavy under coat of working dogs.  It especially works well after a bath; but beware, this is best done outside if possible, otherwise your house could like like it has freshly fallen snow!  My Pyr will sit and almost fall asleep when I do this with him because it is so relaxing.  My Mal, on the other hand, runs at the sight of the blower and won't get near it.

Second suggestion.... our vacuum cleaner started on fire last weekend, so we broke down and bought the "Dyson" series vacuum cleaner that is specifically made for pet hair.  This machine is absolutely unbelievable.. ....we have gone through many vacuum cleaners the last 20 years of raising large breed dogs, and this vacuum cleaner by far surpassses any other on the market.  I would highly recommend it.  Pricey, yes, but I figure if this will last 5 years, I will have paid less than the combined purchase of 3-4 vacuums over that period of time.  It is also very lightwieght and is bagless; therefore no more bags to buy for the rest of my life.  Good luck!

What kind of challenges has she faced? Health problems?

When Raisa was just a little over a year old, she suffered FCE, which in our terms is a spinal embolism.  She had a severe stroke at the base of her spine that left her apralyzed in her back left leg for 3 months.  She has made a miraculous recovery, and now only has a slight limp and foot drag in that back leg.  This past May, she was then diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia and arthritis in both her back hips.  She is, however, one unbelievable fighter, and is doing very well. Nothing, gets this girl down, and I am so very proud of her for that fighting attitude and spirit. I know that could change at any time on any given day, but I manage her discomfort with Rimadyl on an as need basis and a booster of (1) adequan injection every 3 months or so.  I call Raisa my "miracle dog" and I am very grateful for her current health status and don't take one single day with her for granted.

Alaskan Malamute Pictures / Raisa-Favorite Season
« on: March 08, 2005, 08:00:30 pm »
This is Raisa during her favoriate time of the year.  Anytime the emperature is below 0, she is happy.  Her hair is incredibly thick like carpet, and she has not had a bath since the day I brought her home on June 3, 2000.  As the AKC breed standard states, Mals are a very clean and odorless dog, and it is so true.  However, the breed standard also says Mals are a non-barking dog.  This is so NOT true!  She very much lets me know when she wants an extra treat or double the attention!  She is affectionaly known is "sweet pea" because she is very shy.

Alaskan Malamute Pictures / New Introduction-Raisa
« on: March 08, 2005, 07:44:26 pm »
This is Raisa, my 4 year old Alaskan Malamute.  In this picture her and I had taken a break while hiking this past October at a state park near our home in Wisconsin.  She loves the outdoors, is very beautiful, extremely intelligent, independant, and very much like her closest ancestor the wolf.  She has faced several physical challenges in her short life, but we take and make every day count.  She loves hiking, but especially in the cold weather....her favorite!   Raisa has VERY BIG PAWS!
