We have been very busy with Cirra's Dog Scout Troop this past year!!!  Here are a few pictures from this year's Christmas Parade and a Downtown Family Festival.  We gave out "Safety Around Dogs" actvity books on the parade route and taught children how to greet dogs at the festival.

Big Dogs with Jobs / Children Readng to Dogs - Cirra's Book Bags
« on: December 21, 2008, 05:10:15 am »
We have started a Children Reading to Cirra Program at an elementary school in our area.  Five classes are involved - kindergarten, two first grades, second grade and third grade.  The kindergarten class is large with twenty three children and Cirra and I visit them as a group.  As a group the kids read the "morning message", a large poster type book and sometimes sing a song.  Students from the other grades come to Cirra to read with her.

In order to encourage reading at home we put together six Cirra Book Bags.  One for each class and two for the kindergarten.  The students take turns bringing the bags home and reading to "Cirra".  Each bag has "Cirra" - a stuffed Great Pyrenees puppy and books.  The teachers choose appropriate books.  I had someone make the Pyr puppies, used small LL Bean tote bags and put name card plates inside.  I printed out several name cards for each student with the school name, address and telephone number.  The students can write and/or draw pictures about the books they are reading.  I did print out a few pages for the children for writing or drawing:  a silhouette of Cirra,  a silhouette with lines inside and pages with Great Pyrenees rubber stamps the top - with and without lines.  The children can keep a log of the books that they read.  There are several options for using the bags to encourage reading.

One student told his mom that he would be bringing Cirra home.  His mom was glad that her son would be bringing home the "Cirra" in the book bag.

We have provided bookmarks for each student with "Thank You for Reading with Cirra" on the front and a sticker with Cirra's face.  The students get to chose a sticker for their bookmarks every time they read to Cirra.  The stickers for the kindergartener s are the same or very similar.  We also provided the students with Cirra's breed cards with a picture of Cirra on the front and breed characteristic s on the back.  It is my understanding the Cirra's picture is on some of the student's refrigerators and in their photo albums.

When we get a chance we are planning to make some word games about Cirra - crosswords and word searches.

When putting together Cirra's Book Bags it did occur to me -that this might be a better project for a black dog.

I am always interested in any suggestions from other folks participating in Children Reading to Dogs programs.

Hello all.  Hope that everyone is doing well.  We have been staying busy with Cirra's Dog Scout Troop which had their one year anniversary in September.

Her troop co-sponsored an event with the local kennel club for the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day in Septemeber.  It seemed to be quite a success however was a major project.  Activities at the Canine Carnival included:  breed rescue groups, animal shelters, educational booths, canine sports demonstrations, Meet the Breeds, Canine Good Citizen testing, dog games and activities, crafts and activities for children, vendors, a canine photo contest and the kick off for the Downeast Dog Scouts Fall Walkathon.

Last Wednesday Cirra participated in a Reader Dog Tea at a local library.  She has been a reader dog there this past summer.

Here are some pictures:

An artist made a cartoon of Cirra at the Carnival - She is very serious about guarding her sheep.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Pet First Aid - Any instructors?
« on: March 03, 2008, 03:34:47 pm »
Cirra's Dog Scout Troop is considering offering a workshop on Pet First Aid.  I was wondering if any one is an instructor and if so what was involved in becoming one.  Has any one gone to pet first aid workshops?  Likes and dislikes?  If you would go to one - what would you want to learn?  Something basic or more advanced?  Thanks.

The Great Pyrenees Nationals are going to be in Westlake Ohio at the end of April this year.  I saw that there is a National Park and some State Parks around Cleveland.  Just curious.  I don't think Cirra will be ineterested in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Thanks.

Cirra has been staying very busy with her Downeast Dog Scouts troop.  Last December her troop walked in a Christmas Parade and had a booth at at "Downtown Family Festival".  At the festival troop members and their dogs showed children how to greet dogs properly.  We gave large paw print stickers to the children who participated in greeting our dogs. During the first four months of this year we are using part of each meeting to help the other troop dogs with their Dog Scout Test.  Cirra has earned her Backpacking and Clean Up II badges.  Here is a link to troops across the country.

Here is a link to the Idita-Walk:
http://www.idita-walk.com

It is an event to promote physical fitness in the spirit of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.  The Iditarod Sled dog race is 1049 miles long from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska.  To complete the Idita-walk, walk 30 minutes a day for 35 days between February 1, 2008 to March 31, 2008 for a total of 1049 minutes.

We don't know how far we would get in 30 minutes right now - Cirra and her "Snow Angels".
