So you all do such a great job of getting your dogs to take pictures; Harley is such a poop he won't sit still, won't wear a hat or anything..here are some outakes and the one decent picture we have taken (my son and I have been trying for about 3 days!!  Harley must think we are nuts constantly running for the camera - OK hopefully these are sized right.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / No pictures but it was fun!
« on: November 19, 2006, 10:07:57 pm »
Hi everyone I volunteered at our local humane society yesterday it was have your pets picture taken with Santa day.  It is a fundraiser.  I didn't take Harley because he is Jewish.

I was supposed to be at the gift shop table but there wasn't alot of business there so I became the official greeter and pet petter!!

What beautiful animals who were all obviously very loved and taken care of.   Such a nice way to spend a few hours on a Sunday morning.

I did realize that at least 80% of the people who came in had 2 dogs.  I tried the argument on my hubby and he is standing strong on no more animals.

Liz, I saw another beautiful light color dobie - he was quite a handful, but he had an experienced owner who is working with him - he had QUITE a personality.

Ah such a nice day - my next assignment - wrapping gifts at the local book store also a fundraiser - I figure the more time I spend away from the adoptable animals the better!!!

Hope everyone had a great weekend as well.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Afraid of Harley???????
« on: November 18, 2006, 03:36:38 am »
So today is my daughters 8th birthday party - it is a PRETEND sleepover, we will do a craft, eat dinner and watch a movie.

But can you believe all but one of the girls (8 years old) are scared to death of Harley!!  He wants to be their friend and they just SCREAM!!  We actually don't have many playdates because her friends are such wusses (sp).  So I have hired my son to take care of the dog - not be in the same room as the party at any time.

Poor Harley he really just wants to be everyones friend :'(

I am still working on hubby for a Mastiff then NOONE will ever visit us!!

I currently have a canon power shot point and shoot auto focus 4.0 mega pixel camera.  It is a few years old I paid way to much for it and I HATE it!!

My pictures are always slightly out of focus and humans and doggies have major red eye.

I have asked for a new camera for the holidays and was wondering since you all post such wonderful pictures what kind of camera do you have and do recommend it?

Thank you so much for your feedback!!

SOOn if nobody calls to adopt me.    PLEASE CALL KATHY ASAP FREE

Hubby still says I can't get another dog and I already have a male - kind of wanted a female but he looks so sweet so if anyone is looking I can get you more info

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I can't believe I did this!
« on: October 17, 2006, 12:29:03 pm »
I get e-mails weekly from our local human society - Lollypop Farm.  I have been noticing in the animals for adoption section that many of the animals don't have photos - it would seem if a precious face pops out at you you may be more willing to go take a look.  So I emailed them and as I suspected it is because they simply don't have time to take and post the photos - so of course because I'm not busy enough -  I VOLUNTEERED.  So I have to go in and talk to them about times and strategies but it looks like I will be taking some pictures - Ugghh and most of you know I really want a second dog (Actually an American Mastiff) but what are the chances I'm not going to meet my true love there?

I'm nervously excited - I have always wanted to do something with animals!!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Help with down stay..please
« on: September 28, 2006, 12:26:32 pm »
Hi - yesterdays birthday boy is getting himself in quite a bit of trouble lately with his staring at us while we eat and constantly barking at us for no apparent reason.

We thought it would be a good idea to put him in a down stay while we eat and when he is being naughty, the problem is he WON'T stay down!!   He pops up like a punching bag.  We are definately using a serious tone to our voice and giving him a clear command.

He probably popped up at least 7 times tonight, as soon as we turn to walk away he pops up!  He is getting himself in SO much trouble with my husband - I love Harley and find him cute and all but it is hard to defend him when my husband is actually right (don't tell him I said so).

Any advise would be so very appreciated!

Randy

Food Discussion & Information / Birthday cake or biscuits?
« on: September 20, 2006, 03:15:47 am »
Hi everyone

Harley's birthday is next week and I want to make him a special treat to share with is friends Rusty, Tara, Smokey and Fred.  I used to buy cakes for our last dog Stoli but the doggie bakery has closed so now I need to make him something myself.

I have run a few recipies off of the internet but was hoping someone had one that was tried and true.  So if you have a recipe you wouldn't mind sharing Harley, his friends and I would really appreciate it!!

 :)THANKS :)

Remembering those no longer with us. / Rainbow Bridge and 9/11/01
« on: September 12, 2006, 07:15:30 am »
I just read this on the Weight Watchers board and thought it was nice.  I can only hope it is true and many people and animals were reunited or found new best friends.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, there was an unprecedented amount of activity at the Rainbow Bridge. Decisions had to be made. They had to be made quickly. And, they were. An issue, not often addressed here, is the fact that many residents really have no loved ones for whom to wait. Think of the pups who lived and died in hideous puppy mills. No one on earth loved or protected them. What about the many who spent unhappy lives tied in backyards? And the ones who were abused...whom are they to wait for? We don't talk about that much up here. We share our loved ones as they arrive, and are happy to do so. But we all know there is nothing like having your very own person who thinks you are the most special pup in the Heavens.
On this particular Tuesday morning a request rang out for pups not waiting for specific persons to volunteer for special assignment. An eager, curious crowd excitedly surged forward, each pup wondering what the assignment would be. They were told by a solemn voice that unexpectedly, all at once, over 4000 loving people had left Earth long before they were ready. All the pups, as all pups do, felt the humans' pain deep in their own hearts. Without hearing more, there was a clamoring among them.

"May I have one to comfort?"
"I'll take two...I have a big heart!"
"I have been saving kisses forever!"

One after another they came forward, begging for assignment. One cozy-looking fluffy pup asked hesitantly, "Are there any children coming? I would be very comforting for a child ‘cuz I'm soft and squishy and I always wanted to be hugged."

A group of Dalmatians came forward asking to meet the firefighters and be their friends. The larger working breeds offered to greet the police officers and make them feel at home. Little dogs volunteered to do what they do best: cuddle and kiss.

Dogs who had never had a kind word or a pat on the head while they were on Earth stepped forward and said, "I will love any human who needs love."

Then all the dogs, no matter where on Earth they originally came from, rushed to the Rainbow Bridge and stood waiting, overflowing with love to share, each tail wagging an American flag.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I'm back up and running
« on: August 22, 2006, 11:21:00 am »
Hi everyone - I have been able to read the posts but not post to them :(.  I now have a new computer and I don't have dial up internet service anymore!! :D

I feel like I have had so much to say and just couldn't speak!!

Right now Harley is in the driveway getting groomed!  I sometimes wish I was him.

As some of you might know I have been bugging my husband for a second dog and he won't go for it...this past weekend he took me (unprovoked) to our local animal shelter..."Just to look" but it means he is warming up to the idea!  I'm pretty excited.  Thankfully for the dogs there weren't many animals up for adoption and there were many people waiting to see the few that were there so we didn't see "The Dog" but I definately have my eyes open!!

Well, I feel like I am back to the group now, and I feel really good about it!

Hope everyone has a great night!!

Hi everyone I took Harley to the vet today because he has a growth the size of a pea on the inside flap of his ear.  It has been there a week but I thought it was a bite I believe it itches since he is rubbing it on the rug (he also has an ear infection in that ear).  Anyway, the vet took one look and said it is one of two things:

hystiocytoma - this would be a good thing it is benign and it will scab over and fall off

Mass cell tumor - this is bad it would require surgery on his ear and reconstructive surgery as they have to remove the mass plus 2 inches around

The vet said it would take 24 hours for the slide to dry to get an accurate reading; then she called about 3 hours later because she knows that I am a neurotic doggie mother.  So she believes that it is the first one the good one, but she stressed when I was at the office that she has never seen a dog over 2 years old with the hystioytoma it is generally something puppies get - so she said to keep an eye on him check the size and wait a month or two I'm SO nervous!!  Just wanted my big dog friends opinions has anyone else had these issues?

Thanks!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Not doing well
« on: June 26, 2006, 05:23:22 pm »
Hi everyone -

I know I am not the biggest poster on the site but I am feeling that I need the BPO family.

My father-in-law is in the hospital in Buffalo, NY, he had surgery on Thursday for a double bypass - this is his third bypass and we were told very risky - he came thru the surgery OK but has an infection that they can't find, there are so many complications :'(.  They can't do the cat scan until they take out the heart pump and they can't do that until his heart is OK on its own.  The doctors believe the infection is in the bowel and from what I understand if the bowel goes it is over...he is working so hard to get better and this could do him in.  I was up in Buffalo (about 90 miles from my house) on Saturday and Sunday, then I came home Sunday night because he was doing OK - I was home less than an hour and got a call from my poor hubby who is SO strong but he was so upset I packed the kids back up in the car and off we went again.  I just came home again (Monday night).  It is such a see-saw; let me say that my FIL is not the healthies guy alive and this fight is taking so much out of him.

He is a lovely man (we have had a few differences but have worked things out).  So please if you have a minute say a good word for my FIL - Phil.

Thanks so much for listening

Randy

Here is a picture of Harley with his chicken - as I mentioned on an earlier post the bad kitty is his favorite but chicken is a close second, he also has the alligator, frog (which makes crinkly noises) and snake - maybe I should by stock in the company.

Here is a picture (I hope) of Harley lying under our dogwood tree - he isn't one for photos so I am very pleased with this one - we took it this morning so I could e-mail it to his Fur-Mom for Mother's Day.

As far as the nice weather I'm glad I enjoyed it because we get very few!

Hope everyone has a great day
