Saint Bernard General Discussions / He's a keeper!

 ;D ;D ;D

I could not be happier!  He came in after some trepidation, walked into the hallway, laid down and fell to sleep right outside the baby's room.  He is a little traumatized because he was just turned into the rescue right before Halloween, so this is his third "home" in two weeks.  But he's staying and we're never letting him go!  The baby was sleeping in his crib and when he woke up, we brought him out to meet Crede (by the way, we're keeping the name) and Crede's tail started wagging and he actually was really excited to see the baby!  Very cool!

He's got a bit of an upper respiratory infection right now so we're taking him to the vet on Monday for some antibiotics.  We were going to take him to the vet anyways so that they'd have a baseline for his bloodwork and everything.

Oh he is soooo sweet.  Pictures to come!!

Well, I had to make the decision to meet Crede next Saturday the 12th instead of this Saturday.  ISBR had originally given us the option to meet him next Saturday because we just moved into a new place on Tuesday, but I couldn't wait to meet him and thought we'd be alot more settled than we are (okay so I was a bit unrealisticall y optimistic!)  So I just emailed the rep and asked if we could still do it next Saturday, that way we'll be settled and the pup won't be coming into a home that is in complete disarray.  He'll be stressed enough as it is, so I think this is the right thing to do.  But darn, I **really** wanted him this weekend!

This morning, I placed an order from Petsmart for food, a raised feeder, a slicker brush, a huge rawhide chewie and a stuffed goose that supposedly makes "lifelike" noises.  Yay for puppy shopping!  I think we'll keep the food stored in a garbage pail with a screw on top out on the back porch.  It'll stay fresher that way and won't be taking up alot of cabinet space.

UGH, two days has now turned into a week and a half.  GAH!!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Curry comb or slicker brush?

For a rough-coat Saint Bernard, which would you recommend?

Also, raised bowls?  Yes or no?  Is 2-quart big enough?

Oh, and would a rolled leather collar be best with the rough coat?

Please be patient with my newbie questions!

I just can't imagine not loving him when we meet him!

We're meeting a 6-month old saint bernard puppy next Saturday and will probably adopt him.  I'm picking up a used, giant-sized Vari-Kennel this week, so that's taken care of.  Now, as far as *all* of the other things we're going to need, does anyone have a recommendation for an online dog supply where I'm not going to pay outrageous shipping prices?  We live in Chicago and don't have a car, so getting everything home on the bus or train would be a huge PITA, especially with a baby in tow.  Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!   ???    :o

If you go to Petfinder and look up dogs with the name "Crede", that's him!

So I should probably introduce myself...I'm Lisa, and I live in Chicago, Illinois.  My husband and I have been looking for a Saint puppy and the rescue let us know on Monday that a 6-month old male roughcoat puppy had come in the night before, and his name?  Crede!!  (You Sox fans will realize what a fateful sign this is!)  We're going to meet him soon, and I hope we love him!

I've already got a giant sized crate for him, or whatever pup or dog we end up getting, but can you newbie and veteran owners give me some tips on what else I'll need?  I've owned several dogs before, but they were seniors and adopted late in life, so this puppy thing is kind of new to me.  Help me out please!

Also, I have a health-related question:  Since we don't know what breeder this dog is from, and will not be getting any papers on him (if we decide to adopt him), is there a way for the vet to check his hips for us?  Are x-rays on a 6-month old pup going to really be able to show anything?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can give!  And YAY SOX!!
