Mixed Breed Pictures / NEW "not so big paw" puppy!
« on: April 05, 2006, 01:48:34 pm »
Here's our new baby.  He's really only going to be a medium-sized paw, but I wanted to share.  He's 12 weeks old.  1/2 Australian Shepherd and 1/2 Australian Cattle Dog.  His name is Mick Foster...  gotta have a middle name for when they get in trouble.   ;D

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / OK exercise amount
« on: March 15, 2006, 11:06:37 am »
I know that I have to be careful with the amount of exercise for giant breeds, especially while they're growing, but how much is too much?  I like to do a lot of walking... 4 miles per day/5-6 times per week.  I used to take my spaniel mix who had no trouble keeping up, but sadly he's gone now.  I have been hesitant to take Zoe that much, but I miss my walking buddy.  She's almost 15 months.  What do you all think would be safe?

Food Discussion & Information / I have become a freak for my dog...
« on: March 12, 2006, 07:14:17 pm »
After several days of researching the foods listed in the whole dog journal, I have opted to switch Zoe to one of those premium brands of kibble.  I also made a batch of the Satin Balls today and let me just say... WOW!  That is a LOT of meatballs!  My husband thinks I love Zoe more than my family 'cause I'd do that for her, but not for them... He thinks I'm a freak.  :-\
Now for my question... ???If I want her to put on some weight, how many Satin Balls to feed?  At about 3 tablespoons each, should I give her 1 or 2 per day?  Every day or every other day?  Thanks everyone!

Food Discussion & Information / Canidae?
« on: March 09, 2006, 08:17:25 pm »
I saw an old post talking a bit about Canidae... I've been feeding Science Diet large breed and I have a feeling it is inferior.  Can someone clarify the differences for me?  Thanks!

Food Discussion & Information / Why are they called Satin Balls?
« on: March 09, 2006, 07:59:39 pm »
 ??? ??? ???
It seems like a funny name.  I just found the recipe and it looks like something Zoe will go crazy for.  She's tall, but lanky.  She could use a bit of cushion...

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / How soon?
« on: March 08, 2006, 08:04:14 pm »
We have our beautiful one year old saint, Zoe.  We recently lost...3 weeks ago...our 3 year old spaniel mix to a neurological illness that only lasted 2 1/2 days...  We miss him.  Zoe is lonely.  My husband has been looking for a new canine companion.  We're looking at an aussie/heeler mix that will be ready to go at the end of the month.  I'm not sure I'm ready...I think the kids are...I know Zoe would like some company.  And what about this mix of breeds?  I think I know what we're getting into, but not positive.  Anyone out there with some experience with aussies or heelers?

Saint Bernard General Discussions / elbow pads?
« on: March 05, 2006, 09:12:57 pm »
My first post...
My Zoe is just over 1 year old.  She's had these soft-tissue pillow-type things on the backs of her front elbows.  Are these normal?  I thought they were built-in elbow pads for when she plops down...but today I noticed one is bigger than the other.  Are these normal?
