Great Pyrenees Discussions / Re: Jenny bit my daughter :(
« on: March 19, 2009, 12:55:53 pm »
Sorry this had to happen..but at 5 I am sure that she can understand that she frightened or even maybe hurt her fur furiend..

I think you are doing great putting Reese in the alpha postion..it helps both of them..and walks I would add..to the routine..with Jenny behind Reese..

I'm willing to bet that will be best friends for a very long time..

As far as him growling at the kids before, it was never what I would call a mean growl. Both times I witnessed it happened Pogo was sleeping and one of the kids stood on his tail.He tried to get up and couldn't so he turned and growled at them.

As I said before..and this is just my oppinion..
*tollerate it or move away*
Sounds like poor Pogo needs some kid training..as well as the kids ..

The fact that he turned to look at them and then growled..I would not consider him safe around kids at present..

Growls don't need to sound mean to MEAN business..
but any growl DIRECTED at a human is a concern..

I hope that you find out news soon and you can get Pogo the needed professional help he needs..

Your getting lots of good advise here..could I add since he is still a pup..try woking obedience in a place  without distractions with lots of praise..and treats if that works or a toy even..

A look at me command helps too..or eyes on me..or whatever you want to use to get his attention on you..

Even though I don't have a pulling problem in my house..no one eats without eyes on me first..that means eye contact..

It is a small thing but it creates big results..

the game *find my eyes * is good too..I'll send it to you if you PM me..it is a creative way to get and keep their attention on you..

Good luck and keep working at it,,it will pay off..

DAMMMMMM  this is terrible..
for the girl and you guys and Pogo..

Unfortunately BP of any breed can do lots of damage in a bite and usually have to pay a dreadful price for it..whether  its thier fault or not..

In my rule book growls are not allowed by big or little paws in my house..at least not growls directed at humans..

It is just not allowed under any circumstances. .even if it is the child or human"s fault..

That may sound extreme..but so are the conquences in circumstances like this..

I hope that you can keep Pogo..but he needs to be taught the rules about children...
simply put..tollerate it or get up and move away from them..

Please know that I am aware that kids can and usually do cause the problem and should not be unsupervised with dogs of any size..I know that it doesn't apply in your situation since he was let loose by workers..

If Pogo stays with you, you can use your neices and nephews not only to teach them..but also Pogo..if neccessary get a professional to help you..

So so sorry to hear of this happening..and while it may be helpful to find out the exact circumstances. .at least in answering your questions..it won't prevent it in the future..

Keep us posted on what happens in all this..

Mixed Breed Pictures / Re: Hi everybody! need some help!

It;s kinda hard to tell with this picture..but I don't see any thing pointing towards wolf..his head and eyes look nothing like it..he could have Pyr..even without the back dew claws..but he sure looks like a great dog..

Weird about your vet..though..e ven he couldn't detect caracterists of a wolf..but the thought of it he didn't want to deal with???????????????????

I would get a different vet..and not mention the wolf part..and say he is a pyr mix..until he grows up some..

Would love to see more pics especially standing and side view..

I agree with MastiffOverloa d if it is not physical..then it is the mental obstacle you have to get over..

Have you tried using a leash and just heeling up the stairs..even if when you reach that spot use a really good treat and continue to heel up the stairs..I remember that show with cesar..but not sure what he did to resolve it..I'll have to look that one up..

Good luck hope he's feeling better and sleeping with his mom like he wants to soon..

Michelle..I comend you on your *calm and assertive energy*
that probably pi$$ed off that ol busy body more than if you responded otherwise....

So happy to hear great news instead of sad..sounds like you have a great VET..

Gunner has a great MOM and you showed him that in a place where lots of dogs get very stressed out..

We at our house are proud of you..and you can vent any time with us..

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: dog skittish around toddlers
« on: February 28, 2009, 01:50:10 pm »
Toddlers are quick and anitimated..an d set lots of dogs off..I agree that the more good stuff that comes from them under supervision  the better..

I had one dog that I couldn't let around kids because of some cruel behavior from a neighbor kid that I didn't find out about till too late..

If I had it to do over again I would have made kids the givers of all things wonderful..ins tead of a constant concern..

I would take it slow and use your nephew and any other kids you can russle up..and make it something he really really likes..

It;s good for the kids too to learn how and what to do around dogs of any size..let alone big paws..

Try getting some boxes..even if you have to dumpster dive for some behind a business..

Of course with your guys you would want big ones..

Our fur kids love to rip and tear and destroy boxes..
Yes when they are done it is a mess but we know that ahead of time..

It was always bait and switch..redire ct them to what they were allowed to chew and tear up..

the best part is that they tire themselves out playing tug o war and tearing things to peices..and once they are done..we just rake it all up and throw it away..

and they still love it today..even Sir William is getting into the act..being all ferious with head turning and growls..

But I have never had my furniture eaten..and I've had two pyrs..although not at the same time..

you can try it..

now the fense jumping that is a horse of a different color and since I never had that problem I'll leave that to those that have..

don't give up..they are worth it

Another good book is Bones would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clothier....we ll worth the read as well..

Remember to have fun...if it's not fun then something is wrong..

Yep, that's how they roll! ::) :P I have been embarrassed waaaay too many times :o They say that pyrs make people humble...I am on my way...far away ::)

They all do that not just Pyr parents..
I don't know if this will help..they are all so different but I remember when Magic and I were getting ready for our Therapy Dog testing..

Now this is after 3 obedience classes..and a CGC..

One day he simply forgot everything..du mb as a post..

I called my friends in training..and in therapy work and asked  *What am I doing wrong*..not one of them thought it was me at all..but I knew better..

It had to me..so I hit the books about Bouv's after all he was my 1st Bouv...and after about the third read thru..I found what I thought was the answer..

Now like I said this may not apply..but under all the breeds is a dog..

Magic had surpassed my expectations with his training..and I felt very confident he could pass anything..

I was taking him for granted..and he needed from me his leader to KNOW
1.He was doing it right..
2.That I noticed he was doing it right..

Sometimes leaders forget that followers need to be appreciated for lack of a better word..

He was beyond treats..he knew what I was asking of him..he needed my attention to his details..

So I went out to the nearby park and with great humility and a deep breath of pride in both of us ..started like in kindergarden..

The only difference was no treats..just my great delight and happiness in everything he did..

That was all it took..it was me..not him..and I never took him for granted again..

You and Ursa need to forget about any testing and just be together and relax...

Let go of all the frustrations.. and doubts..

Ursa is trying to teach you something..and sometimes we just need to listen ..heart to heart..

Trust yourself and her..

Good luck..

What a cuti pie...names all I can say is it will come to you..Good boy just got his name this evening..and he's been here almost two weeks..

But I can say there are a great many word jumble experts here and while I didn't use any of the names they came up with they came up with a bunch..

Good luck with your new girl..welcome to the adventure of puppyhood..and showing if that is the direction you are going..
