General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Barry Manilow?
« on: March 22, 2006, 08:52:43 pm »
So Sadie and I love to watch American Idol together. She's very musical. In my humble opinion, the "Let's Go Out and Do a Potty" song is just WAITING to hit the charts ;) Anyway, we were watching tonight and Barry Manilow came on. Now I'm sort of indifferent about Barry so I'm thinking, perfect opportunity to avoid a puddle on the rug and go out for a potty. I sang the song and everything! Sadie on the other hand is apparently Barry's biggest fan. She would not BUDGE from in front of the TV. She was cocking her head to the side as he sang "Love is a Many Splendored Thing". The thing that kills me is, all those good looking guys on that show and she likes Barry Manilow?

Why is my dog such a wierdo?

This is Sadie and her "special friend" from our puppy class. These two are hysterical together. The other big puppies in the class are way too hyper for Miss Sadie and little Willy so they cling to each other. So she outweighs him by a "few" pounds ;D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / My baby is growing up :(
« on: March 21, 2006, 08:57:22 am »
Ok, I realize that I'm being a bit ridiculous but I'm all teary so I thought I'd share. Last week Sadie had a big growth spurt. I took her to pick out a big girl collar and it's a good thing because this Saturday when I went to put her cute little baby collar on, it didn't fit anymore. Then I almost completely threw out my back trying to carry her down the stairs (she still won't do the ones outside). I knew she wouldn't be little for long, but as an overly emotional woman, I did cry a little bit. Don't laugh! I just keep remembering going to pick her out of the litter when she was only 4 weeks old and then going to pick out all her 'girly' things. Her little pink collar with the pearls on it, her Barbie toys, her little pink bowls. She's outgrown almost everything in just a couple of months. She's still just a baby, but she's not little anymore and I'm a little sad. I miss being able to scoop her up and snuggle her. Now I need a forklift! So I'm putting all the baby stuff in a box so I can always look back and remember how tiny she was when she came into my life.

On a side note, her behavior is also more "grown up". She's doing amazing at obedience class and she is listening to me so much better. I love my (not so little) baby girl so much I can't stand it sometimes.

I think I must be PMSing or something. I can't stop crying this week.

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / LOL, Big Bad Sadie
« on: March 13, 2006, 02:29:37 pm »
I don't know if I should really laugh at this but those of you who met my little Spitfire yesterday will appreciate this ;)

So I went home at lunch to walk Miss Sadie today as usual. We're out walking and there's a whole mess of construction workers working on my neighbors place. They were being pretty obnoxious as far as comments. Although, I have to admit it must be a pretty funny sight seeing a woman in a business suit walking a Newf in heels. So Sadie turns around and looks at me like "No worries Momma, I got this". She gets directly in front of me and stands with her legs totally outstretched, puffs up her (nonexistent) chest and just STARES these guys down. She didn't growl or anything, I don't think she was being aggressive, she just stood there. This one guy says to me "Is that an attack dog?" I couldn't help but laugh. Sadie loves everyone. I don't think I've ever seen her NOT wag her tail and want to say hello to someone...unti l today. But they turned around and went right back to work and I swear to God she stuck her nose up and walked away. I don't think she knows she's still little, and I didn't have the heart to tell her she isn't scary so I just let her think she's big and bad ;D

Does this look like an attack dog to you?

Newfoundland Discussions / OK, so I'm "Mean Mommy"
« on: March 10, 2006, 10:14:21 pm »
So I've been avoiding writing this because I feel SO bad about it but it's time to fess up. I took Sadie to the vet on Tuesday because of her potty issues. She had an appt. this week anyway for shot updates so I just called them to bump it up. Her # 2's didn't look right to me - and not just because they were all over my rug. So it turns out, she was running a fever - poor baby! Nothing showed up in the stool sample they ran but the vet said that she may have caught a bug or eaten something icky and she was pretty sure that's why she was going so much in the house. She has to go back tomorrow because they couldn't give her her rabies shot with her fever. They sent her home on a mild antibiotic and a bland diet and she hasn't had any accidents since then. She actually scratched the door to go outside this morning. I feel SO guilty and just BAD for being so mad at her and so frustrated! Of course, none of this excuses the other obnoxious behaviors but that seems to be getting WAY better with our extra training time and more exercise. Although she's definitely still a little punk :)

So she wasn't being bad after all. She wasn't feeling good. And I'm just a big fat "Mean Mommy". I felt like such a jerk for being so mad at her.

Games & Jokes / Heaven
« on: March 08, 2006, 01:21:56 pm »
This is cute :)

HEAVEN?

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was just enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying and that his dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while they came to a high white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate between the arches that looked like mother of pearl, and that the street that led beyond the gate looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
"Of course, sir. Come right in and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my dog come in too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, the man came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me" he called to the reader, "Do you have any water?"
"Yes, there's a pump right over there." The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate and, sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man, who was standing by then, waiting for them. "What do you call this place?" he asked.
"This is heaven," was the answer.
"Well, that's confusing," he said, "the man down the road said that was heaven too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the street of gold and the pearly gates? That's h*ll."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the people who would leave their dogs behind......."

I'm really sorry to keep doing this. I feel like I have nothing to add to this great place except question after question BUT bear with me please?

Sadie has been having an absolutely horrific couple of days behavior wise. I don't know what to do with her. She's forgotten everything we've learned about potty training. She'll come in from outside and go on the floor. She'll go in her crate. She gives me no indication that she needs to go out - which at 4 months, I know is asking a lot but she was doing SO well. She's jumping up on the counters and tables, she's biting again (we nipped that in the bud a few weeks ago). And then when I tell her no, she talks back to me and barks her head off. I give her 30 second timeouts and she acts like I've just savagely beaten her.

I feel like I want to kill her sometimes I get so frustrated - not really of course but you know what I mean. I've been nothing but consistent with her and I feel like I'm getting nowhere. Actually it's worse than getting nowhere, it's like we're moving backwards. I love my dog and I want to have a great life with her but right now I'm really really really frustrated. She is driving me nuts and I don't want to be frustrated with her. I love her and I want our time together to be fun. I feel like all I do all day is tell her "No". Help please? Could it be separation anxiety? It's not like she's ever alone for very long, I go home every day at lunch and spend time with her. I really don't know what to do. Anyone?

Newfoundland Pictures / Bad Furkids

These two are too much. Came home last night and Miss Maggie the Cat was sitting on the kitchen table (where she knows she's not supposed to be) and didn't make even the slightest move to get off. Notice that the paws are crossed just so. Then Sadie kept stealing the remote control. Bad kiddos ;D

Here are some (belated) pictures of Sadie in the snow. The last couple are of her "helping" me shovel the porch off. Then there's one of her and Miss Maggie staring at each other through the window. Sorry I'm so slow getting pictures up. I think I've got the hang of it now though ;D

...once you start singing songs about poop in a baby voice?

I think I may have gone round the bend  :-\

You take your dog out for a walk and while you're cleaning up their "mess" they wander over to a bush and come back with an empty "40" bottle.

How she carried that thing with her little mouth, I don't know.

Yeah...I need to move.  :-\

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Easy?
« on: February 14, 2006, 12:58:39 am »
Hello everyone,

Surprise! Another question from the newbie!

Sadie is doing really well. She's healthy and happy. BUT she is a puppy and she can get really rowdy. Not a problem for me but a big problem for kitty Gus Gus who just had major surgery. He blocked again after surgery #1 and had to have what was basically a sex change operation - NO FUN! He's been home since this weekend and he's doing ok, the problem is that Sadie adores him and she just wants to play with him but of course he's still really uncomfortable and cranky. He wants to play with her too, but she's just too rough with him. I hate to scold her for just being a normal puppy so I've been trying to teach her "Easy" without much success. Any tips on this one? We start obedience classes in a few weeks, I just thought if any people would have a solution, it would be you guys. I hate separating them because none of them like it. They do really like each other, it's just she's getting so big and she's so rough. Any ideas?

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Accidents in the crate? Help
« on: January 31, 2006, 03:52:48 pm »
Surprise! I have another question. Sorry to keep posting question after question.

Sadie has had accidents in her crate for the last two days. She's only done that once before and that was her first night home. I know it must be because her routine has been disrupted because of Gus being sick, but I don't really understand it. I've been doing the best I can to make up for the fact that she needs to stay in the kitchen while he recovers. We've done all kinds of trips to PetSmart and Petco and any other place that allows dogs. Plus she's had playdates with a couple of my neighbors dogs. I know it's not ideal right now, but I'm making up for it. I don't understand why she's doing that and I don't know how to stop her from doing it because I never see her do it. She went once last night overnight and once when I left for work today. I found the mess at lunchtime.

And the other thing is that she's so loud. She barks non-stop when she wants something that I won't give her. Like people food. I have tried ignoring her, I've tried telling her no.

What do I do to make her stop? I know she's probably acting out because there's tension in the house, but if anyone has any pointers, I would really appreciate it. I am having trouble dealing all by myself with a sick kitty and a problem puppy. Help?

We've discovered the wonderful world of Kong stuffers:-) Hope none of you will tell me it's bad for her since it's the only thing that keeps her quiet long enough for me to hang out with my kitty and make sure he's ok. I'm about to write the makers of it a huge thank you letter.
I am LOVING this stuff ;D

In other news Gus is still very uncomfortable and miserable in general, HOWEVER, he is eating much better and he just now started playing with his little mouse with Maggie. Things are lookin' up over here!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Giant Golden Retrievers?
« on: January 29, 2006, 12:19:04 am »
Saw two ENORMOUS Goldens today at Petsmart with Sadie. One was the same age as Sadie and he absolutely towered over her, and she's a big puppy! The other was an adult boy and he had to have been 100 pounds. He was HUGE! I grew up with Goldens and we've had some big ones. My parents have one now that's pretty big for the breed but he's a midget compared to these guys. At Sadie's age I could still pick him up with one hand. Have they started breeding Goldens for size now? What's going on with this breed? Anyone know?
