General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / E-Mail Notification Problems?
« on: November 02, 2006, 07:35:47 am »
Hi,

I have posted and replied to several topics and for some reason I am not getting e-mail notification of new posts  ???

Luckily I am addicted to the site so I see new posts to topics of interest  ;D but I do like getting the e-mail reminder for things that fall off the main page.

Anyone else having a problem? The box is checked to get the notification in my posts and profile so I don't think that is the problem on my end.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Choke Chain or Martingale
« on: November 01, 2006, 08:51:19 am »
Hi,

Winslow has been on a choker since puppyhood. He does respond well but does tug some just because he wants to race ahead sometimes and I feel like the chocker is just too tight at those times. Is a martingale a better option then the chocker  ???
What is the consensus out there.

« on: October 11, 2006, 02:57:12 am »
Hi,

Well living in New England I thought tick Season was over. I last Frontlined Winslow in Early September. Well last night I found 5 Tickets on his head  :o  >:(  I called the vet they said to watch and see if he shows joint pain but that he should be ok.

I am worried and I feel like a bad dad  :-[ Any suggestions on anything to watch for? I am front lining him tonight and hopefully the risidual effect from a summer of Frontline will hold off any problems Fingers Crossed please.

Hi,

Just read this on MSNBC's site and thought it was a nice story. Even an Inmate can make a difference in a pups life, and I am sure the pup's make a difference in the inmate's life too.

Hi,

Just wondering if this can hold a Newfie??  the Coolaroo  ;D

The price is so cheap but I like the idea of airflow under the big boy to keep him cool at $24.00 it seems to good to be true

Discussions & Information on Grooming / Blowing the Coat
« on: August 08, 2006, 05:57:47 am »
Hi

Winslow is shedding like crazy!! I have combed out a ton of hair the last few days, and it is coming out in clumps. Could he be blowing his coat this late in the summer? The clumps are not leaving bear spots it just seems to be never ending. His skin is pretty dry also. I suspect the heat, he is acting normal so it is probably just the coat blow but it is all new to me does it sound right?  ???

Newfoundland Discussions / NE Water Trials Help Needed
« on: July 10, 2006, 08:31:30 am »
Hi,

Friends from The New England Newf Club sent this and I figured I'd post here. They need stewards to work the water test trials on August 12th and 13th. Anyone interested??

Hi Everyone,

I am writing to ask if you are interested in stewarding at this year's water test on August 12 and/or 13 in Auburn, MA.  Please forgive me if you have already volunteered to help us out, Thank You!  We are still in need of stewards for every level of the test WD, WRD, WRDX.

There are stewarding jobs for people of all ages and stewarding is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about water work.  If you are not entered in the water test or haven't decided whether to do water work with your dog this is an excellent time to learn more about it.  Even if you are entered you may still steward for another level if you are interested.  No experience is needed and your family and well behaved dog can come and watch from the spectators area.  You can steward for 1 level or more, 1 or both days.

The stewards may not necessarily need to go in the water, if you are interested in helping and do not want to go in the water please tell A.J. our Chief Steward.  You will still need a life jacket and water shoes for the job and you may get wet from a shaking dog so you should wear appropriate clothing and bring  sunscreen, hats and sunglasses if you like.  It's just like a day at the beach! <smile>

Please contact AJ Cole at valhallaswimme rs@gmail.com if you are interested.  I'll also be happy to answer any questions.

For those who don't know, you don't have to steward to can come and watch.   It's a fun day I'm sure you and your family will enjoy.

Thank you for your consideration.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Holistic Mosquito Spray
« on: June 19, 2006, 01:25:07 pm »
Hi,

I've been browsing other forums today looking for Mosquito repellants for Winslow. I found this on Newf Net  ;) and it looks interesting. So I figure I'd post it here.

Rich

If your Newfie suffers from allergies, you may want to try something gentle without essential oils.

To make your own spray:
Make a tea.
2 parts Nettle
2 parts Catnip
2 part Yarrow
2 part lavender buds or dried or fresh.
1 part of sage or thyme

Make a very strong tea and place in a sprayer. Spray the newfies coat. Use once or twice a day. Try not to keep the tea longer than 24 hours. The scents that repel will evaporate.

If you made too much and want to use it (because the herbs are good for the hair anyway and nettle helps sooth any bites), add lavender essential oil at 1 % per ounce of tea. That is about 3 drops per ounce of liquid. Add about 1/2 tsp of apple cider vinegar per cup of tea.

Shake well. VERY WELL. Essential oil does not blend well with water, but the vinegar will help. Shake thoughout application.
Essential oils will evaporate rapidly, so only do this per application.

This is not meant to kill fleas. Just to repel them.

You can also use a homemade powder. You can use this on your carpets, doggie bedding and doggie.

Use a coffee grinder to powder the herbs.

2 parts lavender bud
2 parts yarrow
2 parts sage or thyme
2 parts catnip
1 part rosemary
1 part baking soda (optional) Some folks use diatomaceous earth. If you choose this option make sure you buy food grade diatomaceous earth.

Create on the side
10 drops of lemon essential oil
5 drops of rosemary
10 drops of lavender

For every 1 cup of powder add 5 drops of essential oil blend. Slowly. Shake well while adding. Keep the mixture enclosed and as fresh as possible. Sprinkle on pet (NO CATS) like you would any other powder. You can use on the bedding area and carpet. Use daily or every other day or less.

Winslow is developing Leg matts, His coat otherwise is fantastic and requires little grooming  :D I have never groomed him myself, and I am looking for suggestions on how to manage these leg matts. He is going to the groomer Sunday for the works but I'd like to take care of small matts and stuff with out the groomer expense.
