Leonberger Discussions / Re: Sophie is driving me crazy- vent/need advice
« on: October 26, 2008, 02:26:31 am »
Sophie sounds like a fun loving gal.  "Exercising" her mind by teaching her some new "manners games" and "tricks" may be helpful.  Training will use up a lot of her energy.  Life is all games to Sophie at her age.  Make the games positive, fun and training times short.  Eventually, she will trade her counter surfing and stealing games for ones that you prefer.  Good luck.  Cirra has never liked Kongs either.  Cirra is one of those challenging, fun loving gals.  She almost four years old and a therapy and reader dog.  We think that she is the best.

Remembering those no longer with us. / Re: Goodbye sweet Bear
« on: July 29, 2008, 06:35:30 pm »
Very sorry for your loss. :'(  You certainly did the absolute best for Bear that could be done.  Know that & take comfort in that.  Thinking of you.

Thanks!!!! - We were third place!!! We were surprised and very pleased.  There were 70 entries in the parade - of course not all were floats.  Float building and decorating is not as easy as it seems!!!  Not bad for our first float.

Cirra being white is due to genetics and taking care of her coat.  Mostly genetics.

You can go to the Dog Scouts of America website - www.dogscouts. org for more information about the Scouts.  We just started our own troop.

We're so sorry.  We have a Manx as well and they are precious friends.  It is better emotionally to have closure, but so hard to let go again.  Remember the wonderful times most of all!

Cirra's Dog Scout Troop had a float in the Bar Harbor Fourth of July Parade.  What a project!!!  The theme was "Salute to Liberty - so the eagle.  The float won third place!!!  Not great pictures however you can get an idea of what it looked like.

I am curious about how much you are giving and when in relationship to a storm.

Thanks - Robyn and Cirra

That "cannon" sounds like a nightmare!  We are steeling ourselves for the 4th.  Glad we already have the wrap.  No radar to predict it though.  If there weren't so many drunk people on the road here at that time of night, we might put Cirra in the car until the big show in town is over and our neighborhood calms down.  I have started calling, particularly if there is a moderate or higher fire danger on the island.  (That is why they are call Fire works)  We have thousands of tourists and a noise ordinance after 9 pm, so I try to be an equal pain in the ......  I wish you luck with that one though.  We live near the water and things do reverberate for miles and miles, so we have an idea.  Like seaduck hunting tours with boatloads of people all shooting at the same duck...... Needless to say, Cirra doesn't like that either and we then watch the tides to predict them.  Hope the cannon folks run out of gunpowder or money soon!  Denise

It does sound as though you have tried many, many things.  Have you tried the anxiety wrap?  We really believe that it is helpful with Cirra.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Cute tags
« on: June 23, 2008, 09:54:39 am »
We got some of the collar type tags for Cirra from www.boomerangt ags.com and they have worked well.  It is nice to be able to slip them on her collars.

Thank you for the excellent article information!  We have tried several of them and believe we are getting better with management, for Cirra and us.  Reduction of stimuli is one key.  We know Pyrs that have gone to the basement with blacked out windows....... .Pyrs in bathtubs...... Pyrs with calming caps......and our girl with the Anxiety Wrap,TFLN or fast acting Melatonin, distractions and reduced stimuli.  We go out as soon as it is safe to do so and show Cirra that the world is as it should be.  She recovers quicker that way, and we leave the wrap on for awhile.  She started all of this with FIREWORKS peaking over the trees next door. Her reactivity is worse at night as well when the light flashes contrast more, so we turn on the outside floods to diminish the contrast.  Problem is that the lights can flash on and off with power interruptions, and then Cirra will ramp up even more.  Melatonin did the best with that last year.  (We took the melatonin as well if it was at night)  Denise has also done some calming accupressure learned from the book, The Well Connected Dog.
Again, hang in there.  Thinking of ya!

Hang in there.  Hopefully you will find something and/or a combination of things that will help.  We do know that living with a thunderstorm dog can be extremely stressful and exhausting!!!  Last year we had a lot of storms and there didn't seem like there was much time in between them for Cirra to "recover".  It is my understanding that it can take days for a dog to relax from being in a very anxious state.  This year we have not had as many storms.  I really think that each dog is different and what works for one may not for another.  It has been helpful to Cirra and us if we can keep her out of that really crazy anxious state as much as possible using distractions, homeopathy, anxiety wrap, roast beef, etc.  Once she gets to that crazy state there is not much we can do except put a no pull harness and leash on her and keep her safe.  We do think that the wrap helps her recover sooner!!!  Last year I would have said that there is no way Cirra would respond to anything during a storm.  She stills gets crazy during a bad storm however we have found  ways to help minimize the stress for all of us.  There is hope!!!  I can't remember - do you have a basement?  Some folks say the bath tub is grounding and helpful (I would not trust Cirra in a bath tub when she is crazy)  Do you go out after the storm to show her that everything is OK?
