Hi everyone,

The storm door (screen door) that goes from our family room to our garage is broken, it doesn't latch.  If the garage door is open Harley lets himself out whenever he wants to go out (generally to visit with passersby - strangly not when he has to go to the bathroom and I'm sitting - then he whines to go out...anyway).  Harley is on invisible fencing so it is no big deal that he lets himself out.

The door is in very bad shape and we want to replace it - but it would be nice if Harley could keep going out - and even nicer if he could let himself back in!!

I found 1 door that was $800.00 - that isn't going to fly with hubby - especially since dog and kids ruin storm doors, quickly in our house.

Does anyone know where to get reasonably priced storm doors with doggie doors already installed in them.  OR has anyone installed a doggie door in a storm door?

Thanks for any suggestions - I think Harley will have a bad headache if we replace the door, he will keep hitting it over and over trying to get out - love him DEARLY but not the sharpest tool.

Thanks
Randy

Hi everyone,

Harley just ate a chicken wing bone.  My daughter accidently dropped it and before we could grab it he ate it;
It was small about 1 1/2 inches the drumstick kind of wing.

We will watching his poop and behavior - anything else I should know??

Thanks

Hi everyone,

When I came into work today (at the local High School) I was given a yellow smiley face sticker (like wal-mart) and was told the theme of the day is be thankful so I want to take this opportunity to:

Thanks all of your for sharing your families, stories, big and small dogs, advice and lives with me.

Funny, how a group of people I have never met have influenced so many of my decisions and I spend so much time with.

So thanks friends!!

Flat Coated Retriever Discussions & Pictures / Itchy, itchy, itchy
« on: May 11, 2009, 01:51:44 pm »
Poor Harley is sooo itchy  :P

I have brushed, furmitated and brushed some more - I see nothing!!  No fleas, no mites, no dandruff - he eats duck and potatoe food which keeps his skin moist (from the oil in the duck).

He seems so sad and depressed he is mopey - even my husband mentioned that he seems to have gotten old in the past 2 days  :'(

We are going to the vet tomorrow at 9:30 - my regular vet isn't available I hope I like this other vet.  I'm thinking it is seasonal allergies??

He keeps rubbing against the furniture to rub his back!

Poor baby

Collars, crates, & other cool things / IRobot Roomba Pet Series????
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:57:55 am »
Good morning everyone.

I was just sitting at work doing some things on the internet and came across and advertisement for a IRobot Roomba Pet Series.  I have to say I have wanted a Roomba since they came out but hubby always says its not going to clean with everything on our floors (dog toys, dog beds, dog etc.)

Does anyone have a roomba and specifically the Roomba Pet Series?

I know I will still have to do regular vacuuming but I thought it would prevent the everyday swiffer and or vacuum.

Thanks for your opinions

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / I can't take the whining!!
« on: February 10, 2009, 03:52:23 am »
Good morning everyone!!

I have written about Harley's whining before but it is getting worse - I didn't think it was possible!!  He whines when I'm not home (my son and husband want to kill him!) he won't play, they can't distract him he just sits by the window or door and whines.

Well now he whines all the time non-stop for no reason, he is fed, has fresh water, just came in from being outside, etc.  he whines morning, noon and night.  I LOVE Harley but I lost it this morning - I was trying to get ready for work, feeling stressed (computer issues), and he just would not be quiet.  I have tried ignoring him - he does not stop!!  I have tried distracting him but honestly, I can't be distracting him every minute.  I feel badly but when I left I was so Pis$*ed that I wanted to rip his vocal cords out!!  I have tried squirting him with a water bottle but then again I have to be in the room with him.  He also starts back whining about 20 seconds later.  I have never heard anything like this - I am to the point where I don't even want another dog because I'm afraid Harley will teach him/her to whine also!!  The place I board him calls him Honda (not Harley) because a Harley doesn't whine!!

I am sitting at work still trying to get my blood pressure down!!   By the way there is no medical reason for the whining we were at the vet about 2 weeks ago.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Teenager for sale or rent
« on: February 06, 2009, 03:24:45 am »
OK actually just for rent!!

So my darling 16 (almost 17) year old son got his drivers license 2 weeks ago.  We are pretty careful of where he is allowed to drive; but we did allow him to drive to school (3 miles from our house).  Yesterday on the way to school he had an accident!!  Thankfully, neither party was injured but my sons car is a mess!!  It is an Acura TL that my Mother had given him (2002) it was in excellent condition.

My insurance will now go sky high and the little darling can't get a job because of baseball season (he does work all summer as a camp counselor).

So I am renting him out for all kinds of jobs; picking up poop, dog walking, snow shoveling etc.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Good thoughts please
« on: January 23, 2009, 06:29:18 pm »
Good morning everyone!!

I just got a phone call from my neighbor and really good friend that they just had to leave Rusty their 6 year old dog at the emergency vet because he has eaten some raisens.  Rusty is not only Harleys very favorite friend (except me) but a beloved family pet and her sons service dog (Zach has autism - Rusty is trained to find him when he wanders off and so many other jobs).

The emergency vet said the amount injested makes it boarder line - they are pumping his stomach and giving him charcoal -

I know the power of BPO thoughts and we could really use some - I can't believe anything would happen to sweet Rusty so I am being upbeat and positive in my thoughts that he will be OK.

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / And now THIS?
« on: December 02, 2008, 02:49:45 am »
So you may have read my post earlier this week about Harley squating and piddling in my family room in front of my husband and myself for no reason, we were home and sitting in the same room, he had been out about 1/2 hour before he was just being naughty!!

Well yesterday, he decided to take my sons play station game and chew it.  My son wasn't very happy - of course, as a good doggie Mom I blamed it on my son for leaving his game within Harleys reach (although Harley doesn't generally chew so it has never been an issue)

My baby is turning back into a puppy!!  Maybe because I was looking at puppies at PetSmart the other day (rescue puppies) he is trying to remind me how much work a puppy really is!!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / He did NOT just do that!!!
« on: November 29, 2008, 05:39:29 pm »
Hi everyone!!

It is around 11:10 at night my husband just walked in with my son and his friend, they walk past Harley he just squats in the middle of the floor and piddles...alot!!!  I heard running water and I was like WTH?

Harley has had a good day - someone was home all day, he was in and out of the house a hundred times, didn't go to the door and hit the door knob with his nose, didn't whine -which he does ALL the time.  He had a very normal day so I don't think he isn't feeling well.

Why did he do this?  As you can imagine my husband (who doesn't love dogs) was LESS than pleased.  Then I got pissed at hubby for supervising me while I cleaned the mess!!

So that is my issue for the night.

Goodnight BPOers

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Is it time for the Easter Bunny?
« on: November 26, 2008, 11:42:01 am »
OK So I'll start off by saying we are Jewish so the Easter Bunny doesn't generally come to our house.

So we have about 3 inches of snow last night; Harley comes in from his last potty outing of the night carrying what I think is a snow ball...WRONG it is an egg - a regular chicken egg that you buy in any supermarket - I think very strange and take it away.

Go to bed, get up this morning, Harley goes out (I have forgotten about the egg) in comes Harley again carrying a raw, whole egg, he is sooo gentle he carries it in, puts it carefully on his rug and then mean Mommy comes and takes it away.  So off I go into the snow to see if I can find any other eggs - nope so I bring Harley out and lo and behold he brings me to one last egg.

Now I am a worrier - I am thinking is someone trying to poisen Harley?  The eggs were about 6 feet onto the property not broken, not thrown.  So I'm out this morning raking the snow to make sure I have all the eggs and it seems I do.

So the theory is...I am substitute teaching for a beloved teacher at the school and shall we say I am NOT beloved actually I believe the word the students use is Bi^&h.  I am very tough I need to be or they will walk all over me.  So we figure someone came to egg the house and got nervous or surprised and dropped the eggs on the lawn?

Now I want to be even Bit&^ier (if thats possible).  My poor son goes to the same school.  It sucks to be him.

Anything Non-Dog Related / NDR - Watch for pirate gold coin candy
« on: October 30, 2008, 09:01:02 am »
Hi everyone - Happy almost Halloween.

I received an e-mail that:
The Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate Coins are being recalled due to the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient found in milk products that has caused many infant deaths in China.

I checked Snopes and they have it listed as true.

Just a heads up

Hi everyone!!

I was inquiring today about a collie puppy I saw advertised in our local paper.  It is rare to see a collie in the classified.

The lady was nice, very excited about her dogs, she does not breed for show, but for family dogs, her female is 4 and this is her second litter.

I asked if the pups were akc and she said no they are ckc I thought Canadian kennel club but she said Continental Kennel Club she said it is much like AKC but for dogs that aren't going to be show dogs more family dog oriented?

So I figured I would come to the experts to see what you all know!!

Thanks!!

Randy
