Great Dane Discussions / Leave me alone!! (A rant)
« on: June 19, 2006, 12:14:41 am »
This evening I was nursing Sam and I see a shadow pass by my blinds in the front yard, I prepare myself and wait for a few seconds, expecting a knock on the door...nothing, so I go about my business.  A few minutes later the doorbell rings and when I answer it there are two SPs (base police) at my door.  They inform me that they are responding to a complaint of a neglected and abused dog. ???  I am P1SSED!!  I tell them that my dog is WELL taken care of and there is no need to worry.  They say the caller informed them that there is no food or water left out for the dog.  I tell them that Tonka is an indoor dog, but if they look in my yard they will see a 5 gallon water jug upside down in a bowl and that is his outside water, as far as his food he is fed twice a day NOT free fed and NOT outside.  They don't really know what to do or how to evaluate the situation (as they are NOT qualified for the task they have been given) and say that maybe he is skinny.  I inform them that Tonka was recently sick and hospitalized for, among other reasons, not eating for 8 days.  He is now within a perfectly normal, healthy weight range but that Great Danes can tend to be on the slender side.  I show them the vet receipts and ask them "do you really think I would pay $1100 dollars for a dog I was neglecting?".  I then let them know that I would appreciate any further complaints being directed to animal control so that the responders would at least be knowledgeable of animals, or if necessary I would take Tonka to a vet and have his health cleared and bring written documentation of it.  They said not necessary and went on their way.

I am sooooo mad!!  What do I have to do??  Get a bullhorn and walk outside and announce "I AM FEEDING MY DOG" every morning and evening, and then later "I AM REFILLING MY DOG'S WATER", or "I AM PLAYING WITH MY DOG" ::).  This is the second time this has happened!!  (When Tonka was about 6 months old the cops came out to investigate my skinny PIT BULL ???).  AAARGH, I do everything for Tonka and he is well taken care of!!  I want to call the cop shop tomorrow and complain, but I don't know what to say.....
I just hate nosy neighbors!! :-\

Great Dane Discussions / unbreakable stuffies??
« on: June 10, 2006, 07:47:24 am »
Tonka LOVES his stuffies...I mean LOOOOOVES them.  Problem is, that they live for like 2 minutes and he has them killed and gutted all over my living room, and I have to clean it up.
Anyone have any suggestions for stuffy-like toys that are more durable?  I don't want to give him these stuffies anymore..partl y because its messy, and partly because I am worried he will eat the stuffing.

Great Dane Discussions / TONKA IS HOME!!
« on: June 05, 2006, 06:18:26 pm »
I just brought Tonka home from the vet!  He is back to his old, goofy self and he started eating again yesterday, so he was cleared to come home!  He is pretty skinny after not eating for 8 days but it looks as though he is getting his old apetite back.
The techs at the clinic were all pretty sad to see him go, seems they all became pretty attached to him.  When I got there to pick him up he was the Tonka I have been missing...jump ing around and knocking things over...he was soooo excited.

Thank you all for your supportive messages and thoughts and all of your prayers.  Tonka is better and he is home!

Great Dane Discussions / really getting worried
« on: June 02, 2006, 12:45:44 pm »
I just spoke with the vet who said that Tonka is still vomiting and has bloody diarhea.  They have taken a fecal sample to culture and those results may take a couple of days.  He is still not eating (entering day 7 of no food) and is not responding well enough to the antibiotics.  The vet says they are going to change him to Zithromax and see if that will make a difference since it is much stronger than what they have been using.
I am just so worried that this is beginning to look really bleak for Tonka.  7 days without food?!?!  The vet says they have been giving him meds for nausea but once it wears off he vomits.  This new med, Zithromax, is an oral med and the vet says that they need to make sure he can hold it down since it is pretty expensive.
I just wonder, how much (if any) is the fact that he has not eaten in a week possibly contributing to his diminishing health.
I am just so scared that there is no light at the end of Tonkas tunnel! :'(

Great Dane Discussions / Tonka update
« on: May 30, 2006, 01:02:16 pm »
I took Tonka back to the vet this morning because there has been very little improvement in his behavior and zero improvement in his condition.
The vet believes the gastritis has become pancreatitis and has hospitalized him for test, fluids, and antibiotics.  Keep those fingers and paws crossed that we have the right diagnosis and that Tonka is on his way back to health.
Thanks for all of your support and prayers!

Great Dane Discussions / Tonka is sick
« on: May 28, 2006, 01:04:21 am »
My poor Tonka is really sick! :-[  He started thowing up this morning and isn't eating.  I have even tried giving him turkey and he won't take it!! :-\
I took him to the vet earlier this afternoon and the vet says it is probably due to the food switch (nutro to canidae)and that some dogs are more sensitive than others.  He gave me a prescription for Amoxcyllin (sp)and said he should start feeling better in 2-3 days.
I just don't know what to do!!  He is drinking water, but won't eat...he already is starting to look emaciated just after one day of no eating and throwing up.  He is also very lethargic and gets up only to go out and use the bathroom.
Any suggestions on how to get him to eat or anything else I can do?  I am really worried! :-\

Rottweiler Discussions / Rottie in VA needs a home (crosspost)
« on: May 24, 2006, 06:31:18 pm »
This was sent to me by a friend--

-----------------------------
OK so all of you know, if you know me at all, that i love dogs more than anything. yesterday on the way back to nyc from charlotte, evan spotted a dog lying on the side of the road in Dinwiddie, VA, outside of Richmond. i made him throw it in reverse and go back. thats where we met ralph! the most amazing rotti i have ever laid my eyes on! except he was completely emaciated and covered in cuts and infections and ticks! no tags! nothing!

he let us leash him, not even a growl! he just starred at us like he had just won the lottery! we gave him tons of food and and checked him out for broken bones. all he wanted to do was snug! he leaned into me and put his head on my leg and i thought i was going to die. when we fed him he'd let us pet him, no growling. he is not scary!! people are so freaked out by rotts and its stupid! this dog is a freaking puff monster!!

the problem is...my dogs were in our car and there was no way to get him in there too. so we were forced to leave him with animal control. LUCKILY!!! Dinwiddie VA's animal control person is amazing! she gave me all the info so i could keep in touch and has agreed to help me do whatever to help find him a home!

she sent me this today!

-----------------------

Hi Lesli,

Ralph? Is doing good. I have cleaned the wounds behind his ears, lots of infection, and put medication on them. He is about the sweetest dog I have ever seen! If you find an adopter or rescue, we would have to neuter him before leaving Dinwiddie County. No problem there. He is located at Dinwiddie Animal Shelter which is beside the landfill on Wheelers Pond Rd. I will work with you any way possible to get this guy a good home. BTWyou ought to hear him howl! WOW! Hes loud and sounds like a hound!

Keep in touch and thank you so much for the help last night!

Mary
------------------------

ok so heres the deal! he needs a freaking home! he needs to snug and cuddle and eat tons of food and lay on a couch for the rest of his life! so if you or anyone you know would like to adopt him! LETS DO THIS! it doesnt matter where you live! we can work that out! if i have to, ill go get him myself and deliver him to you! he is seriously worth this! if i didnt have 2 dogs already in brooklyn, id take him myself, but fortunately i have the moods and rhoods!

so this is ralph! im calling him that cause he reminds me of my dad. broken down, beaten up, barely holding on and still maintains the most amazing demeanor ever with the sweetest face to boot!

so this is how you'd go about getting him...
