Great Dane Discussions / Rough elbows on Bella!
« on: June 05, 2006, 11:24:40 pm »
I know that danes can be prone to callouses on their elbows from lying on hard surfaces, but I try to always let Bella lay on something soft.  She sleeps on my bed at night, and when she is in her crate, she has her crate bed (although she does sometimes push it completely to the side and lay on the cool plastic tray ::)).  She has a couple of areas at her elbows that are just kind of bare and rough (nothing big,...yet).  Does anyone know of anything that can help prevent these from getting worse?  Ointments, creams, ...any kind of help!
Thanks!
Tessie

Just had to share some recent photos.  She just loves her new "mad Kitty" toy, and has already destroyed her carrot! :)

This is continued from my previous post trying to save Spencer, the pitbull terrier, who is scheduled to be euthanized just because of his breed.  I received an email back from the radio station employee who is trying to help.

I would like to start a petition that she can use with the attorney.  Can anyone give me direction? ???
Here's the email that she sent.  I am also trying to get a photo of Spencer to include.

> Hi Tessie
> We have a court hearing to save Spencer Friday, at 11:00. I don't know who
the Judge will be, but I'll know Monday. If you can make time to be there, it
would help. We're also starting petitions to "Save Spencer". If you would like
to start one, that would be helpful as well. However, I will need it at the
radio station by Thursday afternoon so I can give it to our attorney. Thank you
for wanting to help, and I will email you with the judges name as soon as I
find out. If for some reason you don't get an email from me by Tuesday, email
me again if you would like to be there.

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / How can we help save Spencer??
« on: June 03, 2006, 02:00:48 pm »
I'm so upset after reading a story in the local news here in Mobile, Alabama. :'(
Here's the link:  http://www.al.com/news/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/news/1149326299170910.xml&coll=3#continue
It doesn't include a picture of Spencer in the link, but he really only looks like a puppy.  I, myself, have been leary of pitbulls because of all of the attacks that I have seen at my hospital, but those all had very bad histories behind these attacks.  I just don't agree with putting a dog down just because of it's breed.
Is there anything that anyone knows of that we can do about this??? :'(

Food Discussion & Information / Are melons safe?
« on: May 31, 2006, 10:29:09 pm »
I just haven't ran across a thread or any articles saying that melons are safe or not.  Specifically, are watermelons, honeydew, or cantalope OK to feed as a snack for my Dane?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Going for the kill
« on: May 13, 2006, 10:03:14 pm »
Well, two of Bella's new toys were just destroyed.  The pink bunny had no chance.  Tail was torn off in about 1-2 minutes.  The geiko did put up a better fight.  I think that it took about 10 minutes to rip off one of his legs! ;D ;D  She then enjoyed a celebratory bully stick after the kills! :D

Great Dane Discussions / I'm just trying to take a shower....
« on: May 11, 2006, 11:40:38 pm »
OK, am I the only one who has this problem? ???  I just got out of the shower, and once again it was a trying time.  Bella will be minding her own business, but as soon as I get in the shower, she has to stick her head in the entire time!  She drinks a little water, tries to lick my feet, and even tries to lick shaving cream off of my legs!! :P  After a few minutes of dodging her tongue, I can't help but laugh!  She's just nutty when I get in the shower!! ;D

Great Dane Discussions / Dane's growth
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:45:42 am »
Does anyone know when Dane's growth spurts occur?  Bella weighed 100lb at the beginning of March.  She was just over 7 months old.  Exactly two months later, she has only gained 1 and a half pounds.  Her mom was about 150 and her dad was 165-170.  I expect her to get bigger, but I was just curious about how fast.

I'm worried because Bella has a couple of little bald spots are her head.  They are only the size of the tip of a pencil, but she had to be treated for demodex when she was about 2 or 3 months old.  The vet assured me at the time that puppies' immune systems are changing so much that it can happen.  She is 9 months old now, and we are headed to the vet to get it checked out tomorrow.  The vet had said previously that if she were a year or older, we would need to worry about underlying problems that may be causing immune problems.
We'll see tomorrow if it is what I fear, but has anyone had experience with demodectic mange? :(

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Frequent reader, new member

I'm the owner of a nine month old Great Dane.  I have really enjoyed reading tips from this site since shortly after I got Bella.  I finally got myself together to join and am so proud of myself!  Just wanted to know if there are any other Dane members in the South Alabama area.  I know that I have ran across a few in the past.
Hello to everyone! :)
