Big Dogs with Jobs / Rally Obedience
« on: October 16, 2006, 08:49:09 am »
Any of our talented BPO dogs "playing" Rally?  Cirra got a qualifying score in her Rally Novice A class at a show this weekend.  We had to work for every point.  She now has two legs and will try for her title next year when the shows start again.  It sure takes a lot of patience to succeed these "non-traditional" obedience types.  Cirra seems to enjoy herself "showing off" or just watching everything that is going on around her.  She attracted a lot of attention at the show and was a great Canine Good Citizen.

Spaying and neutering can be done to prevent health problems - tumors, etc.  however there is a correlation to ACL injuries in spayed females. We did not know this when we had Cirra spayed at nine months. She did have an ACL injury which we are treating using conservative management and not the TPLO.  Our vet did not inform us of this correlation when asked several times about any reason we should not have the surgery. What has everyone's experience been with this issue?  Are your vet's providing this information?  Vet's immediately recommending the invasive TPLO for any level of ACL injury?  Are any willing to consider conservative management especially in younger dogs who have not finished growing?  Spay/neuter at all?  If so, at what age?  Differences between males and females?  Any ideas, comments, experiences, suggestions???  Just curious.

Great Pyrenees Discussions / National Specialty pics

We haven't had much time but wanted to share something from the specialty.  More later.  Cirra had an absolute blast around the other pyrs, since she is, as yet, the only dog at our household right now.

just wondering if anyone on the board has had success with conservative management of a cruciate ligament tear in their large dog?  Cirra has had this diagnosis after lameness, and one vet recommends TPLO out of state.  Concerned about the many potentially severe complications and have embarked on the long process of trialing conservative management, restricting activity, bracing, etc.  Any wise words regarding the "traditional" procedures such as lateral tie either? Cirra is outgoing, exuberant, 16 months old and hard to keep "quiet." All considerations with any surgery, and she is a pyr, so anesthesia concerns reign as well.  Felt that she was far too sedated just for xrays even after warning the vet consultant not to dose by weight.....Wel l, we are 3 weeks into the official diagnosis and a total of 3 months into lameness problems with the knee.  Arthritis is inevitable  with any method of management and just have not wanted to irrevocably change her anatomy without heavy consideration and trial of conservative methods. Wanted to throw this out there as we still agonize every day about this.  She is walking, tends to have a habit of partial weighbearing, but weightbears better with the brace, and distractions.. ..Well, enough said for now. Wish us luck with our wild and wonderful gal!

Cirra passed her Canine Good Citzen Test yesterday.  We are very proud of her and still can not believe it.  At sixteen months Cirra is quite a character and has been the class clown.  The goal is to for her to pass her Therapy Dog International Test in the Fall.  She does have great potential as a therapy dog since she is such as "smile machine".

Just wonderimg if any one has had any success with non toxic tick preventatives.  We don't have a problem with fleas although do have a lot of ticks in Downeast Maine. We are aware of many herbal oils and diet supplements - are they effective?  Any credible research available?  Any suggestions???

We were not able to get a picture of Cirra for the March Photo Contest in time.  We tried two weekends ago and then again this past Saturday and just could not do it.  The plan involved balloons with a nice ocean background.  Well...  We will spare you the many details however we had winds of forty mph, popping balloons, teenagers who refused to move out of our picture, etc, etc, etc.  We did take a few pictures inside with the remaining balloons.  We are planning our photo for April which does not involve any Easter balloons on the side of a cliff.  Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!

:)
Thank you so much everyone for voting for our beloved girl Cirra this Valentine's day! We're glad you loved her pic as much as we do.  Cirra's such a happy girl! Congratulation s to everyone on their great girls and guys!

Breed- Great Pyrenees

Birthday- 12-10-2004, currently 14 months

Cirra just loves flowers, so what a perfect fit!

Best traits- extremely friendly and makes people smile, Worst traits-practitioner of "passive resistance"

Best liked food-meat of all kinds, best liked treats-frozen buffalo bones and peanut butter, least liked food- none yet

Favorite toy-large balls and (momentarily) stuffed toys

Favorite Hangout is on her fleece bed or the coolest spot

Best dog friend is her "Adie" a liver & white Springer Spaniel, whom she loves to play chase endlessly in the yard or wrestle carefully in the living room-she's just the best!

Favorite memory is the "love at first sight" with the "green girl" puppy (a.k.a. Cirra) climbing awkwardly over the board to the puppy room at the breeder's house.
