Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: ARGGGHHHH I hate old senile people!

Oh my, I really feel for you.  I really, really do.  She sounds exactly like my grandmother... even down to the picking on your dad part. My grandmother's favorite put down is saying I'm just like my dad...which makes me proud, as he was the kindest and most intelligent person I've known. From your post, I'm guessing that her behavior isn't necessarily age related but maybe is something that has become worse as she's gotten older?  i.e. It sounds like this is more than an elderly woman having a bad day.

The only advice I have is to get distance from her as soon as you can. If you can't do that,  stop the verbal abuse right now.  If she is hassling you, tell her respectfully that you will not discuss (insert topic) with her.  And stick to that.  People have a way of provoking discussion.  Don't let her do that to you. We don't have to answer questions simply because we are asked them.

If she is verbally abusive when you are with her, leave the house for a bit.  That behavior is unhealthy to be around, and you need to make it stop now. She absolutely will not change, but you can change how you react to her.

My positive thoughts are with you.  I hope you feel better and can find some way to deal with your grandmother that is healthy for you.

Weeeelll.....N ot sure you're gonna get a firestorm, John.  But I'd like to post a more moderate view of Peta.  :D

The fact that these people are lunatics and have hurt the credibility of animal rights groups...I 100 percent agree!

On the other hand, Peta brings to light the horrors that the more moderate groups don't. Things the mainstream press ignores.  I am torn between loathing their methods and  thinking that someone needs to step up and expose what goes on. If these people get a little nuts in the process...well, I can only say that what goes on is enough to drive a person there.

I recently followed a link which ended up putting me on the PETA site. I saw a video there on the fur trade, and I will never be the same. Ever.  (This is not the gentler Martha Stewart version.) Yes, I knew fur was bad, but my god, I hope never in my life to see such suffering again.  There is bad, and then there are things so horrendous it defies words and makes me ashamed to be human.

I then followed another link from Peta to read about Iams and their funding of animal testing. They presented a reasonable discussion, I thought...not the usual insanity.  You can read about it here:

http://www.iamscruelty.com/iams-feat-wsu.asp

My point is, they serve a purpose. They are tireless in their fight for animal welfare, and they keep the public informed....th ose who will still listen to them.  Yes I wish they were less insane about it.  But someone needs to step up and say enough.

Your guy sounds like a real sweetie!  When things are going bad, it's so great to have someone who is there for ya.

Grats on your upcoming graduation!  I'm so happy for you! (And a tad jealous hehe. We are working on the finances right now for me to go back.) I'll be sending lots of positive thoughts your way that all the troubles get straightened out quickly!

You forgot the old standard curling iron burn lie...lol!

That darn curling iron got me out what could have been many nights of being grounded!!!

Vitamin K is good to reduce bruising (as well as nasty undereye cirles).  It pulls the blood away from the surface of the skin.  You can get it in oral capsuls or an ointment at GNC, or any health food store.

ROFL!! One time I had a gen-u-ine curling iron burn.  No kidding it was.  (Hey, it was the 80's!) Someone asked what had happened, and I said a curling iron.  I  got the "yeah, uh-huh"  look hehe.

Hi Joey,

I'm so happy that you and Molly have found each other and that you've joined us on BPO!  I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear Roswell, but I know that it sometimes helps the healing process when another special soul comes into our lives.  I look forward to seeing more pictures of your baby!!

Oh, what a sweet, happy face Zima has! She is adorable and the slipper look made me chuckle!

I'm so glad your neighbor is taking better care of his puppy.  He is probably the type of jerk who has to bluster before he thinks.  Then later on, he probably thought about what you said and took it to heart.

I'm glad it's all worked out well.

Angelsmom-Cabeza says, "Aw, shucks. Thank ya, ma'am." hehehehe!

Coonie...wooh! Let me tell you my mail man story! hahahaha! One day, my daughter and her friend were in the front yard with Cabeza. They were brushing him. The mail man walks up and says, "You little a$$holes, put that dog away!" The kids, who at this time are like, 10, say, "What? He's nice, he won't hurt you." And the mail man starts YELLING AND CURSING (more) at these two ten year olds! So, Cabeza starts barking at him! The mailman HITS AND KICKS Cabeza and tells the kids that they are two SOB's and runs away.  The kids and Cabeza come in, and as they are telling us the story, ANIMAL CONTROL shows up about a BIG VICIOUS BLACK DOG. I'm like, 'HELLO?! THis mailman calls my TEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER an a$$hole, and yells at her, and my dog barks and the DOG is vicious?" I think that the mailman needs to be investigated! I couldn't believe it!

Oh wow, I am just afraid of what I would do if someone came into my yard and abused children and my dog!!  I'm furious and my stomach hurts just thinking of it!

Once a woman kicked at Emma as we were walking on a sidewalk.  Emma was leashed, and she looked over at the woman (just curious, not mean).  I did a quick correct, but then as we were almost past, the woman kicked out at Miss Em.  Well, I turned around and gave her h*ll.  She threatened to call the police on my dog, and I whipped out my cel phone and said, let's do that right now, because you are NOT going to be kicking dogs who haven't done a thing to you.  She shut up, and we moved on, but good grief it was an ugly situation.

I truly feel for Kuvaszman, his children, and poor Jasmine.  I can only imagine the pain that family must be feeling right now.

I am so happy to hear that Jasmine will be getting another chance.  Since reading this post and others, I've read up on the breed a bit.  What amazing dogs!

Thank you so much Deena and all those who reached out to this family.  Thank you for keeping us posted on what happens!

Your puppy sounds very normal to me. I can hardly wait to see the pics!

With giant breed dogs, it's crucial to feed them carefully for the first 2 years since their bones can literally grow faster than their bodies can handle.  Eagle Pack Natural is a great food for giant breed puppies.  Here is a good article to read on the topic.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: pilates + angus = pain
« on: September 25, 2005, 08:48:48 am »

Okay then, let me rephrase since some want to refute the notion that dogs dont' understand sometimes.

Dog's don't understand someone who is the leader SOMETIMES, and not others.

If you are not the day to day LEADER FIGURE, if your dog decides to behave like a butthead and you step up to the plate to THEN be the leader, your dog is not likely to recognize that fact.

Particularly some dogs who may be "social climbers" within the pack structure.

If you want the respect of your dog in highly charged situations, you must be the clear leader all the time, not SOME of the time, and especially not just when the doo doo is deep.

;)

Oh, I absolutely agree with you on that.  I know that dogs need (and want) consistency from their owners.  With difficult dogs we can't sometimes want to be in charge and othertimes give in.

Ya know, it's kind of like with kids.  If you ever notice, the ones who are bouncing off the walls, hanging off the guide ropes in line at the post office are the ones whose moms are  saying,  "no no no no hehe aw come on" without ever following through.  :D

Anyhow, I didn't mean to sound like I was refuting the idea of consistency with dogs.  When pndlake mentioned how much dogs are capable of understanding, even understanding "sometimes,"  it reminded me of a story.  :)

I do believe that dogs can understand the notion of "sometimes."  Here's a story about my first dog, a highly alpha rottie.  As a disclaimer, nowadays I would never, ever play tug of war with a dog struggling to be alpha. But back then, I was new at the whole thing and pretty clueless lol.

I had managed to work through my pup's growling and snapping at people and he was a fairly well behaved fellow.  He knew he was never allowed to growl at people, but he understood he could growl when playing with his tug toys during play time.  Well, this dog was still h*ll around the house, and would get in trouble from time to time for other stuff...and this made him want to growl at me.  Whenever he was in trouble, he would run around the house frantically looking for a tug toy.  He would bring it back, sit right in front of me, and growl his head off with the toy hanging out of his mouth!  I would just calmly take the toy and wait.  The growling would stop instantly, and he would run around to get another toy, come back, and growl again!  He really seemed to understand that sometimes he could growl and other times not.
