Happy New Year everyone!  Just some pictures of the dogs and Leo.  His favorite words are "dog" and "kitty cat"- wonder why?!

You're awesome! I don't know why some people are allowed in public!

Awwwwww, they are soooo cute!  I have always wanted ducks but I've heard they're really messy so you'll just have to post a ton of pix so I can live vicariously through you :)  What are their names?

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Jenny bit my daughter :(
« on: November 17, 2008, 02:52:23 pm »

The child hitting the dog with a mini golf club is completely avoidable, children that are old enough to swing a mini club at a dog and hit the dog, are old enough to learn respect for the dog and the fact that hitting the dog with any object is unacceptable.

I agree that what happened with Jenny was just a reaction and really not avoidable- accidents happen.
However, the statement that if a child is old enough to swing a toy, he's old enough to know not to hit is just unfair.  Leo is 15 months old and he is in a phase of throwing things and swininging things around.  He has no idea that his actions can cause injury to others, nor does he understand "hurting" someone or something.  Children really don't have those concepts until a lot later.
Of course I don't let him hit the dogs, but an occasional toy does fall from the highchair onto the dogs' heads.  I am teaching Leo about respecting animals and how to approach other dogs, etc, but there have to be realistic expectations for children- it is not their fault if they get bitten.  I just feel that sometimes people on this board go overboard on behalf of the dogs- yes there are obnoxious kids and parents who are not dog savvy but there are bad dogs out there as well.

Thanks so much guys.  I never thought of a detangler for dogs.  I will definitely try that and get the rake.

We took the four dogs and Leo to the park and fed the ducks yesterday.  I can't believe the weather is still so nice- I hope it lasts but I suspect the really cold weather is on its way!
BTW, I am now using a gentle leader head collar for Sophie at the trainer's recommendation and it has been working really well!  I never could have brought her near the duck pond before or I would have been in it!

Binky's coat is out of control and I don't know what to do!  Does anyone know a site that gives detailed instructions on how to groom a Pyr?  Or have some advice?  I have her professionally groomed a few times a year and brush her with a wire brush and the furminator in between groomings.  However, her fur is suddenly in big clumpy masses all over and I don't know how to fix it.  It is matted but it's more like felted together if that makes sense?  It has never done this before so I don't know if it's from Sophie chewing on her when they play or from the rain or what.  Any ideas- she looks awful and I'm sure it feels bad too.

I would definitely check them out if you feel that you can handle two pups at once. I can certainly deny having puppy fever at the moment as Sophie is going through her terrible teens, but if you are planning to add another anyway, getting a great deal on a high quality pup sounds like a good idea.  I am not sure about losing your bond- we added Sophie to a pack of three dogs, a cat and a six month old baby and I think she bonded with us just fine! Of course, everyone in our families thought we were crazy (and I might agree at times :) ) but it worked out- it just depends on how well you can deal with a hectic household.

Leonberger Pictures / Halloween-Leo the Lion and his Leo

Just a couple pictures of Leo in his costume and the dogs.  The dogs were rather alarmed that he had grown fur and a tail but Leo seemed very happy- I think he might think he's a dog!

Binky is in the "mini" giant club too- she has topped out around 76 lbs which is very small for a Pyr.  I have had a lot of people tell me she's too thin, etc, but she just has a petite build and the vet said she's the perfect weight for her frame.  That said, Clifford may still fill out a bit- Binky didn't pass the 65 lb mark until after she was 2 years old.
