Lyn,
I don't know all of the details of your struggles with Bubba, but I can tell you that, from an outisde perspective, the new pictures of Bubba look great! He still looks skinny, but there is a HUGE improvement that you probably can't see because you're in the thick of it. You can tell that he is a happy and very well-loved boy!

I also reccomend seeking a second opinion, because, doctors and vet's diagnoses, are, for the most part, opinions.Which means that someone may have a different opinion that fits.

I also recommend adding supplements to his food, if he doesn't have allergies to the ingredients in satin balls, try that. Or try adding fresh meat/fish/eggs etc that he handles well, throw some extra (and tasty!) calories in there.

Also, as a last ditch effort, and talk to your vet about it first, try caloric powders. Our friends have two duaghter with cystic fibrosis that can't keep weight on them for anything. So, they sprinkle a powder on their foods that is basiccally just calories. I have no idea if they work/are healthy for dogs, but it's always worth askign, right?

Lastly, keep in mind that you are doing a great job. You have shown a dedication that is incredibly admirable, and he is lucky to have such a great mom. Weight that is gained slowly is kept on for longer, and generally is more healthy than immediate gains. Kepe up the good work, he is a handsome boy!

Well, I don't know about dogs, but our cat Abby has some very severe allergy problems. Our vet explained to us that food intolerances manifest themselves in digestive problems, and allergies manifest in skin problems.

For allergies, generally they can develop new allergies to foods they were not previously allergic to, but rarely become un-allergic except through slow desensitizatio n.

Intolerances vary greatly, they can be seasonal, or develop out of the blue, or exist only for a period of time in their lives. Intolerances also vary greatly with the amount of te ingredient, and what it's paired with. My guess would be that Bubba either outgrew his intolerance, or, like previously mentioned, his digestive system was just under a lot of stress.

I can relate to the fleas! Abbs is also very allergic, a single bite will have her scratching quarter size patches of hair and skin off, all over her body, in less than a day. TG we're moving to an area without fleas!

Three cheers for Bubba and his new food, I hope everything continues to go well!!!

Haha, his name is Grizzly and he is a 3 1/2 year old brown Newf. Apparently he is very mellow, likes getting to meet new people, doesn't eat cats (Abby is thankful for that) and just an all-around amazing boy. He was purchased from a breeder/quasi puppy-miller in the Midwest for a family where the daughter had extreme asthma problems, and no amount of grooming could help. So, that's how he ended up in Rescue.

I have no idea how to post a picture on here, so no pictures yet. But just picture the most adorable Newf (other than all the BPOers, of course) you've ever seen with a big bone in his mouth.

We foudn out this morning that they are officially considering us, so we will have to fill out the application, newflvr will most likely do a home check, and, hopefully, we'll be new parents before too long!

I'm actually at the CA/NV border at Lake Tahoe, so we'd be farther away from you in Utah, but I'd be willing to drive and meet you. We coudl foster him as long as you needed. Let me know what you find out about him and if you're interested in taking him home with you. He sure looks like a sweetie.

Something about his eyes just caught me. He's at a shelter about 6 hours from me, I could pull and foster for awhile if needed. He seems like a doll. The shelter he's at keeps a dog, on average, about 2 weeks before they are PTS, so if anyone is interested I can go get him next Friday.

We will most certainly keep you posted. I think the only issue will be getting a home check- we're rather an awful distance to drive to, but I'm hoping hoping hoping that this works out. Thanks for the offer for transport, we migth just take you up on it, or maybe we'll just race down there and brign him home as soon as we possibly can!  ;D If we can, we're really hopeful but trying not to get excited, as we've been let down so many times before. Hubbs made me promise not to even think about names until he's sleeping on our couch..

I got an email from Cathy this morning, and sent an email to Laurie with rescue to see what we have to do to proceed. Grizzly is absolutely adorable- I just want to hug him through the computer! So, fingers crossed andhoping things will work out!

By the way, you are my hero  ;D

The hubby and I have considered putting up some sort of fence just to say "we have a fence", but I wouldn't even know where to put it! The terrain up here is so rugged and there are so many trees, etc that we wouldn't even know where to begin. Plus, four feet of snow is one thing, but the 8-10 that we sit under from December to March, we'd need an uber fence. And, they're even predicting more snow than normal this winter, so we'll be up close to 12-15 ish.
Hubby is cute though "we have a fence around the pool, doesn't that count?"
I really don't want to go through a breeder, I just have such a heart for rescue that it would kill me. I know there are so many dogs out there that need good homes, apparently just better homes than we can give- grumble gurmble. (It's morning, I'm allowed to be grumpy  ;)) Plus, I'd much rather have an adult than a puppy (I know, I'm weird) But I also know that if we're still dogless in 6 months, we'll have to go that route. (Hubbers is quite anxious to have a pupper to love and play with) But, we'll see. We're marching on.

You guys can adopt me.  I weigh as much as a big paw and love open space.  ;)

You'll find the right one, I promise...

Julie

Only if you promise to drool, shed, and not eat my slippers! ;D

So sorry to hear about your baby! He sounds beautiful though (pictures? ;D)

My advice would be to put him on a large blanket, perhaps fodl a comforter in half, and use that to lift him. When you get him home, have a neighbor or friend hold you and grab each corner of the blanket and use it like a stretcher. That's how they move patients frombed to bed in the hospital, so I don't see why it wouldn't work with an animal patient. Best of luck and well wishes for Chumley!

Thank you for all of your kind words :)I know that when we find our baby, we're going to be so thankful that we didn't end up with any of the others, but ti's hard to see that now.

We're especially fond of Newfies, but really just have a heart for big, big dogs. We need a dog that won't eat our cat, that won't have to wear a sweater during the winter (lots and lots of snow here!, and we love long haired dogs, though the hubby loves Danes as well), gets along with other dogs (we know we won't be able to stay a one dog famiyl forever, or even very long at all!), and doesn't have any people aggression issues (we work at a camp and so have strangers around frequently, though never unsupervised with our puppers). We have vet references, personal references, and would be more than willing to give a tour of the place, or send videos/pictures to those too far to visit.

We have a heart for special needs dogs, and senior puppers. We'd prefer an adult to a puppy. Separation anxiety? Bring it on. Needs some housebreakign practice? No problem. Little lacking in the obedience department? We can take it (heck, we work with troubled ttens most of the time! At least dogs don't do drugs or make out in the bushes!) Medical issues? We can take it in stride, as long as he or she has sufficient mobility to be able to take walks on rolling hills. (There's no such thing as flat space around here). We also need a dog that is, in general, dependable off leash.

I know it sounds like a huge list, but we're not that picky, I promise! We live in the Lake Tahoe/Sacramento area of CA and are willing to personally drive 8-10 hours to bring home our baby. So, if any of the eagle-eyed out there have anyone in mind, please let us know!

This issue always perplexes me. On the one hand, shelters are over-full and animals are getting put down by the thousands every day. And on the other hand, people who really want and can provide for a dog are being turned down! AGH!

I hate that!

We had another group tell us that they would nto adopt a dog to us because we have a (very dog-savvy) cat. Apparently cats and dogs should not live together ???

We're in Twin Bridges off Highway 50 before Sierra at Tahoe. We're about 20 minutes east of South Lake Tahoe

We even have a pond, a pool, and a creek  ;D Plus, we go out to the Lake (Echo, or Tahoe) on a weekly basis in the summer.

I briefly spoke with a lady with newf rescue of northern CA who said that as a general rule they don't adopt to homes without fencing, so we've been afraid to apply and get another no. But, I guess it's always worth another shot
