Great Pyrenees Discussions / Binky locked me out in the snow!!!!!
« on: December 08, 2005, 01:56:18 pm »
So, I decided to be nice to my husband and shovel the driveway-it is snowing like crazy here!  I shoveled the driveway, the deck and a path in the backyard for Chicklet (she's so small that she can't walk in the snow).  It took me about half an hour.
I go to open the door and-it's LOCKED!  The only way our door locks is a deadbolt on the inside, which obviously has to be locked from the inside or with a key outside.  There's Binky, standing with her foot on the bolt!  Of course, I couldn't get her to turn it back.
Another of course-none of my neighbors are at home.  So I had to walk to the library to use their phone.  Now let me tell you, I looked like a Yetti!  I was completely covered in snow, I was wearing an old jacket that was also coated with dog hair (and I mean major hair-I found two of them sleeping on it last night and Binky is shedding like it's going out of style).  The librarians were less than impressed and I think they thought I was really insane when I told them the dog had locked me out!
I managed to get in touch with my mother-in-law to let me in...an hour later!  AHHHHH.  Needless to say, I will carry a key with me at all times now!  Being locked out was not something I considered before getting a big dog!  Beware!  This is Binky's first real snow and she is loving it- at least someone enjoys it!

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Can she escape?
« on: December 04, 2005, 04:48:41 pm »
Hi everyone, I'm looking for more advice and since you guys were so great with my last question, here goes!
I
am concerned about Binky getting out of our yard.  We have 6' high wooden fence on three sides of the yard.  The other side of the yard is fenced by our neighbor's 4' tall chain link fence.  Our back door leads to our deck which has a 3' tall gate leading to steps down to the driveway.  Binky's breeder thought that our fencing would be sufficient until Binky was full grown.  However, I keep reading about Pyrs climbing and I am nervous about the neighbor's fence.  She has only recently gained the muscle to jump onto our couch (it was funny to watch her pull herself up) and doesn't seem to have an inclination to escape, but she is still a baby.

As you can see from the pics, she can stand over the gate, but I don't know if she would try to jump it as she would have trouble landing on the stairs.  I know we will eventually have to extend it somehow? but not sure if it needs to be done now.  What do you think?  What kind of fences do the rest of you Pyr people have?  Any escapees?  Note the giant hole and the mud covering what used to be my husband's pride and joy (the lawn)!  Thanks in advance.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Barking-Discipline?
« on: December 02, 2005, 08:13:22 pm »
Hi Everyone,

I haven't had time to look at this site in a long time!  It's good to catch up on everything! So many cute pictures!  Also, I would like some advice about Binky.

Binky is a 5 month old Pyr.  She is finally housetrained!  It was amazing- I taught her to ring a bell when she wanted to go out, and as soon as she learned that (about 4 days) she stopped having accidents!  Anyway, the problem is that she now rings the bell to go out literally every ten minutes, especially after dark.  I know she just wants to go in the yard and bark, but I don't want to deny her going out after I taught her to use the bell for that purpose.  That's the first problem.

The second is the barking.  Of course, I did my research before we got Binky and I knew she would bark.  I don't really mind the barking, but I don't want to let it go unchecked- our neighbors like all our dogs, but everyone has a limit!  I just don't know if I should be reprimanding Binky for doing something that she is bred to do (bark to deter predators).  What do you think?  Should I tell her to stop barking like I do the other dogs?  Any advice appreciated.  Thank you.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Housetraining BITES!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Been soo busy last few weeks so haven't been around.  It's good to catch up on all the dog news!
Anyway, Binky is badly regressing in the "potty outside" department.  It is so frustrating.  I have been training her to ring a bell by the door when she needs to go out and she caught on really quickly-so I thought!  After four full days without an accident, I let her have some more freedom to roam the house.  My mistake- she is peeing and pooing everywhere now!  Until this week she had only pooed in the house once.  Obviously, I have been keeping a closer eye on her, but now it seems like the second I'm not looking, she pees!  Today she managed to pee twice, with me in the room, after going out.  I don't know how she can possibly have that much liquid in her body!  Anyone know why she would suddenly have such a hard time controlling herself?  She is almost 4 months old.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Is this animal cruelty?
« on: September 26, 2005, 01:06:38 am »
Hi Everyone,

This weekend I heard two stories about crated dogs and am wondering if this is considered animal cruelty and if any of you all have any suggestions on what I might do.
A friend of mine lives with a girl who has a 2 year old dog.  The dog is not trained in any way.  The dog is left crated from 7am-6pm without water, food, toys or even a blanket.  At 6pm, the roomate gets home, takes the dog out, then LEAVES again for her second job, after which she often goes out and stays out until 6am!!!!  Obviously, my friend is trying to take better care of the dog-taking her for walks, playing, etc, but she works long hours too and doesn't really want a dog.
My cousin also told me a similar story about her ex-roomate!  Why do these people have dogs?????  What should my firend do?  I don't know if this is a case for animal welfare, but even if it is, my friend does not want to call and jeopardize her already strained friendship with her roomate.  Any ideas?  I am so upset about these poor animals and I can't help but think that this is a commanly practiced, accepted way of cruelty.  Since everyone on this site so obviously loves their dogs, I doubt anyone here wouyld do this, but just in case, please reconsider dog ownership if this is how you think an animal can be treated.

Hi Everyone,
This is a great site!  We got our first Pyr puppy last month.  Her name is Binky and she's now three months old and GROWING by the hour.
We also have a giant Papillon, McDougal (25lbs), a runt Papillon, Chicklet (4lbs) and two cats, Sigfried and Spooky.  They are not sure how to take the newest addition to the family, but are adjusting.  I will have to figure out how to put a picture up-she's so cute!
