General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / What will your next dog be?
« on: January 21, 2008, 05:19:56 pm »
If and/or when you get another dog, have you picked out what breed it will be? Boy or girl? Or are you hoping to rescue whatever mixed breed or purebred comes your way? Got any colors picked out too? Tell us about it!  :)

I'm pretty sure my next one will be a Harlequin Great Dane puppy, but haven't decided whether I want a boy or girl yet.

What about you?  :)

Group Discussions & Photos / Some new pics of my girls...finally!
« on: November 20, 2007, 10:18:02 am »
Hey guys! I haven't left, I've been in lurker mode for forever! Seems like I'm always so busy now with college and everything. But I figured that posting some pics of Zoey and Dolly might not be such a bad idea, considering the last time I did it was September of 2006!  :o Lol! They've both grown quite a bit since then!

Zoey, my Alaskan Malamute, is 2 1/2 and a complete diva! But I love her attitude and spunk, even if it does drive me nuts sometimes.  ;)

And Dolly is my Saint Bernard, also 2 1/2. She is the biggest love bug you will ever meet! I love big fluffy hugs from her!

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Zoey is showing some aggression :(
« on: October 22, 2006, 05:30:21 am »
Well, Zoey and Dolly got out of our gate again this morning, but I got them back and they're both fine. So that's okay. The problem is, when I went to go grab Zoey by the collar, she really, really growled at me. Not playfully. She would have bitten me too if I hadn't had a hold of her head and turned it away from me. The only way I got her back was to put the leash on her and bring her back. But everytime I went to touch her neck or collar, she got very very agitated and aggressive at me. I wasn't scared, I was mad at her for doing it.  >:( But I really do think she would have bitten me. Maybe not hard, but that doesn't matter. So now she is in her pen for the rest of the day.

I will be starting her on "Nothing in life is free" because I have heard so many good things about it from you guys. From my very basic understanding of it, everytime the dog receives anything, you tell them to do a command and if they obey, then they get something, right? If anyone can give me any tips on this or any other ways to deal with Zoey's aggression, please tell me! I will not keep a dangerous or mean dog! I am willing to work with her though. She is my baby, but this is not okay. Please give me some pointers!

Okay, let me start this off. Yesterday, a neighbor boy who lives 2 houses away is throwing rocks into our yard, and they are big ones. They are hitting a roof that we have built over the dog houses to protect the dogs from rain, snow, etc. He's like 9 or 10 years old, so he's old enough to know better, but young enough to play dumb. So my mom saw him and told him to stop and not come on our property anymore. Well, when I came home from school and she told me about the incident, I told her she should go to his house and tell his mom about it. So she did, and his mom apologized for it and scolded him. So we though, hey! Problem solved!

NOT SOOOOO!!!!!  >:(  >:(  >:(

Today during school, I was in the middle of one of my classes and I am told to come to the office. My mom was on the phone and told me one of our nice neighbors had called and said both Zoey and Dolly were running loose, but she had managed to catch Dolly, but Zoey was GONE! So I leave school, come home, put Dolly in the yard, and look for Zoey a little bit. Then I came inside and checked the anwering machine, hoping the ID tag on Zoey's collar had come in handy. It did.  ;D I am so happy it did. But animal control had her at the shelter, so I had to go get Zoey and pay $10 since they had to pick her up. Turns out the dog's had both been running loose since at least 9:15 this morning, and I came home to get Zoey at 1:00!!! So they had been out for awhile. But they are safe is the main point.

Here's the thing. Does anyone think that it's a coincidence that the very day after we tell this boy to stay off our property that our dogs are running loose?!?! There is no hole in the fence and the gate is working properly. That little boy let them out on purpose, I'll bet you anything!!!!  >:( If either of them had gotten hit by a car, errrrr!!!!! I don't know what I'd do!!!  :'( I'd be so sad. But I'm glad they're safe, but I'm upset that now we have to deal with this kid!!! How can people be like this?!  :-\  :'(  >:(

Mixed Breed Pictures / Can I ask you your opinion?
« on: October 10, 2006, 10:57:07 am »
Hey everyone! I've had a question gnawing at me for quite awhile now and I thought I'd see what everyone else thought. Below are some pictures of my first dog, Benny. He passed away at 9 years of age in April, 2005. We were told he was an Australian Shepherd mix. But I always wondered what he was mixed with. He just seemed too big to be just Aussie. He was overweight, but I think a good weight for him would have been about 65 pounds. He was 21 inches tall at the shoulder, I think. I'm posting some pics to see what you guys think he may be mixed with or if you think he's pure Aussie! I know it's impossible to know, but I'd like to have a guess. Thanks! Oh, and the last picture is me with him when I was little!

Okay, I don't have a digital camera and am not used to being able to just take pictures of whatever and put them on the puter. But I borrowed my friend's digital camera for a few days, and I'm going nuts here! So bear with me as I post pictures of my girls for a bit!!!  ;D  :D

I know there aren't a whole lot of people around my area, but I just thought if there are some new members or others who are interested, perhaps we could discuss it? If you would like to suggest a specific weekend, place, or time, that's just fine with me!  :) Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, maybe Arkansas are all pretty easy for me to get to. Maybe Nebraska too. Is anyone able to or willing?

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Not very good vet report for Dolly
« on: September 01, 2006, 05:43:04 pm »
Well, I took Dolly in today to ask the vet what he thought about her back legs. When we go for walks she looks very pigeon-toed and her toes almost touch each other because they go in. And I knew Saint Bernard were prone to joint problems, so I figured I'd better ask now while my girl was young. Basically, the vet said that even though I'm giving her Glucosamine every day, it probably won't help because there have been no definite tests (according to him) that prove that it does help. (I do not agree, oh well.) And showed his lack of knowledge by recommending I switch her from Nutro Max (which he had never heard of  ::) ) to Purina, Pedigree, or Science Diet foods. But, mostly, he seemed to say that she has no pain now but hip dysplasia and knee problems will most likely affect her later. I'm just not sure what to think. Can anyone help me sort all this out? I don't want to call the vet a liar, considering that Saints often do have joint problems, but...I don't know. Maybe I'm just having a hard time accepting it. Dolly's just 15 months old! Does anyone have some guidance or anything for me?

Food Discussion & Information / Thinking about switching dog foods again
« on: August 26, 2006, 05:36:46 pm »
Hey everyone. Being on BPO for a little while has finally opened my eyes to a lot of new things, especially learning about what makes a dog food nutricious for your dog. So after some thought, I think I want to switch my girls to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Large Breed Adult formula. But I haven't had any experience with it at all, so I had some questions first. What does it run price-wise normally? What sizes of bags do they sell? Does anyone have any good or bad reports about it? Let me know. Thanks guys!

This sweet big boy needs a home soon. He's at the Joplin Humane Society in Missouri. I can help with transport if needed. His adoption fee is just $50! Anyone?

Games & Jokes / Next on the Hotseat: Ishelley21 !
« on: August 20, 2006, 01:32:32 pm »
Ishelley21, it's your turn to be on the hotseat! And just so everyone knows, it was recommended and okayed to me that she be on the hotseat for 2 weeks instead of one because she will be out of town for awhile. So feel free to ask away, but her answers may be a bit late in coming. That's okay though! It gives us more time to think of good questions!

1. Where were you born?

2. On what date?

3. Do you have any siblings?

4. Do you live in the same place where you were born?

5. What is your favorite color?

6. What is your favorite movie?

7. Favorite song?

8. Favorite holiday?

9. Favorite thing to do with friends or family?

10. Favorite dessert?

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Dog breed stuff?
« on: August 20, 2006, 05:29:45 am »
I'm wanting to buy maybe some t-shirts and mugs with my dogs' breeds on them. (Alaskan Malamute and Saint Bernard) We have an Australian Shepherd mug that I really love and would like some more with our current breeds on them. I've found some, but nothing that really struck me as lovely. And t-shirts as well. If any of you can post some good websites that have affordable merchandise and shipping rates, I would appreciate it. I know CafePress has some great stuff. If anyone will know more places, you guys will! Thanks!

I saw this brand of dog food at a store here in town and checked it out for future buying perhaps. It's called Exclusive. It has a chicken and rice and lamb and rice adult formulas. I'm not sure what it costs, but I checked out the ingredients and it looks so-so. I tried to look for a website for the company that makes it, but didn't seem to find one. Here are 2 links for the food.

Guys, tell me your honest opinions about this food!!! I'm feeding Nutro Max and Pro Plan right now, if that matters.

Hey everyone. I just found a large listing of big dogs, all of which need good homes. Sorry! No pics right now, but if any of you are interested in one, I could possibly get some and post them. I can pull probably most of these dogs if anyone is interested and help with transport! Can anyone give a good home to a dog in need? Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Collie mix male pup needs a home in OK!
« on: August 08, 2006, 04:10:23 pm »
I am of course like the rest of you a Petfinder addict, but I noticed this boy and felt the need to post him. He's so pretty. I'll paste what they say about him. Can someone give him a home?

Cotton is a beautiful male puppy. He is going to be a very striking dog. He is a little shy at first but he warms up to you. He is a very calm dog. He loves to play with the other dogs. This puppy is at my foster home and he has my heart. If I didn't already have toooooo many dogs I would keep him. He has been neutered and has had the appropriate shots for his age and wormed. He is going to be a big dog. We can't quite figure out what he is . We are guessing he is going to be a large to extra large dog. Maybe collie, some beagle, and maybe great dane. There is no telling. I can not stress how handsome and sweet this dog is.

Here's the link for him; http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=6713214
