Sandy,
You are in my prayers.  That is so very difficult to go through, but know that you are not alone.
As Tajsa said take care of yourself right now.

Newfoundland Discussions / Re: How do I solve a barking problem?
« on: October 04, 2006, 02:23:11 pm »
I agree with the treat thing.  I would even recommend letting others treat her only if she stops barking.

We use "Sshhh" with Sam and if he is quiet he gets a treat.  It works well most of the time.  Not when he gets in a big uproar ie when another dog is using our mailbox as a potty post.

I would also like to add that Rosie doesn't always need nor probably want to be pet.  If you sense that she is getting agitated you could say something like, "Right now isn't a good time to meet Rosie."  I know I often would like to please everyone, but if my dogs are overwhelmed or behaving poorly they don't get attention from others.

Hope you find some of this helpful.

My friend's Newf does the same thing unless my daughter is in the pool.  He must rescue her when she goes under water.  Must be why his name is "Trouble."  Tehehehe

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Re: dog friends?

Leah's advice was spot on.  When we first got Cosmo he was nipped many times by smaller dogs.  He had really inappropriate greeting skills.  Dogs that are too happy to meet someone often get a growl or worse.  You will need to help him to become a better greeter.  Watch his approach.  Most dogs curve when walking up to each other.  They don't come head on as this is aggressive.  They spend a minute or two sniffing none personal parts and then move in for the privates and then to play.

Now as for another dog, OF COURSE!!!  Don't get another dog as a playmate though.  My dogs rarely play together and Sam gets mad because Cosmo gets too assertive (Sam's head in his mouth).  Dogs learn more appropriate greeting and pack order from other dogs, but still need to be taught when living with humans ie. kids are higher up than dogs.

My $0.02 for you!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: Rolled Third Eye?? Anyone???
« on: October 03, 2006, 01:45:46 pm »
The vet put Cosmo under for cherry eye surgery and realized that it wasn't the issue.  He got his teeth cleaned and toenails cut while in a drug induced sleep.  My poor boy is still sooooo crashed.

Rebekah!!

It is the same thing.  Originally she said it was cherry eye, then an anatomic defect and now rolled third eye.  My vet isn't crazy.  She just couldn't get a good look while he was awake because he is a bit manic in the office.  She called me right after they anesthesized him to say she wasn't going to remove the glands and then went to do some more investigating.

Cosmo's eyes are actually much more pronounced than Connor's eye and it is in both!!  Thanks for taking the time to post pictures of Connor.  Even though it is scary it is always better if someone has taken the path.  I am taking him to an opthamologist so I can get a better idea of the surgery, his need and the cost.  I will let you know what I find out.

I am going to look through my pics of him and see if I have a good one to show you.  He is sleeping soundly and his eyes look horrible right now.  I might sneak in and take a picture.

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Rolled Third Eye?? Anyone???
« on: October 03, 2006, 12:28:36 pm »
And the plot thickens...... ...

Seems as though Cosmo's third eyelids are rolled and that is they cause of the "Cherry Eye" appearance.  The vet recommended an opthamologist for him.  She said the third lid cannot be functioning correctly the way it is.  Not to mention it is the cause of the constant eye muck all of the time.  (Sam will be so disappointed if he can't clean Cosmo's eyes everyday over and over!)

Good news though, Cosmo is now home and safe.  He is very disoriented and unsure of what to do.  Poor Big Boy.

Tina, the vet loved the idea to claim Pink Eye when asked!!
