General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: Delta vs. TDI
« on: April 06, 2008, 09:01:22 am »
Delta, Therapy Dogs Internation,Inc and Therapy Dogs Incorporated, Inc are three national organizations that test and register therapy dogs.  They each have a website for additional information. Some training facilities offer classes specifcally related to therapy dogs.  We had Cirra tested with Therapy Dogs International because that is what is available in our area.

I think that educating others about responsible dog guardianship is a wonderful contribution however any one can do that.  That is one reason that we have enjoyed being part of the Dog Scouts.

Cirra has had the Canine Cooler bed by Soothsoft.  She had a medium size when a puppy which she chewed - not the  bed's fault.  Then we got a large one because she had won a gift certificate in a photo contest. We had it outside in a screen room with a cover all last summer.  Cirra really liked it however it burst a seam in the Fall when we brought it inside. We have sent for a replacement at the company's expense.  They are plastic so need to out gas.  That has been our experience so far.

Cirra has a Kuranda bed which she likes and has held up great.  She is still on their website as a Dog of the Month - Spring 2006.  www.kuranda.co m  I remember we had a difficult time getting it together however I think they changed something regarding that.  I would buy another one.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: TPLO times 2
« on: March 31, 2008, 07:17:52 am »
There has been discussion about TPLO and options on this board so searching the forum may help provide some information.  There is information available - a conservative management Yahoo Group has resources.  Canine rehab folks may also be a resource.  Acupuncture may also be helpful.  Of course it will not repair the joint  however may make your dog more comfortable.  Have you tried any alternative therapies, homeopathy or supplements?  For many reasons we choose conservative management with Cirra instead of the TPLO.  She does have some arthritis however would have arthritis will the surgery as well.

We wrote a long reply last night however didn't post for some reason?

It is not recommended to punish a dog for growling.  Lily is communicating with you.  Not that Lily is aggressive however a dog that is punished for growling may eventually  skip the communication part and snap or bite first.

Cirra has never growled at us however will have "temper tantrum" type behavior when she is really frustrated and wants her way.  She will lie on the ground throw her head around and start swinging with her front leg.  We try to ignore her based on the philosophy that rewarded behaviors increase and unrewarded behaviors decrease.

We have gone through this with Cirra.  It is most frustrating!!!  Robyn feels as though after what feels like 200 "snow angels" that Cirra should do someting for her - such as - get up and move - however dogs don't think that way.  It is all about what is in it for them.  When Lily does do what you want - give a super reward!!!

Cirra was worse when she was younger.  When on walks we would set up a "treasure hunt" game so she would have things to find.  Robyn used to bring a book on walks to give her something to do while waiting Cirra out when she didn't want to move.  Throwing a favorite toy or treat and telling her to take it sometimes works.  Gloves and mittens have been a good choice in the past.  However when Cirra really does not want to get up - she is very strong willed about it.  If her behavior is not about wanting to stay in the snow it is usually about wanting to be a guardian dog.

It seems that Lily is wanting to be a guardian Pyr.  Cirra is extremely friendly however her guardian instincts have increased with age.  A change in Lily's routine may be helpful.  We always take Cirra out on a leash in the evenings with a reward when she comes in.

Even with training and a great relationship - dogs are dogs and big white fluffy dogs certainly have their own opinions about things.

Thanks for posting the Canine Good Neighbor Test.  Although similar to the CGC I had seen the test requirements before.  Just curious - what therapy dog testing organizations are in your area?  Thanks.

Monthly Photo Contests / Re: March 08 Contest Info.
« on: March 09, 2008, 09:36:53 am »
We apologize that we did not get an "Irish in 2008" picture for Cirra.  You know how much we have enjoyed the photo contests.  We had a few ideas however just didn't have enough time.  We really need to take pictures on the weekends and we just couldn't fit it in this past weekend.  We would like to participate the in photo contests however just need some time to come up with an idea and to take the picture.  There is not much green outside here in Maine - we have had ice, ice and more ice.

Just wondering if any one else is going to the Great Pyrenees Nationals this year in Westlake Ohio (near Cleveland) at the end of April.

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Pet First Aid - Any instructors?
« on: March 03, 2008, 04:28:15 pm »
We are looking in to the Red Cross Program.  I am wondering if the Red Cross Pet First Aid class is standardized across the country and if it is very basic or provides more advanced information???

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Pet First Aid - Any instructors?
« on: March 03, 2008, 03:34:47 pm »
Cirra's Dog Scout Troop is considering offering a workshop on Pet First Aid.  I was wondering if any one is an instructor and if so what was involved in becoming one.  Has any one gone to pet first aid workshops?  Likes and dislikes?  If you would go to one - what would you want to learn?  Something basic or more advanced?  Thanks.
