Food Discussion & Information / Re: Kibble to raw transition....
« on: August 31, 2006, 03:41:00 am »
Nola has been thriving on prey model raw for several months now.  At first, he yerped every once in a while after his meals.  Also, he will yerp up some undigested bone but I have found that is normal.  Just take it slow and he will get the hang of it.  Slowly introduce new meats such as pork, beef and rabbit so as to not shock his system. Same advice with organ meat - slowly.  Too much organ meat and you will get an explosive butt.  Remember, the larger the pieces you feed, the better.  It is really cool to watch him chomp on 1/2 a turkey.

I read Lonsdale's book Work Wonders: Feed Your Dog Raw Meaty Bones (Paperback)and that was very informative.

I so glad that everything worked out.  Congratulation s.

I hope to see you out in the neighborhood.  We are on the west side on Andersonville and will be hanging out at Charlie's Alehouse patio until the weather changes.

I am on the northside of Chicago (Ravenswood/Andersonville) would love to help but wouldn't be able to make the trip until late September (9/23).  We are moving next weekend and then have family in town - which is perfect when trying to get a household in order.  Would you be able to wait until September 23rd?

We just returned from a long vacation and had left Nola in the care of a petsitter.  The sitter was his former walker so he just adores spending time with the beast (not so much that it is free, mind you).  The sitter arrives right before we leave and stays until we return.  He spends the nights just for our peace of mind.  Nola is on a raw diet so we have to bag all his daily food before we leave.

If you are looking at a sitter, make sure they are bonded and insured.  In our area, sitters average $50/day.

We used to board Nola but there were a couple of incidents and they don't take un-neutered dogs over the age of 8 months.  Everytime we would pick him up, he would have some sort of wound.  He had gashes on his face plus we found out that a pitbull that was being boarded attacked a boxer and caused some serious damage.

Good luck in your search.

Happy birthday, Bear.  She is so cute.  They grow too quickly.

We had a dog walker until a couple months ago and had a great experience.  The reason we stopped was the b/f started working from home a few days a week and realized that when the dog walker came to get Nola (17 months), the dog needed to be woken from a very deep slumber at his scheduled walk time of 3:30 pm.  In my mind, a dog that needs to be woken doesn't need to pee!  So, you may want to reconsider based on your dogs daily activity level. Nola's activity level is so low it is unchartable.  :D :D

If you do decide to hire a walker, make sure they are bonded & insured and really, REALLY check those references.  Your best bet is to get a referral from a friend or co-worker.  Our original walker/sitter turned out to be a psycho, pathelogical liar who worked for herself (found her online with a national dogwalking/sitter organization).  After a nasty experience where we caught her lying about walking the dog, we hired a company which had a number of employees so, in the event the regular guy couldn't make it, a substitute could be sent over.

Good Luck!

Nola was Seabiscuit for about 5 minutes last year.  We made the saddle and put a stuffed monkey as the jockey with reins to his collar.  We had to remove it because it freaked him out so much he was throwing himself against the fridge trying to get it off.  He could have busted all the beer in there (pre-party time) if we let him go any longer :D
