I really, really, really want to add a pug puppy to our family, but how do I do that with a 160-pound Saint Bernard who's still a puppy himself (15 months old)?  I fear the pup would inadvertently get stepped on, smacked with a paw that weighs more than he does while playing, etc.

Has anyone done this successfully?  I'd sure appreciate ALL viewpoints, even if it's what I don't want to hear...

Let him know if you can help the pups!

P.S...did the other mastiff, Otis, ever get adopted - the one from a few weeks ago?

Some of you might remember Crede - we adopted him on November 6th and I posted here for a couple of months...then came Christmas, and visiting family, and my son Declan's first birthday...I just got busy!

But here's Crede in all his glory...he's gained A LOT of weight and is the bestestest dog I have EVER had.  We love him so much!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Green goop. Ew.
« on: November 24, 2005, 10:50:49 am »
When we got Crede a few weeks ago, he had a cold and some conjunctivitis .  We put him on antibiotics and had this clear ointment to put in his eyes.  Everything cleared up but now he's got the green goopies again in his eyes.  Is this normal?  Something to be concerned about?  He hasn't been around any other dogs where he'd contract conjunctivitis again.  And his eyes aren't the blood red that normally accompanies puppy pink-eye.  So what gives?  Anyone else have this? ???

 ;D ;D ;D

We had a clean crate yesterday morning, no pees inside at all during the day, and a clean crate againt his morning.

Way to go Crede!!!

(And by the way, for only having him for a week and a half, I am completely, utterly, irreversibly in love with this dog!!!)

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Ugh. What are we doing wrong?
« on: November 13, 2005, 10:45:49 am »
Crede peed in his crate last night. I fed him around 6pm and gave him
4 cups of water. I took him out 1-2 hours later for a walk, and he
peed, twice. I didn't give him any water after that. My husband came
home around 11pm and took him out again for a long walk. He peed and
poo-ed. My husband didn't give him any water after that walk either.
So he peed in his crate after going out twice, peeing both times, and
not having any water. I don't get it. Help, please.

(Oh, btw, he was just at the vet and everything checked out okay except for a little doggie cold which he's recovered from now.)

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Crede holds his very own meet-n-greet
« on: November 12, 2005, 04:29:55 pm »
We took another three-mile walk today, even thought it's windier than h&ll here.  I thought it would be good to get out of the house since the baby's been "talking" alllllllll morning (that'd be since 5am) in this really loud, shrill voice that's driving me NUTS.

Anyways, we walked down to my favorite Starbucks and I tied Crede outside (of course he's where I can always see him) and Declan (my son) and I sit down at a table with a coffee.  People were just drawn to him!  I mean, dozens of people!  And like a true ambassador of the breed, he was friendly, but not overly so, not jumpy, just happy and affectionate to everyone!  It was so good for him!

And then a strange thing happened...whe n I went outside to get him and walk home, he became extremely submissive to me and tried to run away from me.  Like I was going to hurt him or something.  I didn't understand it at all, but just kept telling him he was a good boy, and it's okay, etc.     ???    ???    ???

OK, Declan's "talking" again....gotta go.

I don't know what a Fila Mastiff is, but I figured if it's a kind of Mastiff, it must be a BP.  Here's the ad:  http://chicago.craigslist.org/pet/110913933.html

Maybe someone would like this girl...she sure is a cutie...

We evidentally have to limit Crede's water intake as he peed on the floor this morning after having been out only 2.5 hours earlier.

So, how much should he be drinking a day?  He'd drink himself into a stupor if we let him...

My husband took Crede out around 6:30am this morning because he whined and was getting antsy.  He pooped and peed (Crede, not my husband  ;D) and came inside.  It was about a 20 minute walk.  Around 9am this morning, I get an email from my husband saying that Crede just peed in the dining room, was LYING in it and LICKING it up.  GAH!

We of course expected some accidents, but the lying in it and drinking it is a little strange, no?

Any hypotheses on this behaviour?

We got our shipment from Petsmart yesterday and I had bought Crede this stuffed goose that "honks".  Thought he'd go ape for it, but no...he gently took it by the head and licked it to death.

We also got him a huge thick rawhide, but I noticed it was made in Argentina.  Is it still true that rawhides made outside the U.S. contain toxins like formaldahyde?  I'm wondering whether or not I should let him have it.  And I'm also wondering why I didn't look into where it came from before I bought it.  {{hitting self on head with rolled-up newspaper}}

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Crede's submissive peeing...

The adoption rep warned us about his submissive peeing and I experienced it this morning.  What do I do for this?
