Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: the kitties I caught
« on: November 25, 2006, 12:43:31 am »
They sure are cute!  How do you guys trap feral cats humanely?  Then what?  Can they spay them that wild?  We have a female cat who keeps having kittens in our barn.  Katie killed a bunch of them but there are still at least 4 left (I think there have been a few litters).  We feed them but I have never been able to get very close.

He really is a cutie!  Good luck!

Carter won't touch anything that is raw.  He really didn't care for the satin balls which everyone raves that their dogs love.  After I cooked the stuff, he loved it.  Give him a bone and he looks at you like you're trying to kill him.  He's just NOT a raw eater.  I think that if you've got a dog that's never tried stuff like that from puppyhood, it might be more difficult to start feeding raw when they are older.  I'm not touching the brand issue on foods.  You just have to go with one that works for you, your dog and your budget.

Great Dane Discussions / Re: I really want to adopt him - whadda ya think?
« on: November 22, 2006, 07:33:41 am »
No Offense taken, but I really wish they could ease off the rule.  I would go up and get him - no problem and we have a Dane rescue that will come out and do home inspections. Oh well - maybe one will pop up around here.  Although he is such a cutie!!!

Maybe the answer is to go through your local rescue and get all set up to adopt, then if he's still available, maybe the rescue folks can swap notes and either accept or deny.  I know with our local Pyr group, most available dogs never get listed on the web.  They have enough waiting homes that dogs are usually matched as they come in.  Another option would be to foster and perhaps meet your soul mate that way ;)  There are a lot of ways to meet the dog of your dreams.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: chaining laws
« on: November 21, 2006, 08:24:56 am »
I think the biggest problem is dogs that are chained, unsocialized, and unsupervised.
In all of the campgrounds that we have been to they require that dogs be leashed or chained at all times, in or out of your campsite. I agree with that, too many strangers, too many dogs, unfamilar area... But they also require that the dog be attended by an adult at all times, which I also agree with. It is also the only time my pampered house pooches are ever tied out or chained.
I think it is a matter of how you were raised, where you live, and what your dog is intended for, whether you think this is right or wrong.
I have plenty of relatives that think that dogs are livestock and they need to be chained outside unless they are doing another job-Like livestock guarding or herding.
These are the same folk that will not eat or sleep in my house because I live with dogs. To them it is like I am living with a cow in my living room.
Stella

Yes, but how often do you see a cow tied out to a chain?  It does happen, but it is rare.  I do understand that a chain can be helpful in certain situations, but I REALLY can't understand the mentality of most "chainers" who put a dog out on a chain and it lives its entire life out there.  We have neighbors like that and I just don't get it.  What is the point?  Protection?  How will it protect you out there on the chain?  Those dogs bark all the time so I can't believe that they would react any time the dogs bark.  This is one of the mysteries of life to me.

Can you relate what is going on when he whines?  My Carter is a HUGE whiner!  He whines when he's happy, when he wants a walk, when he wants to be fed...  He's the first whiny dog I've ever had, Pyr or otherwise. Carter's whine is usually accompanied by a tail wag so he's mostly just wanting something, not upset.

Dude,
Jake here- I had one of those horrible collars this time last year- had to have stitches in the paw. Well I figured out how to get mom to take it off. Scoop up the cat with the collar and take her the cat. Cat will freak, so run fast, very fast thru the house until you find mom- then give her the cat. By this time cat will be a bit of a spitting fuzz ball and all claws will be aimed at mom ( or what ever human you find first) It worked for me.

ROFLOL!!!!!!!!!  (Wipe tears of laughter away so I can see to type)  Carter used his as a plate to eat so I'm not sure he'd be good for any help to Magic  ::)  We did the cervical collar for Eider's recent snip and it worked great ;)  He's been very good though so he really only wore the collar for 2 days.

What a good boy!  That is so awesome that he's protecting you already!  Carter has really started to surprise me with his aggressive stance when we're out walking and he doesn't like the look of something.  I doubt he'd actually do anything but he sure looks and sounds like he would.  He's never done more than jump on something and slobber but boy can he act!

Izzy is doing great with his new name. He has even adapted to all the variations- Iz, Izzly, Izzle, Izzle my Nizzle, etc. He really has settled in so well here that it is astounding!

Awwwww!  I'm so glad to hear that it worked out so well!  He's a handsome fella!

Oh but I'm sure if Linus could talk he would say that he fell on her and never meant to snuggle up to a dog.....   ;) ;)

Sounds quite plausible to me!  Those pics are adorable!

I think you guys are FORCING me to go get pictues!  There seems to be a running theme here!  ;D ;D ;D

I can't WAIT to go see them, but I really think I should wait until they have their first shots.  I took Cowboy in for his check-up to be re-certified for Therapy Dogs International and there were puppies in the vets office with parvo. :(

I would just feel awful if anything happened to them!

I PROMISE, P R O M I S E  to go as soon as it's safe for them  to be with outsiders!!!

Definitely be safe!  Yikes!  Just the thought of parvo gives me the shudders!
