Newfoundland Discussions / Underground fence systems

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with one of these and if so , what brand ,etc? I have a 5 foot chain link fence around my yard but Allie continues to find a way out so I thought I would add one of those to keep her safe ?

Newfoundland Discussions / Allie's still having problems ....
« on: January 25, 2006, 11:37:53 am »
I wrote about problems I was having with Allie last year , about still going potty in her kennel . So I moved her kennel in our room , and she did okay for awhile but still poops all over herself at least 2 times a week ! ( I just finally got my computer running or I would have wrote sooner ) I honestly cannot leave her in the kennel for longer than 3 or 4 hours or there will be a huge mess . I don't feed her after 4 pm , and she doesn't get put to bed until around 11 or 12 at night and by 3 am when my husband gets up for work there's a horrible mess . She doesn't whine or anything to let us know she needs to go . Is it just unreal of me to expect an 8 month old newfie to hold it for that long ? I've had her examined by my vet and everything looks fine , he thinks maybe one of my neighbors is feeding her without my knowing , but now I stay outside with her to make sure that's not happening and she still does it . Please help me as this is getting very old ! It's too cold to be dragging a kennel outside to hose it out so I have to wash it out in my shower ..... and bathe her in it too... yuck !  :-\

Newfoundland Discussions / How does everyone deal with the mess ?
« on: November 07, 2005, 05:42:33 pm »
I was just wondering how everone deals with the "lakes" of water their newfie leaves after drinking ? We only have linoleum and hard wood floors in our house .... We have to wear shoes all the time or our socks get soaked , but the wet floors are getting dangerous as they are super slick . Allie doesn't just get one room wet either , she tracks it thru the entire house . Any ideas ya might have would be appreciated , thankyou !

Weimaraner Discussions & Pictures / Pro's and Con's of Weimaraners ?
« on: October 24, 2005, 06:08:57 am »
Hi there , I am owned by newfies , I've been around weim's when I once managed a kennel at a vet office but have never owned one . Would ya'll please tell me your experiences with them ? A friend is trying to find a new home for their's and I certainly don't want him to end up at the shelter or shot ....(which is what I'm afraid they'll do .....) So I'm just seeing if he'll fit in at my house ... I haven't yet met him cause I know I'll just get all emotional and want to take him home ...LOL Thanks in advance !

When I got my newfie , Allie , who is 5 months on November 1st , I knew she would grow to be a big dog , I didn't expect for her to have problems sitting on our hard wood floors , since her butt always slides out from underneath her and she has to keep backing up with her front paws to keep up with it ! I knew that newfoundlands drool , but I only pictured the kind of "shoelace drool" (from Turner & Hooch) , I didn't expect to have her walk up to me after a drink , get in my lap and then let half a gallon of water pour from her floppy lips ! I knew they are big dogs , but I didn't expect a puppy to be able to chase my cat through the dining room and take out an end table with a vase and two of my chairs ! And I was fully aware of newfies love for water , but I didn't expect her to always have to have her front paws in her water dish while she drank , and when finished , dip her whole head in it too ! And one last thing I didn't expect happened on Friday ...... I didn't know I had to empty the bathtub RIGHT after my kids got out ..... 'cause after I got them dressed and sent them off to play , I noticed Allie wasn't around , I called her and she didn't come .... I started searching the house and she was plopped down in the tub, bubbles all around her .... And when I finally got her to come out , she had soaked up half the water and splashed it thru my house before finally going outside !!!  What a joy she is to have around , and already making lifetime memories !

Hi everyone , I'm new here and have never posted before . I have a four and a half month old newfie who still goes to the bathroom in her kennel . I always thought dogs didn't want to use their kennel as a bathroom because they'd have to lay in it but she sure doesn't mind . So , if I wait until almost 11 or midnight to put her to bed  and then let her out by 4 am she usually has a dry kennel . But I have to make sure not to feed her after 4 in the afternoon or they'll be a huge poopy mess . If I want to sleep in ( is wanting to sleep past 4 am considered sleeping in ? ) I have to make sure to set my alarm or there is a horrible mess . I've had her looked at by my vet and she is healthy . Are my expectations just to high for her age ? All the other dogs I've had made it thru an entire night with no messes in their kennel ..... My girl is the queen of baths as she has to take one every few days ...... And it's too cold here now to give her one outside . I'm afraid she'll clog my bathtub up with all that black hair . LOL Thanks for all your help , in advance . I guess I just need a little encouragement .
