Games & Jokes / Re: Calculate your dog's age in human years easily!
« on: July 09, 2006, 04:53:24 pm »
Gabriel's DogAge is 29.3!

That's 12.2 years younger than the average DogAge for Gabriel's breed.

Yay Gabriel! (It's his 7th birthday tomorrow too...shhh!)

Awwww, Nicole! So sorry to hear he is terrorizing the natives. I sure do wish we had some space open in our house. He sounds like the perfect addition to our hous...althoug h Gabriel might not like the competition in small animal attacking.

He sounds like a giant Watson really. I just know you will be able to save this boy like you did Watson. I have faith in you, my friend!  :-*

I seem to remember a lot of vomit when my dogs were young. We get some nice "ralphs" around here every once in a while now, but not like when the dogs were under a year old.

If he is acting normal otherwise...I wouldn't worry just yet. Hope everything is OK.

My favorite is the movie "Dick."

It's a comedy about Richard Nixon. I thought the movie was hilarious, and the plot somewhat revolved around a German Shorthaired pointer. (Kirsten Dunst and Michelle WIlliams are the official White House dog walkers).

Nixon actually had a Cocker Spaniel named Checkers, but I'm glad they used a GSP or I would have never rented the movie.

I love it.

I've seen other articles that I loved that mused about how kids survived without bicycle helmets, etc. Things that we now freak out over.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Who Else Buys Beef Soup Bones?
« on: June 29, 2006, 08:46:39 pm »
I feed my dog these bones, but I do have a warning.

One of my dogs got one caught on his jaw. the hole was big enough that he managed to get it over his bottom canines and around his tongue and bottom jaw. It came off at the vet's office after they gave him a sedative that relaxed his jaw.

So, if you do feed them...watch the holes in the middle. Get the smallest ones you can. My vet said it was a very common occurance.

From the looks of it, that is a lot bigger than a normal spool, or whatever you call it, that you would buy in a store. Can you relate to us about how big that package is?

Sorry I'm pestering you, but I just think it's an interesting idea that I might try someday.

That is awesome! How much did that end up costing? (If you don't mind me asking)

My dog has HD, and when we got him at about a year old he couldn't walk up the two stairs in my house without assistance. He was in a lot of pain. My vet told me about the surgical options, as well as chiropractic adjustments and accupunture.

I chose the chiro and accupuncture. He had sessions in close proximity at first, then they spread apart. Maybe about ten sessions in all over a period of 6 months. It probably cost me about $500 total.

That was 6 years ago. He is still benefiting from those treatments today. He walks normally and can run and go up stairs without signs of pain. I fully expect him to live a normal life, relatively pain free. Maybe when he is older he will have som problems, but he is already over 6 years old and doing well.

If your dog evver starts showing discomfort in the hips, I would suggest looking fo a holistic vet that does accupuncture and adjustments. Supposedly it has greater benefit and longer lasting results if done early on.

I don't know how you can get them to do that. Mine all scoot closer to me as I move back to take the picture.

I just love Gauge, he reminds me of my boy, Gabriel.

Gypsy,

My heart goes out to you. I am in a similar situation with my GSP mix, Watson. He "turned" about a year and a half ago. Maybe he already had it in him and he just never showed it, but the turning point that I saw was a day that he got out of the yard and something bit him (just tiny little punctures on his chest). That day he bit me in the face and came close to taking out my eye. I was so upset I made my husband take him to the emergency vet while my parents took me to the hospital for stitches. I thought something HAD to be very wrong with my sweet little boy for him to bite.

Well, there was nothing wrong with him, and he is fine most of the time, but he does scare me again sometimes by growling at me. I found that I can deal with it and make it go away by holding his muzzle and verbally "dominating" him, then giving him praise when he calms down. Ever since that day he has had agression issues with other dogs, and sometimes even get a little too riled up with my dogs.

Fortunatley, I don't have any children living with me. I have a 14 year old step-daughter, but she is old enough to do the right thing if Watson starts to show signs of fear or agression when she is over. I still do not trust anyone to get in his face besides hubby and me though.

I still fear that he will get out of my yard and attack a child. It is very unnerving. I'm sure my insurance wouldn't like it too much if something like that were to happen and they found out he had bit me before. I haven't sent him to the bridge because he is such a very sweet boy. I just have fears that someday he could hurt another human, or even more likely another dog.

I wish you the strength to make whatever decision you need to. ((hugs))

That stinks that you have ongoing problems. It's a good thing hubby can fix you up as much as possible!

Hope you feel better!
