Mixed Breed Discussion / Re: I need some help
« on: January 01, 2006, 04:04:31 pm »
We have the same problem with our aussie.  We worked on restraining her by pinning her when she gave us a hard time but she will still pitch a fit if we try to do anything while she's restrained.  One major thing that helps is that you stay calm, assertive and be the alpha.  Also exercise him to the point of exhaustion before you try to work on his issues, so hopefully he can have a positive experience and get over his problems.  And if your afraid of being bitten muzzle him in situations he gets nippy.  Also exercise in general would be good for his disposition.

I hope this helps some.  Good luck and I hope it works.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: How about compulsory spay/neuter?
« on: December 31, 2005, 02:24:19 pm »
Lets face it whats the real cost of a neuter?? A 5 minute surgery should not cost over 200.00, as it does at many vets around me. If big brother wants to spend our money on a program for pets let them pick up say 50% of the cost if the vets want to scream they will be losing to much otherwise.

The reason why they're over 200 is the mandatory pre-anesthesia bloodwork most clinics do.  It takes more than five minutes because of the time it takes to knock the dog out and hook them to the monitors.  So you pay for the vet's time and the time of whoever assists. Also your paying for the vet tech that watches your dog as they come out of it and for the care your dog requires while there.

Also pet insurance will pay 80% generally at least they did for Kali.

We still have to explain to Kali why her tree is going to need to leave, it should be interesting.

Kali picked out her first Christmas tree at a local tree farm and was very happy when we put it in our dining room (which she isn't allowed into unsupervised).  But later that week when we decorated it she had threw a hissy fit because we dared to decorate her tree, so she pulled a couple of ornament off so be glad you weren't putting drool covered ones back on your tree.

PS tinsel can cause intestinal blockages so it's generally better to just not use it so you avoid surgeries

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Insurance
« on: December 31, 2005, 01:36:25 pm »
I haven't heard anything about it and my mother works at a vet's office and they would probably hear about it.  Kali has pet insurance and it is a good deal for emergencies, vaccinations, and spays although our vet gives us everything at cost because my mother works there.

I think I saw somewhere that you can send in a pic of your dog or kid or whatever you want on the throw or pillow and get it made after the pic.

Petco has an advertisement for it and I think most photo places and some catalogs can do various items with pet photos.  My cousin's company makes a catalog that specializes in stuff like that, I'll have to find out the name of it.

Since there are also a number of you guys that have horses too, you should watch out for them i know mine get spooked and a friend's horse got an ulcer and coliced due to some fireworks.  So you should keep and eye on all of your pets.  I'm sorry about your Chow though PupDaddy and I hope you get the jerks responsible.

I have a cousin who is a devil child and used to chase our irish setter as a puppy.  Sammy never liked little kids after that.  But Kali and Lacey have gotten the brat back.  Kali jumped on her and slobbered all over her and Lacey growls and barks at her every time she comes over so just think of it as karma it'll come back to her in the end.
PS She now refuses to come to our house...

Zoey looks just like Kali's best buddy Katy.  We're in Southeastern CT our town is right between the casinos.  Kali has two Saints she loves to play with that belong to my mom's boss, who is our vet.  I'll have to post some pics of them sometime.

If you look at the second picture you can see how she toes out.  It will probably lead to arthritis because it puts more pressure on the ankle joints.  Our vet was afraid it was a condition where the growth plates stop growing on one of the lower bones while the growth plate on the other lower bone doesn't, which is why we had to send x-rays to Tufts but luckily it's just bad conformation that's best left alone.
She loves soccer and it took about 5 seconds when she first started playing to realize that if she picks it up you can't kick it away from her.  She also learned how to dribble the ball and to stop it.  She barks until you take her out to play or will stare at the bin where we keep the ball until we give in and play.

Hi everyone,

We're Kali's humans (yes we are relegated to the ones being owned).  I just found this site one day in my search for newfie bibs because we've reached the point where Kali needs to provide a towel.  She's eleven months old and has everyone in her house wrapped around her paw.  She's loving the cold weather but misses her kiddy pool and sprinklers.  She does have some conformation issues in her front legs but the opinion from Tufts is that surgery would make it worse, so we're hoping it'll get better not worse as she finishes growing.  She has the best personality though.  I'll try to find some more recent pictures to post.  She's gotten a lot bigger since the picture we have on now.
