Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / newfie/pyr puppies - too cute!
« on: June 27, 2007, 09:33:12 am »
I so want one but there is the possibility that there might me a malinois puppy coming here soon.  Anyone interested?  I would be glad to drive up to Austin this weekend and pick one up and foster until transport can be arranged.  Okay I might have to grab one for myself if I pick one up for someone else.

Anything Non-Dog Related / What is wrong with people?
« on: June 24, 2007, 06:42:57 am »
Just a vent about all the bad stories that have been showing up everywhere about breeders starving and leaving their pups everywhere, people on CL moving and for some reason can't take their pets with them, and the most horrible story that I just read ever.  I'm attaching the website but I will warn you that it is despicable and heinous what has happened.  Plus I just read an urgent message off of Petfinder about a Rottie in a shelter in LA that came in starving and they will only release him to a rescue because they don't adopt out Rotties.  This is what stupid BSLs and breed bans come to.  Good animals suffering and being euthanized because no one will make people accountable for their actions.  Sorry I just had to vent.  This has all gotten to me today.  I need a mental health day.

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The solvent dissolves adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean.  The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on vomit stains, scrub with a brush, and then blot dry.

6. Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle and spray bees or wasps to kill them.

9. Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water in a Ziploc freezer bag and freeze for a slushy, refreshable ice pack for aches, pain or black eyes.

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the sun for three days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply
the tincture to aches and pains.

11. To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka on your chest and back as a liniment.

12. To cure foot odor, wash your feet with vodka.

13. Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish sting.

14. Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy to remove the urushiol oil from your skin.

15. Swish a shot of vodka over an aching tooth. Allow your gums to absorb some of the alcohol to numb the pain.

Games & Jokes / AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES
« on: June 18, 2007, 09:54:38 am »
I needed a laugh today and it sounds like everyone else could use one too.  I hope you enjoy it.

AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES

1. If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat and presto! The blockage will almost instantly remove itself.

2. Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.

3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet seat by simply using the sink.

4. For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.

5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you will be afraid to cough.

7. Have a bad toothache? Smash your thumb with a hammer and you will forget all about the toothache.

8. Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are: You only need two tools - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

9. Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

       Thought for the day:

SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES. THEY ARE NOT REALLY GOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT THEY STILL BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN YOU PUSH THEM DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS .

Belgian Malinois Discussions & Pictures / dorky boy story
« on: May 21, 2007, 08:57:47 am »
I wish I had pictures of this story and I will try and get some because it's too funny.  So every night after work I've been going outside and playing ball with the dogs maybe once or twice a night.  We have 3 large balls that I continuously throw to wear them out.  Anyway, Shiner will chase the ball and the girls for a little while and then he gets tired.  He will grab a ball and carry it in his mouth the whole time he chases the girls and the other balls.  Then he gets really excited and starts trying to bark with the ball in his mouth and of course it makes me laugh so he gets more excited and barks more and then starts drooling.  He will be all foamy and prancing around barking his dorky head off with a ball in his mouth.  He won't ever drop the ball.  He's a class act.  Good thing he's super cute and so sweet.  Also good thing I love big, dumb, and pretty guys.  I just had to share that with everyone.

Belgian Malinois Discussions & Pictures / last night's reenactment
« on: April 28, 2007, 08:17:39 am »
I was playing ball with the pups last night and got the ball stuck in my tiny plum tree.  So I had to perform a reenactment today so you could have pics.  A side note on the tree: if you look really closely to the limbs you can see where Shiner chewed the limbs off.  He pulled it over and exposed the root ball over the winter but it still lives.  This is their favorite glow-in-the-dark ball right now.  Then there are pics of cooling down after all the hard work that I made them do.  You even get pics of my sweet baby faced pig boy.  ;)  Enjoy!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I just want to know
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:50:02 am »
when do whiney little boys become big dogs?  You thought I was going to ask about human guys, didn't you?  ;) Shiner is a pushy little dork that still has the puppy complaint bark.  The one that says "She stole my toy and I want it back NOW!!!"  I know he's only 1yo but I keep hoping that he'll mature a little bit.  Not much cause I love his goofy self but I just can't stand the high pitched whiney bark at full volume in the house when he's right behind me.  I had him broken of that habit but he's done it twice today.

so far of course.  All 3 of the dogs are going nuts for this toy that Michael brought home last night for Kaila so he had to bring another one home today and I'm looking for a third one.  Here is a picture of it http://www.dog.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=101992+SM

He got the big size and so far it's still all in one piece.  Just thought I would share especially since we are all looking for the Holy Grail of toys.

Big Dogs with Jobs / Dock Diving
« on: March 10, 2007, 10:22:18 am »
Has anyone tried dock diving with your pups?  I'm looking for something to do with Kaila now that I have free time again.  She loved agility but since she has had two partial ACL tears just playing in the back yard I was hoping for something a little less stressful on her legs.  She loves the jumping part of agility the best and dock diving seems like it would be better on her because the water would cushion her landing and then she has to swim back to shore.  Am I thinking correctly on this or way off base.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  I still have to take her some place and see if she can swim first.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / indestructible toys?
« on: February 24, 2007, 08:46:57 pm »
I'm looking for some great indestructible toys.  I know we have covered this before but I need a refresher since Shiner eats everything.  I have two of those hard red rubber bones that you can stuff the ends with peanut butter or whatever.  Well, Shiner has eaten one end of one of the bones.  He got a globe ball last night and has already ripped the continents off of it and that was withing 30 minutes of having it.  He has eaten through the privacy fence and eaten a tree in the back yard.  I'll even settle for a toy that will last maybe a day or even an hour or two.  I'm not asking for much.  ;D  Any ideas?

Anything Non-Dog Related / Bad start to the day
« on: February 06, 2007, 07:53:38 am »
I just had to share and I also had to try for a little humor in this post because I just don't like to be sad.  Anyway, I woke up this morning and was leaving to head to work when I saw my little black cat Gigi-Marie lying on her side half under the coffee table.  My cat is cat-atonic and she had a major seizure in front of me.  I'm waiting for my vet clinic to open and am taking her up there.  It also sounds like she aspirated on her vomit.  I think she may have been this way since after 1:00am this morning.  From what I am seeing and since she hasn't even remotely had a coherrent moment since I found her I don't think she will make it.  Please keep her in your thoughts.  She was a feral cat that was trapped at a zoo I worked at nearly 10 years ago.  I have no idea on her age but she was an adult because she never grew anymore after I got her.  Sorry this is so long.

Newfoundland Discussions / newfie breeder website
« on: January 13, 2007, 02:26:48 pm »
I saw an ad for this website in the paper selling newfie puppies.  Obviously the pups are super cute but my question is what's wrong with the male "Tigger".  He looks odd to me kind of like the Japanese lion statues that guard the entrance to buildings.  Anyway he looks like he has mastiff somewhere in his line and not like everyone else's newfies here.  Or is it just me?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / fireworks - ugh!
« on: December 31, 2006, 08:38:56 pm »
I just got home from dinner with friends and Cinder had broken out of her kennel while I was gone.  Apparently someone was shooting off fireworks while I was gone and she freaked out.  She was all slimy from slobber and is pacing and panting like crazy.  She doesn't want to go outside and is generally upset.  I just had to give her a benadryl to relax her.  I was able to get her to do some sits and a high five for me while I fed them and she refused to eat.  This is the first time she has ever reacted this way and she is nearly 3yo.  Anyone else's dog develop a fear all of a sudden?  I feel so bad that she was all alone when she freaked out.
