Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Anal Gland health
« on: October 17, 2005, 02:42:35 pm »
My older Dane, who was pts in april of this year needed her gland cleaned out as she got older. Sometimes when you see them scoot their butts for no reason they are trying to empty it themselfs. I had the vet show me how to do it at home, yes it was gross but it saved alot of money and time. plus she would get so uncomfortable when they were full, I felt bad for her. But it was not a once a week kind of thing. Just sometimes they would fill up and not do it again for a long time.

being the worry kind of moms that we are. I have to tell you My first Dane did the same thing, so I ran her to the vet thinking the bad thoughts. He laughed and said she has a small cold give her some benadryl and she will be fine. Post nasel drip is what he called it. Now I don't panic when my other fur babies do that.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Don't flush!!
« on: October 15, 2005, 03:47:11 pm »
OK what do most people do when a fish dies? flush it right? Not thinking I told my son to flush his oscar. WRONG, forgot the thing was 7 or 8 inches long. So it got stuck in the u shape of the toilet. we plunged for days, finially said " you work at home depot, bring home a snake thingy" So he does and on the first try the snake thingy breaks. Now we have to remove the toilet and fish out the fish. Yeesh and I thought I would have a hard time with 7 dogs in the house. NOT.
Isn't life fun with all these surprises?  Blaming myself, kicking my own but for even saying flush it. live and learn. duh.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: add a cat to that list

well I don't know yet. Of course his dogs are fine with it. And I know my daughters 2 pits are fine with it because they visit alot. But my 2 danes have never seen a cat. I think my rescue 9mo. old might chase it and hurt it, my 3yr old ????? don't know if she would play with it or just walk away. Not ready to find out yet. The cat is scared to death, has been outside since last thursday, so I won't try to introduce them anytime soon. This is just getting so out of control. But I'm loving it.

I am such a good mom, or I am crazy. :o
When my son's house caught fire, I said sure come home, re group. Bring the dogs, all will be fine. Keep in mind ALL BIG DOGS, 3 bedroom ranch. but it will work.  I just woke up and found out I have a cat in the basement. OK so it was his cat, and it got out during the fire, I thought it was a goner. Nope. he brought it home.  He is so much like his mother. Oh did I add that he also brought 3 very large fish? oscars? yep. still waiting to see if he has a bird somewhere.  Thanks for listening to the crazy lady.lol

Thanks for the info. I should have said, Shyla is a Dane, the pits are big babies. And yes I do have crates for them, (take up the whole dinningroom, ha no table and chairs there) I will try to get her out more. She is afraid of the leash but when I take another dog with me she will go along.

HI< my name is Terri and I have been lurking for some time now. I don't post much and don't know how to do pictures. But I love reading and had to sign up to see your babies! We are owned by 2 Danes and 2 pits, but we also have my son and his dogs here since his house burnt down last week, so add a lab - a rott - and another pit.
Life is different with 7 dogs in the house, but it is just until his gets re-built.
Most of our fur babies are rescues, and I have a question on my Dane rescue. She was left in a basement and not socialized at all, her mom was skin and bones. Anyways. Shyla is about 9 months old now (got her at 4) and she is afraid of everything. She hates men and has bit my vet, me, and my sons girlfriend. Out of fear, not aggression. Any advice to make her feel safe? She sleeps on my bed and I love on her all the time. But things scare her and when she is cornered she will bit, first she pee's and poop's.
