We started Lucah on the choker and he responded well, but when he wanted to pull there just wasn't any stopping him.  We also noticed that he was irritating the front of his neck and that worried us.  So we went out and bought the martingale.  We have used it for over a month now and it seems to work fairly well.  We find he is still pulling, but not as much. 

They say the advantage of the martingale is that it distributes the pressure more evenly, this is true, but we are still getting the pull.  Lucah will pull to the point he is weezing.  Our next step will likely be the pinch collar.  A lot of people say that pulling becomes less of an issue and since my wife weighs about 110 lbs I think she will appreciate that.

So overall, I think the martingale is better than the choke, but I think the pinch might work better overall as a training aid...of course, what ever works best for you is the best answer.

We wanted a new puppy because we thought it would be easier to raise.  Rescues can come wth emotional issues that aren't apparent right off.  I know that a new puppy could have issues, but we thought it would be somewhat easier.  Plus, we loved the breed and it characteristic s.

We do, however, want to rescue when the time is right for an addition to our family.  We went to the shelter on Saturday and saw so many beautiful dogs that need homes, so we know rescuing needs to happen.  Plus rescues come to you with all the shots and fixed so you save a lot of money.

About the price...the funny thing was we found puppies for half of what we paid for Lucah, but for some reason we just didn't feel like those dogs would be a good fit for us.  But the day we met Lucah we knew he was coming home with us. Lucah's breeder didn't have a pet vs. show price.  She felt that all her puppies could have been shown and did an average price for all of them.  Basically we paid towards the top of the scale for Lucah...but he was worth it.

Since Lucah is done with his crate training we need to get him a good bed. Any suggestions?

We would like to get something that will last for a while, so big is best...but we don't want to break the bank on this one.  I know that in this great forum we have so many people we so many dogs...there should be someone in here that knows of a "deal" or a "great find".

Our trainer has told us that if this becomes an issue (it hasn't yet) then you can feed the dog by hand.  This way they know that hands mean food and that biting them will get them no food.  I would definately keep the kids away while he chews a bone.

A thing we also did with Lucah was to always stop him mid-meal and take his food aways.  He would then have to SIT before he got it back.  Now we have it so that if we say "Off!" he backs away from his bowl and sits without us touching him at all.  Practice and patience is what it takes...as I am sure you already know.

We loved Dog Beach in Huntington so much we took him back yesterday.  There we saw Gus a big apricot mastiff that is real sweet.  Gus and Lucah seem to get along, in one picture below it looks like he is telling him a secret.

Lucah has graduated from Obedience Class!  So I guess this means he is trained, right? 

Well not so much.  He is a really good boy and I have never had a dog that was so obedient, but he still needs a lot of work.  Just repetition and keeping his mind growing. 

For anyone who is interested in classes just realize it is not so much about the dog, but more about you dealing with the dog.  It seems like the dogs are willing to learn you just have to give them something to learn.  So be prepared to repeat everything a million times...but get ready to feel really great with after the millionth time they get it right.

When we got Lucah from the breeder he didn't pee inside for 3 days.  We thought he was a genius and that housebreaking was done.  Well later that week he just started leaking like a waterhose so we started to watch him like hawks.

I know its frustrating when you pooch doesn't perform to the level you know they can...but you just have to stick with it and have a good sense of humor about the whole thing.

Lucah is about 21 weeks and only now is he out of his crate and into a
pin-like area we have for him.  He doesn't get full run of the house yet, but we can definately trust him.  I can even bring him to work and he just lays under the desk until I take him out an then he goes.  I still don't consider him housebroken though.

I wish I could give you a secret, but it really is just consistend diligence and a schedule. You almost need to make taking her out a mindless act like sneezing.  It is just something you always do no matter what. 

I didn't see but are you crating?  That helps a ton. I feel it is faster than WEE Pads or anything else.  I am sure you know about puppies and keeping their dens clean, but it really does help. 

Just stay confindent and know that eventually she will get it.

You know I have to change what I said before to: you can only tell her what the financial implications will be and give your opinion, but don't push, don't argue.  She will do what she wants and someone will hopefully put those pups in good homes some day.

This is exactly what we need in the world, more pit puppies that are gonna get a  bad rep. because they weren't raised to have good temperments.

Here's what you do...as soon as the puppies are born you break in and take them to the nearest Pitt rescue in your area.  Cut out the middle man and just take them there.

Seriously...I don't advocate theft, but this is just not gonna work.  I live in an apartment with Lucah and my wife, we picked the OEM breed because we knew that they like to be indoors and need minimal excercise.  We are still going to buy a house for him, but we knew that other breeds just wouldn't make it in an apartment with only a small yard.  Pitts need space and to run, this is just a bad idea.

Suggesting for this woman to "read" things probably won't work.  She doesn't seem like a "reader".  If she was she would know what could happen if she does this.
