He could always try generating energy with it. Stick it in a sealed tank and syphon off any methane gas generated.  ;D

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Not on much.

What a total waste of space your husband is. I just LOVE the way he thinks he's not going to be an agry lush if you move! IF he could ever get his act together at all, he could do it where he is right now. You'll never change him - he'll just get worse if anything. Believe me as I spent far too long in a relationship with an alcoholic with a foul temper and had to put up with a father just the same who I now don't have anything to do with, so I have little patience or sympathy for men like this. My ex-boyfriend even tried to emotionally blackmail me to stay with him over the dog! It didn't work, by the way as my sanity meant more to me than even my lovely dog. I knew he'd never hurt him as he did love him as much as I did, but I missed the dog terribly (never gave the ex second thought!).

If you're in the position to get out, go and do it a.s.a.p. Don't tell him either, just do it as I don't want to see you on Forensic Detectives or anything  :o If possible make some arrangements for the doggies so you know they are safe and get everything arranged so you can just do a moonlight flit when he's at work or getting drunk in the bar.

Don't worry, she'll probably adjust perfectly and in a few weeks, you'll never know she's blind. My old shar-pei was blind for several years and it was impossible to tell as she knew her way round really well.

It's the gratest excuse for not moving any furniture around! You're not lazy not cleaning under the chairs, you're doing ot for the dog's sake.  ;D

How often should I be looking?
Once a week so you can catch any problems early
How often should I wipe/clean? And what should I use to wipe/clean?
Only clean if there is wax buid up. I use baby wipes for the ear leather or cotton wool moistened with ear cleaner. I like Zymox Otic ear drops as they were the only thing that worked on my shar-pei and saved me a fortune at the vets over the years. It saved my friend's pei from needing a resection operation!
When should I really wash them out? And what should I use to wash?
I don't like washing ears out as it always seemed to cause my dogs more problems. If they are scratching and tipping their heads, I'd put some Zymox in, massage well, let the dog have a good shake and wipe out any residue with cotton wool. Whatever ear cleaner you use, make sure the ears are 100% dry or you're asking for further infections. And don't use anything that fizzes or foams as dogs HATE that!
When do I break down & take him to the vet?
When I used Zymox on my shar-pei, I never had need to take them to a vet as any infections cleared up within 48 hours. So I'd say if there's no improvement after 2-3 days, maybe it's time to visit the vet.

Awwww - I think all kids should grow up with at least one dog - the world would be a far better place when those kids reached adulthood.

We never had dogs when I was growing up but luckily my great-aunt who was closer to me than my grandparents and played a big part in my life always had a dog.

I've found that shar-pei are quite talkative with a lot of snorts, purring, yodelling, yips, squeaks and grunts going on. My chow also had a lot to say for himself and always had to have the last word. But Flynn just screams down my ear if he has a pointot get across - I usually know what he means.

My first dog never talked, but she did have a habit of staring blankly at me and yet I'd knowing exactly what she wanted.

You won't be breeding her till she's 18 months to 2 years old, so there's plenty of time to see if her nose goes totally black. If you know what colours the dogs in her pedigree are, this will give you a far better indication of what genes she is carrying than anything else.

I don't know in Aussies, but in a lot of breeds, the pigment will keep filling in for a few weeks yet.

Mine don't poop in their own back yard... perish the thought, they say to me! So I have to go round the neighbourhood with a bag full of nappy sacks and pick it up fresh, tie a knot in the bag and into the nearest bin.

And being an old kennel hand, I think I know everyting there is to know about dog poop, it's collection and disposal methods - he-he! A little poop does no harm to the grass, but it is rubbish fertiliser and doesn't really compost well either in large amounts. My friend with the kennels has about 20 years worth of dog poop at the bottom of her property mixed with grass cuttings and a wood shavings. Nothing grows in it and all it's done is raise the level of the ground back there a couple of feet. It doesn't smell or attract flies, but it obviously takes a while to break down. Anybody who hates scooping the yard should get a long handled poop scoop like they use in kennels - so much better than anything else it may even make you pick up every day!  ;D

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: newfies and adolescence
« on: March 28, 2006, 02:08:50 pm »
I know the feeling Hovis is still going through that, I'll do what I want stage at 15 months, she's fine on her own but as soon as she and Bell get together they seem to compete in who can be the worst.

Yesterday for example we went to the local supermarket, a trip we do regularly. The routine is always the same, there is a footpath with walls either side that runs for about 500 yards to the edge of the supermarket. They walk off lead and stop for a biscuit at the end when they are put back on their leads. They stop near the door and are tied up to wait for me to come back from shopping, when they get another treat. Ive done the trip 100's of time but yesterday about 100 yards from the biscuit stop Hovis put her head down and started running, closely followed by Bell, both suddenly deaf. I was third and losing ground rapidly. When I got to the Supermarket, they were inside exploring, much to my embaressment and the amusement of everyone else. ( I blame the Supermarket for automatic doors!) As soon as they saw me,they came running up and sat waiting for their biscuit. Yes, they got it and were then tied up to wait for me to visit the supermarket. It's difficult trying to shop with your head down trying not to catch anyones eye ;D

Andy

:D  :D  :D And that's exactly why I don't take Flynn shopping! That and I don't think I can handle people commenting on my lovely 'rottweiller cross' every 5 minutes. Oh well, at least he hasn't been accused of being an alsatian cross for a few months!

I'm not quite sure if Flynn has hit adolescence yet or if he's going ot wait until he's 2 years old and take on the demeanour of a grizzly bear. I'm presuming that the wild bronco on a lead stage he's going through at the moment is it and things are going to get better as he gets older and more sensible. Either that or I'm going to have to trade the head collar on for a chair and whip in a few months.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: Barkley Update

Awwww - what a lovely vet you have. I'm glad Barkley has had a good day and I hope he has many more. You enjoy that boy and have some wonderful times together. Take lots and lots of pictures and even better some movie of him if you can. You'll treasure them in the future when you can look back on them and smile.

Give him a big hug for me.

My condolences on having to have Piper and Josh PTS. Did you take them to the vets or have it done at home? A lot of people swear by letting the other animals in the household see the dogs afterwards so they know they're dead.

I know when Phoebe died suddenly at home, Tinker sniffed her and she was fine afterwards. Mind you, I don't think she'd have missed her anyway! Despite them being mother and daughter, Tinker's main ambition in life was to be an only dog. Flynn, on the other hand, when Tinker had to be PTS was quite depressed when she didn't come home - I don't think he understood why she went away. A week later he got in my friend's van (we'd took Tinker on her last trip in it). He sniffed the blanket in the crate she'd been in and looked at me with a really sad and confused look on his face.

When my first dog was PTS, the cat who had thought she was her kitten for the last 13 years was inconsolable. Even a year after if you said the dogs name, the cat would run round the house crying and looking for her. Poor cat!

If you get the "live" traps where you can just release them, make sure you release them away from your house.  I had a mouse when I lived in MI and Griffey would just play with the poor thing, bat him around, let him go, chase him and bat him some more.  I would catch him in a butter dish and release him into the yard...the next night, he was back!  This happened 4 nights in a row!  The fourth time I kept him in the bowl and the next morning...no mouse for Griffey!  So I made the country mouse a city mouse and dropped him off at a fast food eatery that will remain nameless...wan t some McFries with that?  Yea I am a bleeding heart and can't even kill a little ole mouse.  :-*

That's the good thing with humane traps... you can post all the mice you cach through the letterboxes of people you don't like.  8)

I remember having them in a previous house and you could hear them racing around the loft and scrabbling down the cavity in the walls. They were so bold they would even run across the flooor when we were watching tv. I'm normally a very compassionate person, but I draw the line when something poops in my breakfast cereal! We put poison under the fridge and that was the end of the mice. We did check the room every morning for little mouse corpses so they didn't poison the dogs.

The doggies look like they're having a great time! Wangus is in his element there - all he's short of is a barrle of brandy.

oh i don't know what i would do if my puter crashed...i've probably got 3,000-4,000 pics on the puter from the last 8 months, and if i lost them i would die!

My advice is save them in about three different places! Stick 'em on the web, get a DVD rewriter (you can get one for about $30 nowadays I'm sure) and back up onto disks... twice! And get a spare hard drive and put all your photos on there too. Then if you lose them, it's not through lack of trying.

Note to self - back up all Flynn's phtotos onto DVD.  ;D

I wouldn't worry about you fooling yourself into thinking Barkley isn't ill. As long as it's not affecting his quality of life, he isn't ill as far as he's concerned. You're probably better off putting it to the back of your mind for now and making the most of your time with Barkley.

My first dog, Dingo, had to be PTS due to lymphoma. She was almost 13 and the choice was taken out of our hands as far as chemotherapy goes as the biopsy showed it was a very aggresive form of lymphoma and she had a secondary tumour in her liver - she was never going to get better whatever was done. All we could do was make her comfortable for as long as possible. She was a very fit dog for her age and was swimming a few days before she became sick. The onset was very sudden and one afternoon she just couldn't move and looked very scared - she must have been in a lot of pain. I knew that moment something serious was going on and sadly the vet comfirmed my worst fears. She rallied round on the steroids and other medication, but after a month or so, her whole front leg was swollen to three times it's size and she couldn't even lie down comfortably. We knew it was time to take her.
