Anything Non-Dog Related / Sam is back from the doctor
« on: February 08, 2007, 03:55:42 pm »
Sam went in this morning and was sedated so the doctor could do a thorough exam of his eyes.  After the procedure the doctor informed me that Sam's condition is worse than we originally thought.  Sam's left retina is detached with an active hemorraghe (sp) which prevented the doctor from even seeing the back of the eye to find out what his field of vision is.  His right retina is also detached and he has many small cysts in the center of his eye.  His vision is very minimal at this point, and it is unsure if he has any vision on the left side.
He has been referred to another specialist tomorrow and will be having surgery next week, probably monday to either reattach the retina or remove parts of it, whatever they deem necessary at that time.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Just keep us in your thoughts
« on: February 06, 2007, 08:10:49 pm »
I had kept this to myself recently because there has been so much sad news, I just didn't want to give more.  But I really would love everyones positive thoughts and prayers for my son, Sam.

Friday, I took Sam to an Opthamologist to be evaluated for Strabismus (crossed eyes) and checked for Juvenile Retinoschisis.  The JR is a genetic disease that runs in my family, females carry the gene and can pass it on to male offspring.  It causes retinal detachment and, in some cases, blindness.  I found out that Sam does have JR, and that the retina in his left eye is already detached.  Tomorrow he is going to see a retina specialist and will probably be scheduled for surgery to attempt to reattach the retina.

I know this is long and winded.  Please keep my little one in your thoughts.

Great Dane Discussions / Tonka is back from the vet
« on: February 06, 2007, 06:16:32 pm »
I needed to do it for my own peace of mind, because Tonka was starting to act lethargic and had just thrown up for the 6th time.
She checked him out, he is not dehydrated, just seems to have a really upset stomach.  She gave him two shots to settle his stomach, 3 prescriptions and some bland food to feed him for the next couple of days.  She said to feed him tomorrow if he hasn't vomited again, if he does he will need to come back.

But already he seems to be feeling better.

Great Dane Discussions / Am I overreacting, please tell me I am!
« on: February 06, 2007, 12:15:21 pm »
Okay, I am freaking myself out, do you think it is bloat?

So, Tonka has thrown up twice in the last hour. He is acting normal, still playing with Zoe, following me around and then going to sleep in whatever room I stop in.  But now I noticed, outside, that he was lunging a couple of times.  He ate normal this morning and has "cleaned up" his vomit.
What should I do?  Withhold water/food?

I am so tired of people telling me that I need to feed my dog!  I get so irritated with hearing how skinny he is or people wondering if he is supposed to be that thin.  I have had the cops come to my house twice in the last year, once about my skinny pit bull and another just random complaint about my neglected dog!  Last time Tonka was weighed he was just at 140 lbs!  What do people expect?  He looks healthy to me, yes he is slender.....ug h!  Sorry for the rant, it is so irritating!

We have moved into our new house and HALLELUJIAH, I have high speed internet again!!!
Yesterday my sister, Brenda, called me and asked if I knew anyone who wanted a dog.  I told her I did not, so she proceed with the story of a neighbor who got a dog for Christmas and then decided they did not want her and were going to take her to the shelter.  Brenda asked if she could ask around and help them find a good home for her.  They said no, that they were taking her that day, they did not want to keep her for even one more day.  Brenda decided to keep the dog until she could find a new home for her.  Well, she brought over this sweet little poodle-maltese mix and my heart melted, and here I sit with her in my lap.  She is a year old, and she has the cutest underbite.  Her name was Tootsie, but I have renamed her Zoe.
Once I unpack my camera I will get some pics up.  She and Tonka are an odd couple, but are getting along very well.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I have been MIA
« on: November 13, 2006, 06:11:38 am »
Hey all!  I have missed everyone and all the furbabies!

I am back in Texas and the kids, Tonka and I are doing great.  Tonka is loving country living and has made fast friends with the horses (I believe they think he is one of them).

I have invited one of my best friends to join and she is making her pawprint this evening (she is planning anyways).  She just got a OEM and when she introduces herself I will let her fill you in on all the details.

I will be slowly resuming my BPO addict schedule and get back in the groove.

What's been going on everyone?  Any updates or happenings that I have missed?
I have missed you all, can't wait to see how everyones pups are doing.

I have a Golden retriever & I was buying a large bag of Purina at
Wal-Mart and was in line to check out.

A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. On impulse, I told her that no,
I was starting The Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't
because I'd ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50
pounds
before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of
most of
my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that
it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply
eat
one or two every time you feel hungry & that the food is nutritionally
complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now
enthralled with my story, particularly a guy who was behind her.
Horrified, she asked if I'd ended up in the hospital in that condition
because I had been poisoned.  I told her no; it was because I'd been
sitting in the street licking my balls and a car hit me.

I thought one guy was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so
hard as he staggered out the door

I crossposted the link about the reason pets are abandoned and the picture of the doghouse made of collars from euthanized dogs.  (it is a parenting board not a pet board, but there is a pet forum)
There have been a couple of responses which have included people telling stories about giving away their dogs, and that its okay as long as you give them to a nice home. :-\  One woman said she gave away her dog to a rescue because it would pee whenever they had company and she couldn't handle it.  Another woman said that she had a dog for 10 years (10 years!!!) that she gave away because they moved into a new house with a smaller backyard and she gave him away because he was so unhappy with it (it was a beagle)?!?!  (how do you give a dog away, especially one you have had for that long?!)
One of these women also went on to say that she planned on breeding her dog in the next year and she would make sure that she gave them to good homes, but some of them would probably be given to new owners at some point because it happens! ???
Sorry for the vent!

Former 'Survivor' Winner Shoots Puppy
By KATE BRUMBACK
AP
ATLANTA (July 5) - A winner of the popular reality show "Survivor" was arrested Wednesday after allegedly shooting a puppy with an arrow.

Brian Heidik, 38, is charged with battery and cruelty to animals. After a pretrial hearing Wednesday morning in Douglas County Magistrate Court, he was released on bond.

During the bond hearing, Heidik told a judge he thought the dog was a coyote that has been harassing his pets, WSB-TV reported on its Web site.

Douglas County Chief Deputy Stan Copeland said it was a puppy.

"At about 3 a.m., his wife called to report that he was outside and that he had shot a puppy that was on his property with an arrow and planned to shoot another one," Copeland said.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, Heidik fled in his car but was quickly caught and taken back to the home where the incident occurred.

Heidik's wife, Charmaine, and 5-year-old son were present at the home at the time of the incident, Copeland said.

Copeland said there was evidence in the home to support a charge of battery for family violence. Because the case is pending, he could not elaborate on the nature of the evidence.

Both the wounded puppy and the second puppy were turned over to animal control officials to determine who they belonged to.

Heidik did not immediately respond to a a message from The Associated Press left on an answering machine at one of two phones listed in his name in Douglasville. There was no answer Wednesday afternoon at the second number. Douglasville is 21 miles west of Atlanta.

Heidik won the $1 million prize as the sole survivor of "Survivor: Thailand," the fifth edition of the CBS adventure game show broadcast from September to December 2002.

He is a former North Carolina State football player, used-car salesman and part-time actor. Heidik's TV acting credits include appearances on "Baywatch Nights," "Doogie Howser, M.D." and the soap opera "Days of Our Lives."

His film credits under the name David Roth include "Chick Street Fighter," and "Virgins of Sherwood Forest," according to IMDB.com, the internet movie database.

Great Dane Discussions / fading
« on: July 20, 2006, 12:29:14 pm »
During the day my daughter is in and out of the backyard playing in the sprinkler or digging for doodle bugs and Tonka is in and out with her all day.  I have been noticing that his fur, only on his back, is fading.  I have tried sunscreen and it is not helping.  The fur on his head and legs is beautiful and shiny black and now his back is dull faded.   :-\  Darn this desert sun!!
Is there anything I can do to protect it aside from limiting his outside time to potty breaks?  And is there any suggestions for restoring his coat back to shiny and beautiful? ???

We are getting ready in the next month to move back to TEXAS!  I am sooo excited!  My husband is getting out af the Air Force after almost 9 years and transitioning to civilian life.  He is considering continuing in the reserves, we will see, it all depends on what awaits us in the real world.
The downside, I must become concerned with fleas, ticks and heartworms...o ne of the luxuries of Vegas pet ownership is gone!
