Yeaterday my family decided to go out of town to shop around looking at new furniture prices (we NEED new furniture, with 5 dogs in the house!!) and we had Darmok and Lucy, the little 8 lb rat terrier, with us.  We ended up in another town that had a rather nice dog park, so thought we'd let the dogs out to play for a while.  It was cold out and we figured the park would be desserted, but NOOOO it was packed!  So we let the 2 k9s out to play, and Dar behaved beautifully.  She accepted all the dogs' sniffs and butts like she was supposed to, and was having a good time, but Lucy decided to be our protector!  All the dogs there were big dogs, too.  A huge Malmute, an airdale, a 6 mo old dane puppy (which was adorable, by the way) and various big mixes.  Lucy snapped and growled and was one of those little ankle biters that I always made fun of!!!  She's 4 mo old and had never been around strange dogs before, but she was so embarrassing that we left.  The other dog owners thought she was funny at first--there's no way she could have hurt any of the dogs there, but she still ruined Dar's chance of having an enjoyable time!

What a nice bunch of dogs!  I saw so many Big Paws that were so gorgeous.   I like the little guys, too, but I'm glad that Maltese didnt win!  Looked like a walking wig!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Doggie Doctor???
« on: November 18, 2005, 12:05:01 pm »
I was sitting here reading some of the BPO posts and my tv is on some cartoon channel (I couldnt find the remote to change it) and the funniest commercial came on for a new kids' toy for Christmas, called 'Play-Doh Doggie Doctor'.  It was hilarious!! You get this little brown plastic beagle-type dog that you put different colors of Play-Doh in and squeeze it's head, and you can make pink stuff come flowing out it's mouth, or green stuff come flowing out it's ears!  They didn't show where the brown stuff comes flowing out from! haha ;D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Different Personalities
« on: November 14, 2005, 05:01:11 pm »
My 2 dobies are so much alike, but have such different personalities! Dar is almost 3 and I got her when she was 7 wks old from the breeder, and straight out of the litter.  She is somewhat 'aloof' with strangers, and often that way with everybody! But she is so smart---she can learn something new in two or three attempts, and she is basically a quiet dog.   Only barks if someone knocks at the door, or if something looks 'wrong' to her (she barked at the guy on the neighbor's roof who was fixing the shingles, cos people just dont belong there!)
Sasha, on the other hand, is a rescue, and is sooo loveable, she wants to snuggle and would crawl inside your mouth if possible!  She just can't get close enough!  But she is hard-headed, and it takes a very long time to change certain undesireable behaviors.  She was almost a year old before she was totally housebroken, she still will get into the trash can unless it is emptied continuously, and she loves to bark at everything under the sun that moves!  I tell people that she is a work in progress.  I took her to a basic obedience class, and she tried to snap at a Pom (well, she was sort of provoked by the little snot, but that's beside the point) You dont try to eat your classmates!  The next class after that episode, the instructor said, "would you mind moving Sasha to the END of the line?" I sure hope she gets a little better manners soon.

Doberman Pictures / Dar's Agility Practice
« on: November 13, 2005, 08:11:04 am »
I took Darmok to a beinner's Agility class a year ago.  She learned all the obstacles, and had a good time.  She will never be one of those Border Collies, though, cos she can do it, but she doesn't LOVE it! :D  I made a few obstacles at home to keep her interest up, and it's good exercise for her too.  Her "playground" is the envy of all the neighborhood kids! ;D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Does Your Dog Talk?
« on: November 11, 2005, 10:55:35 am »
My 2 girls are sooooo vocal!  Sasha yodels and dog-talks everytime she is playing, or wants out, or wants a treat...heck, she's talking all the time!  Dar is pretty selective about being vocal, but when she does, it blows me away!  She can say (with pretty clear enunciation, in fact) "apple", "momma" and can really say "I want out". If you ask her if she wants to go out to pee, or go for a car ride, she nods or shakes her head, too! :o  She keeps me laughing all the time!  I've seen dogs on Animal Planet (my favorite tv channel) that say their names, whole sentences, and all kinds of stuff.  What does your dog say? ???

Big Dogs with Jobs / Search & Rescue
« on: November 10, 2005, 07:46:21 pm »
Are any of you guys involved in, or ever have been involved in, Search & Rescue?  I belong to a Vol. Fire Dept here locally, and we've had to go out many times at any time of the day or night, all kinds of terrain, looking for someone's lost child.  Thankfully, the missing child ends up being asleep under the bed, or playing video games at the neighbor's house without anyone knowing where he/she is.  But I got the name and phone number of a guy here locally who is going to start a SAR team, and they are looking for "volunteers. spotters, and working dogs". WOW. That's right up my alley! :)  I am going to try to get in touch with this guy over the weekend and find out more details.  I don't know if my dog Dar will qualify or not--she will be 3 in December, so they may consider her to be too young still, maybe not experienced enough (she's only played hide & seek w/ family members) or she may be....I hate to say this...too fat!  Who knows, I may not meet the qualifications, either.  Maybe I'm too old, not experienced enough, or...yes, me too... too fat.  Anyway, I'm gonna give it a shot.  I'd be willing to be a spotter for the dogs that are on the team, or even be a 'victim' who just hangs out behind a tree till the dog finds me. Just wondered if anyone else has ever been through this training with their pooch?

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Gentle Leaders
« on: November 08, 2005, 04:39:12 pm »
Do any of you guys use a 'Gentle Leader' halter device on your large dogs?  I have used one to get my "puller" Dar to slow her down, and it worked like a charm.  I don't hardly ever have to use it with her anymore, but I was just wondering what everyone's feelings are on this subject.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Late Halloween Pix
« on: November 07, 2005, 11:37:57 am »
I know it's late, but I have to share the pics of my Dobies going to the "Pet-O-Ween" party at our local Farm supply store (an annual event! :)
Sasha is dressed as a pink poodle--She rolled her eyes when I put this getup on her, but she went along with it.  Darmok is dressed as a Rural King employee.  The contest was at Rural King, and we thought kissing up would net us a prize---but it didnt.  A pet skunk (Miss Lilly Rose) dressed as a bumble bee won the contest, but we all got a real neat consolation prizes--Pig Ears for everyone!!! ;D
