Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Lady Update

She's doing real well.  depending on who you ask.  She's obviously the authority now.  Yesterday she decided she was good enough to launch herself from the floor into the bed.  She's not supposed to do that...but you can't really stop her when in about 1.2 seconds a 105 Rott leaps into the air.  :)

LOL!  I love how the vets hand down these instructions but don't give you any ideas on how you're actually supposed to make it happen.  How's her appetite?  She looks like she really enjoyed her time as the ruling queen!

Grace is GORGEOUS and she's gotten so big!  Great pic!  I too am thankful for my beasts.  Eider had the big snip this week and was gone for a day.  It was soooooo dull around here with the little brat gone!  It really makes you appreciate them when they are gone for a while.

Hmmmmm. A house full of dogs vs a house full of 8 yer old girls...
I know which one would be my choice. Seriously though, for now you are right to keep them apart. Maybe with a bit of patience and distance you can eventually start a desensitizatio n program on the little princess and turn her into a convert. My son's girlfriend was terrified of my dogs when she started coming around at 16. Now at 19 she is in college to become a vet tech and spends more toime snuggling with the dogs than my son. My diabolical plan worked well...
BWAHHHHHHHaaaa aaaaahhhhhhaaa a
Stella

Bwahaha!!!  You da woman!!!!!  Brilliant!!

Poor Harley!  We've had a lot of kids who are afraid of dogs here too.  I just put up the child gates and keep dogs in one room, kids in the others.  Usually within a few hours they are all together.  All the kids are actually drawn to Carter (and Thor before him).  The Pyrs look like teddy bears and the kids just want to hug them.

I have convinced DH to go with me to look, though!!!  He's stronger than I am  ;)

Bwahahah!!! That way if he caves, it is his fault.  You're good!!!!!!!!!  I can never count on DH to say no.  He's worse than I am about having a bazillion dogs!  He was asking today already if we need another  :o

Here's a good thread on Gentle Leaders.  I think the Halti looks similar, though I have not researched enough to know for sure.

I've had excellent results with the GL on one dog and a terrible response from another.  It really depends on the dog and IMO should only be used until you've finished the training.  The GL worked well with Carter because he is deaf and he had never been leash trained.  That is challenging to start at 2 yrs of age with a large breed.  He accepted it well and I was careful not to let him pull too hard too quickly.  Now I rarely use it on him because he has learned that the pull on the neck means that he needs to pay attention.  Eider is a little more challenging.  He hated the GL so we went with a prong collar.  He should know by now how to walk on the leash but he's so determined to stay ahead of Carter that he pulls quite a bit.  He wants to be boss but thinks he has to work hard at it because Carter is so much bigger.  ::)  Anyway, I'm making a long story longer.  The idea to try some of these out in the store is excellent.  Walk around the store a bit with one on before you buy or at least leave the tags on when you buy it in case you want to bring it back.  We did that with the prong collar for Eider and ended up taking it back for a bigger one.  The large is just barely big enough for Eider so we got an extra large and took out a few prongs because he's still young.  I'd imagine you'd need lots of extra prongs for a real extra large dog.

FAQs about puppies / Re: how to pick a puppy?
« on: November 10, 2006, 07:32:25 am »
Ask the breeder about the individual temperaments.  They will likely know which pup is the wild thing, which one is laid back, which is dominant, etc.

This link shows some things to think about and possible tests to do with the pups.  Imagine what your ideal adult dog is and look for those traits in the pup.  Good luck and have fun!

I'm so sorry things didn't work out with her!  I think you are wise to return her quickly though.  If you've got kids in the home and one of them gets between her and Bray, you'll never forgive yourself.   :'(

Prednisone actually suppresses your immune system.  It is used for a lot of things but primarily to suppress immunity in people who have had organ transplants, to reduce allergic reactions in severe allergy situations and as an anti-inflamatory.  It does wind you up pretty good on the higher doses but then you feel really tired as you drop down.  The bathroom issue is just one of many lovely side effects.  It can also increase aggression and make you feel really hot.
