Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Biospot
« on: September 09, 2005, 09:32:51 pm »
I am planning to try the biospot stuff when the Adams I am currently using runs out.  I was using the Frontline Plus, but it basically stopped working for me about 6  months ago.  I've used it for several years and never had any fleas and then about 6 months ago it seemed like it didn't last even a week anymore.  By the time I got to the end of the box, i was doing good if it got rid of the fleas  for even a few days.  I finally started using the Adams Mist at the suggestion of a friend and that has gotten things under control.  It is a pain to use, because the boys hate it andyou have to use it every week.
A friend who works where I get my dog food suggested the Biospot , which they had just started selling, so i plan to try it when my current supply of Adams runs out.  If anyone knows anything about it, I'd like to know also.

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Re: Question about Rescues
« on: September 09, 2005, 09:11:56 pm »
:-\  Thanks everyone.  Getting your opinions and feedback since I found this site has really helped me get thru some tough times, make informed decisions, taught me so much more about ALL the large breeds and been a place of comfort and acceptance.  THANKS SO MUCH!!
::) I was gonna go to bed and cry...I'm just too sensitive!    :-[

Definitely don't go to bed and cry about it.
Feste is my 2nd rescued Dane.  The first was set up by a friend who was a vet tech who knew of a Dane (My boy, Alexander the Great (Dane)) in need of a home at another vet.  Even though I had no giant breed experience, I did have large breed experience and he felt like it would be a good match.  Well it was just about the most wonderful experience I have ever had.  When Alex died suddenly of heart failure after I had spent a year nursing him back from abuse and stage IV heartworms, it nearly killed me.
After a little time had passed a friend started pushing me to look into either adopting another or fostering one.  I finally realized that I had something to offer a Dane in need and that it would be a good memorial to Alex, so I started looking into it.  I got very frustrated going through the process and dealing with the suspicious and sometimes hostile attitiudes.
I finally ended up talking to a (reputable) breeder in New Orleans (where Alex came from), who really helped me to cope with it.  It basically comes down to what the others in this post have said - they deal with at times horrible cases of abuse and /or neglect and work hard to ensure the dogs  get adopted into good homes only to see them come back sometimes.  It does, unfortunately, get to people at times.
My best advice to you is what that breeder told to me.  Be patient, be persistent and be honest.  People will see that and will work with you.
Best of luck to you... there's a rescue dog out there that needs you and you will find him or her.

where would I go with a combined 280 and growing lbs of dogs and 2 cats with bad attitudes

You're welcome to come here (although who goes to Florida to avoid a hurricane?!).  Some friends from Jax stayed here during an evacuation once with their six dogs (three of them great danes), two cats, ten snakes (two of them huge pythons), and who knows what else (they had a total of 39 animals with them).  They stayed with us for three or four days, and it was great!

And, I have more than 280 lbs of dog in my bed right now!  ;D

Thanks   :) LaurelG... I just wanted to take a moment and post thel latest I read earlier this afternoon....   The military is now taking animal cages with them on their evacuation and rescue runs... so that they can bring pets with their people.  Seems Gen. Honore, who's running the show has ordered it.
Here's a quote off the AOL news:  "In a shift, the military began providing cages to homeowners to allow them to evacuate with their pets. "We got the capacity, and it seemed like the right thing to do," said Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore."  So the cheers for General Honore!

Also here is a link to an article on CNN.com detailing the pet rescues going on in New Orleans since the storm:

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Drool VS Hair
« on: September 09, 2005, 06:27:30 pm »
Because of a discussion in chat, if you only had to deal with ONE BPO bad habit, would it be the drool?  Or the grooming?

I tolerate the shedding slightly better than the drooling.  People you encounter, if they have any sense, expect dog hairs to be left behind, but that big wad of drool slunnnnnnnnnnn nng from stem to stern and hanging from the the ceiling fan blades after a really good head shake... well that's something else entirely.  the only thing endearing about it is when he slides up to lean on a really persnikety neighbor of mine.  Always, and I mean ALWAYS, manages to leave a slime trail somewhere just out of her sight.  I should be a ashamed and shouldn't laugh, but....  ;D

By this time tomorrow I should be at Marguarittavil le(sp) sipping PinaColoda's at Myrtle Beach. I feel a little guilty looking forward to this with all the tragedy we've seen the past 2 weeks but that is part of the reason I need this vacation so bad!! So I shall have a drink in all of your honors, just let me know your favorite and I'll try it!!! :D

Gotta go with a Boat Drink - Jimmy Buffett wrote a song about 'em - Dum and tonic with lime is all it is... if I'm somewhere where they can make 'em a Mojito is always great.  But if you are feeling lazy, just open a nice bottle of wine and wander down to the beach with a glass... nothing's better.  Enjoy your rest!

No way I'd ever leave without mine either.  People harrass me about my permanent and consistent refusal to even consider evacuation, but honestly, where would I go with a combined 280 and growing lbs of dogs and 2 cats with bad attitudes.  Then there are there the chickens... lol  my family and friends love me, but I'm not sure evem I'd open the door to me and the menagerie - lol.

As far as I can tell from the local (Mobile) and national news, pet rescues are going strong all along the coast!  They had segments on NBC nightly news and WPMI (local) news about pets being rescued in New Orleans. From a personal perspective, a friend (and the person I lease my horse from) went to Waveland, MS with her group to rescue abandoned pets with the blessing of local authorities.  Hopefully they are going to make a return trip on the weekend when I can join in.  So, I would not put a lot of faith in hearing that Ray Nagin has blocked these rescues. If nothing else, it seems to becoming the bright spot in the news of all of this and the pictures in the segments are heart-rending.

It's awsome meeting other 'big paws' people.  That's one of the (many) reasons I enjoy things like the petpalooza.  When I walk the boys it's almost like being in a parade and some people look with pity and fear mixed, like you are either just completely loony or somewhat dangerous for having 'mini horses' (you have a small house in **town**???!?!??!?)  lol.  So it's great when I can take them someplace where I don't get so much of that lol.
Of course Feste just hates getting out in public and being fawned over and meeting new doggie friends of all sizes.  Thanks for turning me onto this site, I have been enjoying it greatly!
I haven't been able to be on much with everything of late, but I can see there's a great deal of info and cameraderie on this site.

Hey there, Lisa... great to know we have neighbors in the area.  Hope things are o.k. over there now.  I haven't been able to get over that direction.  Probably wouldn't put Feste in the show... we are still working on his training.  For such sweet compliant dogs, Danes can be a pain to train when their stubborn streak comes up.  He's coming along... surely, but slowly... LOL.  But I look forward to seeing your beauties there!

Yes, thankfully things are doing better now.  Have the power back on (the boys are much happier now that they have their a/c back!).  We got hit fairly hard, but are gratefully much better off than our neighbors to the west.
Well back to work cleaning up.  (me working and the boys supervising   ;D ).

Hey all... a few more pics... a couple are from when he 1st came home with me.  The ones in the water are off the front beach of Dauphin Island - will be a while before we can get back there!  The Black and White Great labra-Dane is Chance, his fpster-brother, whom I'm fostering for the rescue that I found Feste at.  I'm going to try to go out to the stables with him this afternoon, so may have some shots from there later...

Hey All  -   Sorry we've been out of touch for the last week,   We're in Mobile and have been dealing with our bit from Hurricane Katrina here and haven't been able to get back to the site.
Thanks to all for the compliments to my boy.  He does have some big paws, but he is filling some big paws too, and doing well at it.  Although I think his coloring is striking and handsome, it's his personality that wins everyone over!
He's an amazing creature, I always find it insane to see the great animals that end up in rescues.  I take him to a lot of functions that welcome dogs and he is always a hit, wherever he goes.  We went to the Petpalooza here about 2 weeks ago and had the best time.  He just soaks up the attention!

BTW - He has a tatoo in his right ear - 'M S' - Anyone know of a breeder of Brindles who uses this tatoo?
