Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Advise on stopping licking?
« on: May 01, 2006, 02:25:14 am »
Hi everyone I could use some advise:

Harley my 4 year old Flat Coat is turning into quite a licker - it is kind of gross - I don't mind an occasional slurp but everytime he is near anyone they get a bath.  Also, every piece of exposed skin on my kids get licked.  I thought I read something a few years ago that this is a dominence thing - coating everyone with spit?  How can I stop or at least curtail it?  My DH doesn't pet him anymore because he doesn't want to get slurped, and my son who is 14 will pet him but once he start licking he pushes him away I'm sad I want him to be everyones friend.

As always, thank you for the advise!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Best doggie friends
« on: April 18, 2006, 11:46:04 pm »
Here are a couple pictures of my Harley with his best doggie friend Rusty.  Rusty is a mix breed and he is a service dog - he belongs to a boy who has autism, he goes to school and everywhere with him.  Harley and Rusty play almost everyday and just sit and stare at each others houses when we aren't home and vise versa.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Naughty dog tales
« on: April 09, 2006, 11:14:03 am »
OK So Sadies pillow incident has given me an idea - since we all got a good chuckle out of the story picturing cute Sadie with little white balls all over her - tell a story of your own naughty babies!!

Harley is also a naughty boy so I can think of a few but on the same line as Sadies -

My daughter had gotten a new dress up kit for her birthday it came in a large cardboard box with a latch on it that looked like a treasure chest - so we went to give my daughter a bath and left harley (who was probably about 1 year old) downstairs - well we came down and it looked like a Flamingo was killed in our living room - bright pink feathers everywhere!!  all over harley also - and he was wagging his tail and looking so proud as if to see look I killed the big bad bird - it took awhile but we figured out it was the feather boa that came in the dress up set he had knocked the box over and sprung the lock!!

My daughter wasn't pleased but I thought it was quite amusing

I am sure all of our babies have been naughty I look forward to giggling at your doggies stories!!

Are you getting excited aren't you getting your puppy in about a week or so?  I am excited for you - please post lots of pictures - I need to torture my hubby with them.

I'm still not getting anywhere but I'm still nagging him almost daily.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Western NY get together???
« on: March 24, 2006, 09:51:43 am »
Hi everyone

A recent post about an adopted puppy has shown us that there are some people living fairly close to one another and we are thinking of a meet and greet.  Rochester is not known for dog parks although there is one unofficial park.  If you are interested in getting together please let us know where you are from and if your area has any nice dog parks - we don't have to do the Rochester area but something close by - Batavia, Buffalo, Syracuse or anyplace in between.

Hopefully we can pull this off in the spring before it gets to hot.  Hope to hear from lots of you!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Bald spot on his Butt!!
« on: March 15, 2006, 01:29:07 pm »
Harley is off to the vet tomorrow he has a bald spot on his tush about the size of a half dollar.  We had him groomed recently and had him shaved down to just about a lab coat and now not only do I see the bald spot but I also think I see bumps one on each side of his tail (could be bones that I hadn't seen before due to the fur).  He doesn't like me to touch his tush so I can't feel if they are bumps or bones or maybe I couldn't tell anyway.

Hoping I am just being an overprotective mommy and that nothing is wrong!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Oh to be Harley!!
« on: February 26, 2006, 02:51:23 pm »
Harley is having a good day - instead of hanging out alone while I work today he has the mobile groomer coming to give him a bath, pedicure, haircut and doggie massage - of course, the family probably won't eat this month to pay for it but my baby is worth it!!

He also spent 5 days last week at the pet resort (OK Kennel) but if you have to stay anywhere it would be the place to be - he was in 2 doggie play groups - had radiant heating so the floor was toasty warm - they gave him a toy at check in and a nice clean bed (which he didn't use).  Also, the woman that trained him is the owner and she and her fiance (?) LOVE him!!  I wish every (homeless/familyless) dog could have his life!!  The worst thing for him is that I work 6 hours a day and he is alone!!

When do I get a pedicure?????????????????

good morning everyone

I was watching CNN earlier and it seems that a Whippet named Vivy has somehow escaped her crate at the runway at JFK after competing at Westminster.  It appears that there are people looking and even a helicopter but what really annoyed me was the flippant attitude of the anchor, Miles I think- he was laughing and joking that the dog was on the lamb or maybe chasing a lamb.  He was so uncaring that this is not only a costly show animal it is also someones loving pet!!!

I hope Vivy makes it home OK - and now I am off to do something I haven't done since I was a teenager (A long time ago) I am going to write to CNN and tell them how terribly this was handled.

For those of you who are or who have read Marley & Me - I haven't even gotten to chapter 1 yet and I am choked up!!  The percieved Saint hood is alive and well at our house.

My DH has it in his mind that our last dog - St. Stoli the english springer spaniel (who passed 6 years ago) was perfect she was excellent but no saint she ate my $100.00 pair of Amalfi pumps!!  The only pair of expensive shoes I ever bought as a gift to myself for my first real Job -

Anyway she was adorable, could walk without a lead, stayed in our yard, came everywhere with us - this was before kids - and she adored my hubby she could also be a true watchdog with the house and the kids noone she didn't know would get near them...

Then comes Harley - the Flat Coat - the love of my life but while he likes my hubby and all definately my dog - doesn't have a mean or protective bone in his body!! (that we know of).  Is just a naughty boy - steals laundry, counter surfs and will only listed to a command if we are so angry our faces are turning bright red!!!  then MAYBE he will lie down.  I find him amusing husband wants to take him to the ASPCA (not really but keeps asking "Harley do you want to go to lollipop farm?  and of course big dummy wags his tail and runs to the door!!)

Anyway, just wanted to offer the similarities in the book onto chapter 1

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / 4 years old and such a whiner
« on: January 25, 2006, 03:43:22 pm »
I think I posted about this before but it is getting over whelming - Harley my 4 year old Flat Coat whines...all the time.  When I leave and the family is home with him he sits by the door and cries for hours!!  Last night when I got home from a relaxing dinner with friends I thought my husbands heart was going to explode he was so annoyed with Harley.  He also whines when I'm home if he wants a treat or needs water or wants to go out and search for squirrels.

I spoke to the trainer we used when he was younger and she suggestes a collar (which we borrowed when he ate poop) it is not a shock collar it is a vibration collar I have tried it on myself it feels like a hand buzzer.  I am supposed to tell him quiet and then hit the button - I hate to do this but it is overwhelming!!!

Any other suggestions?  Before I have to zap him???

Thanks
Randy

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Today is the 25th?
« on: January 24, 2006, 03:38:13 pm »
This is strange but I have a question - when I look at the boards the date is showing up as the 24th but today is the 25th?  Even above the search box says the date is January 24, 2006 and then the time.  I tried signing off and back on - and even a different computer and it is the same - what does yours day?

Thanks for checking
