Games & Jokes / Joke...NDR
« on: September 26, 2005, 12:34:28 pm »
I got this emailed to me and after I picked myself up off the floor I wanted to pass it on.

 A 6 year-old and 4 year-old are upstairs in their bedroom.
"You know what?" says the 6 year-old. "I think it's about time we
  started cussing."
The 4 Year-olds nods his head in approval.
The 6 year-old continues, "When we go downstairs for breakfast, I'm
gonna say something with 'h*ll' and you say something with '@ss.'" The 4
  year-old agrees with enthusiasm.
When their mother walks into the kitchen and asks the 6 year-old what he
wants for breakfast, he replies, "Aw h*ll Mom, I guess I'll have some
Cheerios." WHACK! He flies out of his chair, tumbles across the kitchen
floor, gets up,and runs upstairs crying his eyes out with his mother in
hot pursuit, slapping his rear with every step. She locks him in his
room and shouts,"You can stay in there until I let you out."
She then comes back downstairs, looks at the 4 year-old and asks with a
stern voice, "An what do YOU want for breakfast, young man?" "I don't
know," he blubbers, "but you can bet your fat @ss it won't be Cheerios."

Great Dane Discussions / Pain control?
« on: September 22, 2005, 08:01:42 am »
Is there anything I can give Tonka to help ease the discomfort/swelling in his leg from the IVs??  He can barely walk and he cries when he moves it  :'(.  I have given dogs benadryl in the past for snake bites and such but this is a different hurt and I am not sure what to give him or if I should just let it pass.

Great Dane Discussions / Pray for my baby Tonka!
« on: September 21, 2005, 06:26:57 pm »
This morning I woke up and fed my dogs as usual.  Tonka sifted his around a little ate about half of it and then went on his business, so I gave him a few minutes and then took the food away.  He has seemed somewhat normal all day, playing with the other dogs and then taking a nap on the couch, until a couple of hours ago when I tried to feed him again and he wanted nothing to do with it (usually he acts like he will never eat again!).  I then started noticing he seemed a bit lethargic and even when I would sit on the floor to play he would only come over to plop into my lap.  I decided not to take any chances and even though I might be overreacting I wanted to be safe rather than sorry, so I called the vet and took him in.  At this point he has to stay the night due to a temperature (103 deg) and for tests and IV meds.  I am sooo worried about my little boy and I just want everyone to keep us in your thoughts.  I will hopefully have some good news tomorrow and be able to bring Tonka home.  :'(

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Question about my little paws
« on: September 21, 2005, 12:13:28 am »
I have a Jack Russell Terrier and he has a bit of an agression problem.  It has usually been a food agression issue, but lately (especially since bringing home Tonka) he seems a little territorial as well.  They play and they have a good time and then at certain points he just starts growling and seems grumpy.  Today was really bad, I went to the store and I bought all the boys some treats.  Not thinking it would really matter too much, I got Bogart and Remmy chicken sticks (rawhide) and I bought a large bone for Tonka.  This really seemed to tick Remmy off and when Tonka walked away from the bone (sidetracked)...Remmy took posession and was growling and showing his teeth.  I removed it and later gave it back to Tonka and this time Tonka just took the bone near Remmy and it insighted his aggression, and even though he did not have the bone he was still acting aggressive over just being near it.  This time he was growling and showing his teeth and then he began to tremble.  I finally took the bone away completely and just removed it.  I could google dog aggression and try for months different techniques to remedy this, BUT I would rather just know if anyone else  has dealt with this sort of thing and found any thing that worked.  It is 90% over food, I don't know if we are just starting to have territorial battles over my lap or why even his food agression seems to have intensified???

I am working on teaching Tonka how to walk on a leash...so far it consists of me dragging him.  Someone told me about a "pinch" collar, does anyone know how these work and if this is the right training aid for teaching him leash ettiquete (sp?).  Thank you.

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Hello (new Great Dane owner)
« on: September 17, 2005, 11:42:59 pm »
My name is Stacey and I live in Las Vegas, NV.  I am a new owner of a beautiful, clumsy Great Dane puppy, Tonka.  I also have a toy poodle, Bogart and a Jack Russell Terrier, Remington.  I am going to pick all of your brains for advice and help and want you all to be prepared to be completely annoyed by stories and pictures of my baby Tonka (and I might even throw the other boys names out there from time to time....even though they have much smaller paws lol).  Looking forward to getting to know all of  you and your dogs.  Thanks Ang for telling me about this site!
