American Mastiff Discussions & Pictures / Re: Otis the Mastiff
« on: March 10, 2006, 09:57:56 am »
Jacqie,
Otis is not an AM he is and English Mastiff. Not all breeders take their dogs back in fact most don't. Mind you I am talking from a rescue perspective and deal with dogs that are mostly purchased from back yard breeders or worse pet stores. Those breeders just care about the money and don't really care much what happens to the dog once they get paid. Otis was bought by a college kid who knew his Mom loved dogs and thought she wouldn't mind having Otis. He was wrong and the Mom said no so that is where Otis's current owner came into play. I commend him for trying to place Otis however I begged him to neuter him first and let him know that rescue was there to help him place the dog in an "approved" home. I hope someone hears from him soon.

How terrible. SOunds like some separation anxiety for sure. I personally would try a crate but also use a food stuffed king in the crate to keep the dog "busy". They say dogs don't have a sense of time so if you are away for 15 minutes or 5 hours they miss you terribly! I hope it works out for you. Please keep us posted!

I hope she has heard from him. If he did bring him to a shelter I will probably get a call anyway but I hate for him to have to spend one minute there. I doubt that he was that drastic but just curious why we never heard back from him  ???

Julie or Kristi,
Have you heard any more about Otis? I just want to make sure he is okay. We have tried to contact him several times but no call backs. I just wanted to make sure the big guy didn't get dumped out of desperation.
Thanks,
Kim

Inner Strength

If you can start the day without caffeine,

! If you c an get going without pep pills,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every  day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment

If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than! a poor friend,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

...Then You Are Probably  The Family Dog!

I think it is safe to assume that you won't be getting a reply. Some breeders simply don't breed for the right reasons and once the pup is sold they no longer care. I am not saying that this particular breeder is that way however I think if they had done all of the testing and such that they would have emailed you back in a  heartbeat. As for what the future holds for your new addition only time will tell. Just take the best care of him that you can by providing a loving home along with moderate exercise and a high quality diet and spoil the heck out of him  ;D

My Mom always said if you don't have anyting nice to say don't say anything at all! The number one thing to look for in a breeder is the testing done on their dogs. You already have this dog so at this time that point is mute. A good mastiff breeder will be a member of MCOA (Mastiff Club of America) and will follow their code of etichs which includes taking any of their dogs back if the owner can't keep them.
No matter, sounds like you have a great OEM so enjoy him  :)

He sure is a handsome boy! I like guiness, that is a great name. I would day go ahead and change his name but if you can keep it close to Elvis it would probably be easier on him. THanks for sharing the picturesof your "zoo crew"

Next chapter in the Otis story. I talked with Kristi and agree that Otis sounds like a great dog. I have contacted his owner again (left another message) about surrendering Otis to Mastiff Rescue and am waiting to hear back.
It was great to talk to you Kristi and thanks again for calling us at Mastiff Rescue  :)
