I googled Echo when I first saw the commercial and read that she was adopted. It's neat that they did a follow up commercial.

Congrats and welcome to BPO! I'm Annie, mom to another Sadie, a rescued Lab (in my photo), and Riley, a Saint Bernard.

Oh! And if you look closely in Sadie's pics, you can see what she's been growing for the past two months or so... gray hairs! She's sporting new white eyebrows and a bit of white on her muzzle. She's not even 4 yet!

Thank you.

I don't think she's on flea/hw preventative, so I think I may try to at least put her on flea stuff. I can't put her on hw without taking her to the vet, and I don't think I can afford three dogs and two cats worth of vet bills right now... but I'm going to try to talk her people into it. I talked them into spaying her when I first moved in and that worked.

I don't keep my cats on flea stuff, because I don't want to put the chemicals on them if I don't have to. They are indoors only and with the dogs being on flea stuff and being outside only to walk, go to the park/store/etc, or play in the yard briefly, they've been fine. But if she's not on it, they could get fleas.

Her people appreciate it, though, in their own way. They brought me this expensive frozen cookie dough from the place the mom works at. I don't know why they won't just put her inside every time it's cold instead of only occasionally! I'd much prefer that!

And the cats... That's Turbo, the cream tabby, sitting in the crate, and Bevo, the dark orange tabby. These are Thomas' brothers (for those that remember Thomas). They were supposed to stay with my ex-bf originally, but they've learned to live with the dogs instead. Well, they have to live with the dog anyway. Turbo is still annoyed, and Bevo still runs. It's not ideal, but I think they are pretty happy most of the time. Turbo is alpha over the dogs, though not like Thomas. If he never ran, he'd be fine.

Pit Bull Discussions & Pictures / This is Preciosa

Hello! This is Preciosa, my neighbor's (mostly) pit mix. My chain link fence is missing the top bar on most of her side of the yard (previous owner did a bang up job of fencing-no top bar on that side, three fences along the back, and a double fence along the other side...). Anyway, she jumps over it all the time and plays with my dogs.

Several times over the first year and a half I lived here, I tried to convince her to come inside on cold nights (thankfully, not too many in Texas). She refused, even when we had an ice storm (I couldn't get her over the fence that time). She showed up on my front porch during a thunderstorm and came inside then, but that was it.

On New Year's Eve of this year, her people were shooting fireworks, and that was enough to scare her in my house. Now she loves coming in and sleeps here on freezing nights. Her people don't usually let her in the house, and although she has a dog house now-didn't have it when we had the ice storm last year-it's a bad little house. The door is almost as big as the end of the house that it's on, so all the cold gets in! I crate her when we're sleeping. She hasn't had an accident on the evenings when I've let her run around, but just in case... Plus, she tends to stare at the cats. Turbo will hit her, but Bevo usually figures she's just going to chase him and doesn't put up much of a fight and just runs. I don't want her to get any ideas!

So here are Preciosa, Sadie, and Riley. These were taken a couple of weeks ago in my yard while we were all playing outside. My nerds usually don't want their pictures taken, and Riley was determined that his 'knocking' on the door would bring someone else to the door... haha

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: I love my dog because...
« on: February 24, 2008, 10:49:19 am »
I love Sadie because she is always happy. Always. As a former roommate put it, she is goodness and happiness embodied. I love that she overcame her fear of people after her rough start to life and now loves to meet people and get love. I love that she likes to dry herself off just about as much as she likes to swim. I love her gusto and how she wags her entire body. I love her because her main goal in life is to merge with me and whatever I'm up for doing, she's happy to do. LOL I love Sadie because she guards the house and me with all the seriousness of a pack of German Shepherds. I love Sadie because she has to clean Riley's ears and eyes and her own paws like a cat. I love her because when you tell her kisses, she'll kiss your cheek, but when she decides to kiss you on her own, she's all about arms, legs, necks, etc. I love Sadie because she will lay in my spot on the bed, head on the pillow, until I tell her to move, then she'll move over beside me, head on the other pillow, and look at me with those big brown eyes.

I love Riley because he is the neediest creature and makes no apologies for it. I love him because if things don't go his way, he will grumble to tell you he doesn't approve. I love Riley because he will stand in front of me if he thinks someone is a threat and growl and bark, letting Sadie run out in front to bark and put on her show. I love Riley because he lets Sadie bite his tail and collar and hang onto him as he walks around the dog park. I love Riley because if I get up and walk 10 feet to a trash can when we're at a park, he has to follow me, just in case. I love that when you tell Riley "kisses", he puts his nose to your nose and licks/smears his mouth around your chin. I love Riley because he rides "copilot", his butt on the back seat, feet on either side of the bump behind the console, and head over the console.

I love my dogs because they greet me at their baby gate doing their little dance-Riley swaying side to side and Sadie jumping up to stand on her back feet and shaking her whole body.

My dogs hardly move at night. They usually knock out on the bed, but will move if I want them to or if they think there is not enough space. They just go to the floor then. They can leave the room, because the bedroom door is open for the cats to come and go (I don't like it, b/c I have roommates, but the cats will rip at the carpet if not). Riley has left a few times to sleep by the front door, b/c the flooring is cooler in the summer. They don't get into anything at night, though. Riley had a couple of accidents while potty training, but that's it.

During the day, they are baby-gated into my bedroom. I'm sure Riley is reliable now, though he gets so stressed when I leave that I think the routine of baby-gating them is calming. Sadie is probably reliable, but I'm not ready to try yet. She went through a stressful event that made her a bit destructive at one point, though she's very well behaved in general and doesn't act like that now, so it worries me a bit. We'll see.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Poor Zoey. You did the best you could and gave her a wonderful home. Take comfort in the fact that your sweet girl is no longer in pain.

Take care.

On the contrary, the destinction between livestock and pets is very important to this thread. Simply because other societies do not view dogs as we do doesn't make us 'right' and them 'wrong'. IF you view all animal life the same way (as say a vegetarian or vegan) and can say that is wrong to eat any animal, then I suppose you can say that those in China and other countries who eat dogs are doing something wrong. However, if you are going to try to make a distinction and say that eating dogs is wrong, but eating chicken, pigs, or deer is right or okay, then yes, it does boil down to the distinction between livestock and pets.

That said, of course I don't like that people eat dogs; however, it is a bit holier than thou for a person to say that the animals that their society eats are okay for consumption yet to say that the consumption of a different species in another society is 'wrong' unless that person is not actively participating in the consumption of any animal species. (There is probably some argument for the consumption of fish if you want to draw the line at a species fit for consumption not having a limbic system.) Saying you don't like it is one thing (opinions are different than passing moral judgement), but to say that they are 'wrong' for it is xenocentric.

Again, I don't like that they eat dogs, and of course, it's great if people want to voice their opinions. I just think that it is important to say that our Western distinction between pets and livestock is at the heart of this issue and something to consider.

My dogs are fairly young, so this is a long way off, but my next dog will likely be another rescued Lab or a Lab mix. But then, like several others have mentioned, it may just be whatever rescued dog grabs my heart at the time that I'm ready to get another animal... But knowing that there are so many Labs/Lab mixes in rescue and that those are more often the ones I get pulled in by, I bet that's what I end up with.

I just have a soft spot for them, especially black lab mixes with a little white on their chest and now, after having Sadie, the yellow ones, too. And chocolates are pretty... ;) Though, I may just have a Saint, too-a rescued one this time. Riley II and Sadie II.

I'm kidding about the names, of course. LOL

Bones and laser pointers are both great ideas. My dogs will stay occupied with bones for quite a while (especially Sadie), and Riley loves to chase the red laser pointer dot. Sadie just likes chasing Riley around. She looks right at the pointer and has it all figured out. I think she thinks I'm crazy encouraging her to chase something she can't catch. But she seems really amused by Riley's reaction to it and runs after him.
