Newfoundland Discussions / its official...any advice?
« on: August 20, 2006, 05:57:36 am »
we paid the (unrefundable) deposit last night for the newf puppy, so its official, she is MINE! yay! she gets to come home in about 2 weeks. a little less, i think. my golden retriever is on solid gold for large breed dogs. and i am planning on starting the puppy on that as well. i already have a crate left over from my retriever, which i am going to use until she outgrows it, which i am sure will be sooner than i think, lol. lots of toys and things to chew on, i know. im still looking for a really cute, girlie-girl collar for her. and of couse, an i.d tag, is a must. i already have baby gates. a couple days ago i ordered a "furminator" on ebay. which i have heard great things about.
  anything else i am missing?
also, as far as names...right now i am thinking Lola or Sophie. does anyone else have any suggestions? i think i am just going to have to see her in person and see her personality before i decide on a final name, but i am open to suggestions!
 i am so freakin' excited!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / I cannot believe it!!!
« on: August 19, 2006, 03:17:58 pm »
i bought a Gentle Leader walk harness for my 8 month old Golden,Cooper last night (Hes been having major issues walking nicely!), and i just tried it out. and it works AMAZINGLY!!! as soon as i started walking him with the harness on, he was a completly different dog. if he would try to pull, it was obvious he didnt like how it felt and he stopped imediately. it was wonderul. i havent liked walking him for a while because he pretty much just dragged me around whereever he wanted, and now i can actually enjoy a nice walk with him. we should have gotten the Gentle Leader a long time ago! i always thought about trying one but figured it wouldnt work like it does! it is unbelievable!
it was definitely 30 bucks well spent! coopers gonna be happy too because hes gonna get to go on a lot more walks now! ;D

okay, well, i posted a couple of days ago that in 2 weeks i will be bringing home my very own black female newfie. there is a man who lives nearby that owns a newf and tonight while outside with my golden retriever he and his newf happend to walk by. my husband and i, who have spoken with him before, went over and said hello and told him we are getting a newf. we talked for a few minutes and asked him a couple questions. he told me that newf puppies are very hyper for the first 2 years of their life and he also kind of implied that a newf and a golden retriever wouldnt be a good combo.
so...now im getting a little worried. what do you guys think? i thought a golden and a newf would be good together. my golden is only 8 months but hes very calm in the house. he only gets crazy when people come over (and we are trying to break him of that!).
  any thoughts?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / advice about second dog
« on: August 17, 2006, 05:53:36 am »
okay, well, i posted a couple days ago that in a couple weeks i will be bringing home my very own newfie puppy! i am very excited, of course. i already have an 8 month old golden retriever. i am sure they will be the best of friends. any advice though about adding a second dog to the house? ive never had 2 dogs before. my golden, cooper sleeps in a huge walk in closet in our bedroom at night, with the door open and a baby gate up. i am planning on crating the new puppy and putting the crate right by our bed. or should i have the crate where they can see each other? somebody reccommended that i take cooper somewhere where he feels like its not his territory and introduce the new puppy there and then take them home together. supposedly this would make cooper feel like hes the one who decided to take her home (or so i was told), but how important is it that i do that? my golden is not jealous or territorial at all. i think he would be perfectly fine if i just brought the dog into the backyard and let them play. what do you all think?
any more advice or words or wisdom for me? things that you didnt know but wish you knew before getting a second dog?
 thanks,
 Leah

a newf puppy, that is! i found a breeder nearby who currently has 6 week old puppies. shes been breeding for 10 plus years. she has a 2 year guarantee on all her pups. the parents are all hip/heart certified. and the price for her pups are more than reasonable. im still in the process of talking to hubby about it. but if all goes well, in a couple weeks i will be bringing home a newf puppy! i would be getting a black, female. i am already so excited!!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / I am SOOOO tempted...
« on: June 27, 2006, 02:51:15 pm »
i found this little sweetie pie on pet finder.
http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=6503929
she is in a humane society a couple of hours from where i am. her adoption fee is only $35, plus the cost of being spayed. i talked to hubby about getting her. he seems open to the idea, though hes been less than sure about getting a second pup lately...
she is so beautiful. she kinda looks like a newf pup, but shes a st bernard-lab mix.
i want her, i want her, i want her...
i called the humane society where she is and there is a couple of this litter left.
what do you guys think? (this is the part when everyone tells me that i should definitely adopt this little smooshy face, and that i would be an idiot not to...)
i have a 6 month golden retriever and he definitly needs a sister to play with right???
i'll let you guys know...

does anyone here use them, and if so, how are they? we have a fully fenced in back yard but are in the middle of redoing a lot of it. we dug the old patio out and are going to put in a new one, but its taking longer than we expected. so for now, we have a big mud pit because it keeps raining. our front yard is not fenced in. when its too rainy and wet to put our golden, cooper, in the back, we hook him on his long leash in the front (supervised, of course), but he always gets tangled around bushes and everything so its a real pain the a$$. so, i was wondering if an invisble fence for our front would be a good option. i realize the limitations of them. they dont keep other dogs out, ect. but thats okay because when cooper is out, we will be out with him. i guess my main question is, are invisble fences humane? i dont know much about them. i was going to start doing some research but thought i would start here.
so, what can you guys tell me about them? are they good or bad?

okay, well, i was on the computer earlier and was looking on petfinder (again!lol) and i came across a doberman female named piper. she is 2 years old, and beautiful. in her profile it say shes good with other dogs, and cats and kids, and loves to give kisses.
i already have a 5 mo old golden retriever. we have been wanting to get a playmate for him. we looked at some newfoundland pups a couple weeks ago and they were adorable and i absolutely fell in love with them, but i am a little unsure of whether i really want to get a puppy and have to go thru potty training all over again. my golden, cooper, is now pretty much all the way potty trained, thank god.
i am pretty new to dobermans, just came across this girl on petfinder and thought she was beautiful and sounded great. and i love the thought of our next dog being a rescue.
what can you guys tell me about dobermans? i know they can be pretty protective and are generally weary of strangers, right? can someone give me some more info?
how would a golden and a doberman be together? are they too different?
  any info would be great!!!
 thanks,
 Leah

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / going boating...
« on: May 26, 2006, 12:34:26 pm »
okay, well, tomorrow hubby and i are going boating with my sister and her hubby. we are bringing along our 5 mo old golden retriever, cooper. this will be his first time, so i am a bit nervous about taking him. we will of course have a life jacket for him, and will take along plenty of water. sisters hubby is putting down some carpet that came with the boat so cooper doesnt slide around. and we will put down the canopy so cooper will have some shade. also, plenty of toys to keep him happy.
any other things i should bring along?
cooper hasnt been in water before (except a baby pool) so i am a little anxious to see how he will react. we are going to start out in some shallow water and hopefully cooper will follow everyone else into it. i know not to force him into it, dont want to traumatize him.
how did your guys dogs react the first time they went to the lake/ocean/pool?

okay, well, i took my puppy cooper in to the vet today and he had his rabies shot and, i think, his distemper(sp?)
shot. he then ended up having horrible diarrhea all day and he just now threw up. so, im wondering is it maybe the shots that made him sick? or probably something else? just wondering if anyone else's dog has had a similiar experience after getting shots. oh, and he also had his first heartworm pill today, so, i dont know, could that be it?
if anyone has any ideas and has had any similiar experiences i would appreciate your input.
 thanks, Lulu

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / toothe brushing???
« on: May 09, 2006, 01:39:17 am »
okay, i want to know how all of you guys manage to brush your dogs teethe. my golden, cooper, is 5 months old and we started brushing his teethe from the time we first got him. when he was really little even though he hated it, we could hold him and still get it done. now, hes getting big enough where it is all but impossible to hold him down and brush his teethe. my husband or i try to hold him while the other brushes but it is not working! he is in the process of losing his baby teethe so im sure that makes his mouth a lot more sensive but is it still okay to brush his teethe even though hes losing them? and HOW do i do it? how do you guys get your big paws to let you brush their teethe???
  thanks,
  :) Lulu

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / okay newfie people...
« on: May 07, 2006, 11:49:02 am »
i need some of your valuable insight. my husband and i currently have a golden retriever. his name is cooper and he is 5 months old now and doing great. we have been talking about getting a playmate for cooper. i have fallen in love with newfoundlands from what i have read about them. we were planning on waiting until cooper is a bit older to get a second puppy, BUT i just found a newfie breeder nearby. after talking to her on the phone, she sounds great so far. her dogs have ofa and heart certifications . the puppies she has are 3 weeks old. i have an appointment to go see them friday evening.
what i need to know is, do you think a newfie and a golden retriever would be a good match? and also, i have cats so how are newfies with cats? i have read that they do fine with cats but i want to hear it from people who have newfs and cats. i know they are very large dogs, and they drool and shed --all that is fine by me. anything else i need to know? any advice? also, i know cooper is still young. he'd be 6 + months old by the time the newf puppy would be ready to come home but is that still too young to bring in another puppy? i have heard that if you raise 2 puppies together they bond with each other more than they do with you. but would that still be true even since cooper is an older puppy? are newfs that kind of dogs that follow you around all the time or the kind that is more independent?
anything and everything you guys can tell me would be great!!!
 thanks,
  Lulu

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / going boating?
« on: April 16, 2006, 07:41:27 am »
well, cooper, my golden retriever just turned 16 weeks last Friday. my sister and her husband have a boat and we are going to go out boating with them in a couple of weeks. my question is, do you all think it is okay to take cooper baoting/swimming already? he hasnt really been around water at all but we are going to go buy him a little baby pool to help get him used to water. if we took him to the lake with us, we would slowly introduce him into the water and of course he would have a puppy life vest on. does that all sound alright? hes a golden so he should love water but i have never taken a dog swimming before so i want to make sure i do everything right.
  thanks,
