Thanks to you for saving one of our big guys!!  Sounds like he is going to now get the home he deserves!

Unfortunately if the little dog gets hurt then they blame you for your dog biting back or knocking him down or whatever

Breeding Questions & Information / Re: limited registration
« on: July 26, 2009, 12:56:33 pm »
On limited registration you also cannot show in AKC sanctioned conformation shows either. You can do agility, water sports, obedience but no conformation.  He is a registered dog but with limited if you should happen to breed him in the future you will not be able to get AKC registration on the pups.

Yes you definitely need to be more firm and consistent Since he continues to have stare downs and attacks then obviously your NO doesn't really mean NO to him.  Aussies are possessive and nippy as a breed anyways but certainly are manageable.  Before I had Pyrenees I had several aussies and love the breed.  Currently I have 10 Pyrs and although all together I have no fights- not even at meal or treat times.  But in my house NO  absolutely positively means NO  I have been known to dump an entire bucket of water on their head in order to get the point across before  VBG!  Also if just plain water in the spray bottle doesn't seem to make an impression add a little vinegar or lemon juice.  Keep working at it and good luck!  Oh and the puppy is oblivious to Cosby's warnings cause he hasn't learned his doggy manners- it really won't hurt him to be reprimanded by Cosby  Dogs often work things out better than we do!

First off he needs some way to burn off that energy- your definition of enough exercise and the puppy's definition are not in sync here!  Remember a TIRED puppy is a GOOD puppy.  Secondly I am impressed by the manners he already has!  At six months and with a reliable, come, down and sit!  That's pretty impressive for a baby.  As for stealing sox - it is a game- if you don't want him to steal them put them away- he is a puppy and just having fun.  Stealing your food- it is also your responsibility to keep food out of his reach- stealing food is a natural behavior among canines-  Part of his training at such a young age is to 'puppy proof' your house and that includes things like sox shoes food left out etc.  Now for play biting that should not be tolerated and a spray bottle when he does it is a great deterrant - remember though to praise when he doesn't bite as well.  "Telling a dog off" means nothing to a canine- other than periodically for unknown reasons his owner goes off the deep end and rants and raves.  Good for him having a sense of humor about your verbal tirades!

First of all it is OK for the adult to discipline a rude puppy- that is how they learn their doggy manners.  Whenever I have a litter they start spending time with different adults specifically for this training from the time they are about 7 weeks old.  They get rolled, pinned, snapped at and generally terrorized (at least in their minds) when they get out of line- and quickly learn to be more polite around other dogs.  My adults have had some training from me to not be too rough with the babies and no-one ever gets hurt. But there are a lot of hurt puppy feelings in the process- they will survive!

Your aussie is also not having good manners and is establishing his dominance as well.  First off I would get a spray bottle and the dogs would be taught OFF and NO immediately.  The aussie should be reprimanded for his stare downs first- you missed the boat if he springs- dogs give plenty of warning before they pounce and that is where you need to correct at the warning not after the altercation!  You also need to lavishly praise when he is gentle with the puppy or does not attack whereas he used to.  The puppy needs to have lots of distractions as well so he is not always bugging the aussie.  It can certainly work out but you need to set the ground rules.

Poor baby- let us know what the vet says

You need to take a picture!  One thing to try is to set a cookie tin on the edge- when she starts to climb it will fall and make a God-awful racket scares the bejesus out of some dogs

Pretty boy!!

I use Arthrisoothe Gold which I get from KV Vet  It is the horse version and contains all the good stuff like msm etc.  Very concentrated a tablespoon a day contains full dose and it only costs about $70 for the year  Dogs love the taste too

Try just plain ol vaseline- slather it all round her nose and bridge of nose as well  I also would spray their head with skin so soft- another insect repellant that is natural
